Don't mind one way or the other, unless it's an Elder Scrolls game, where the stats for males and females are different...then it's a matter of choosing which one is a better fit for my playstyle...or if I'm playing my own custom race where the stats are the same for both then it's back to not minding one way or the other.

I too especially admire the view...;)
Plus when you get done with that part, there's always an actual character underneath..unless whoever built the title was too dumb to realize such a thing was necessary.

That said...I think I could actually prefer games with Female PCs/protagonists..

Which makes me wonder why if Bungie insists on making everyone continue to play Halo games revolving almost entirely around Spartans and the UNSC(Covenant/forerunner game now, please), that they don't at least give us a more well known/interesting Spartan to kick ass with...say...Linda. Who I'd personally pick over John-117 about any day of the week.

Sorry..kind of hijacked the topic for a sec..As you were.
Oh, and on the topic of Halo, how the hell do the Covenant have little merderous offspring?
THEY'RE ALL MEN! OR WHATEVER THEY ARE THAT ACT LIKE MEN!
Or is there something we should know about?
And playing as another Spartan apart from John would have been pretty damn fun.
Or even Johnson, remember, he's a Spartan-I.
Well..on the latter point, again agreed.
On the former...actually, there supposedly are female Elites, if you've played Halo3 you should be aware of that. It's just unknown whether or not Bungie would intend them to show any sexual dimorphisms such as those evident in humans and most other mammalian species...Nevertheless, inquisitive minds have somewhat prevailed in that regard.. Not that you'd be interested, but there are several over at Deviantart with some concepts of their own..try a search there of 'female Sangheili' and see if you approve what turns up...or there's this one here..http://indigowolf514.deviantart.com/art/Mother-and-Daughter-110150159
Anyway, the perspective on their appearance varies some. I just kind of liked that one generally.
WELL, considering I played through the original trilogy twice (so sue me), and actually took the time between playable parts (muted the cutscenes and used subtitles) to work it out, it seems like that the Covenant are a predominantly male society with a sort or quasi-'make-me-a-sammich' style of ruling crossed with a sort of psychic-dictatorship multiplied by 3 form of government, and that also there seems to be some sort of confusion about their interpretation of humanity. Are they Forerunners, and therefore the Covenant gods from on high, or hideous heretical beings worthy of only complete eradication/annihilation?
I pose these questions to see if I can bait the fanboys out of their parents' basements for some sort of human contact before shoving them down again to go 'live' their 'lives'.

I thought the Female Lead in FFXIII was gonna bother me.

Turned out I like Lightening, she's a great character.

I only mind if my friends/parents see me playing as one. The last thing I need is to be sent to a shrink because of a misunderstanding.
Been there, man. And I know thy pain.

Word of advice? Stay away from FFX-2. My dad still looks at me funny sometimes.
And god help you if they find out you're playing a female in WoW, then forget the shrink and say hello to the nice men in white.

In general, if the game allows me to create an avatar resembling myself it will be male (since I am male and I'm pretty good at being my gender). If a game requires I play as a female it does not bother me as the Avatar no longer represents me but a pre-concieved character. If the game is online I simply cannot play as a female simply because I don't want my game experience to be altered. All to often female characters are treated differently and god forbid it is discovered the player of said character is male.

I'm male, but I actually prefer to play games as a female, and do so if I ever have the opportunity. I don't know why, its not really a sexual thing, I just like girls more than guys. The thought of a girl operating a gun and kicking ass is just cool.
A bit off topic but I never got why a lot of guys get off on the whole 'girls who kick ass' thing, to quote Yahtzee & I'm in agreement here it seems to me creepy-old manish.

Maybe I'm too chauvinist & old fashion for the hip modern day gamer, but I actually find this trend in Hollywood & video games nowadays of the hot sexy capable independent sometimes psychotic ***** characters, way too overused not that interesting or relevant and quite frankly rather annoying... sorry If that pisses anyone off but it's just my opinion.

On topic though, i went with the 'meh' option, if the game's good enough it really shouldn't matter. I rather enjoy the Metroid games and was looking forward to Starcraft Ghost back in the day.

Doesn't matter, though if given a choice I head for the male character because I am creating an avatar to represent myself

All things being equal, I prefer it. I'd pick Gordon Freeman over Bayonetta any day, but in Saints Row 2 I'll pick a badass psycho ganger that happens to be a female over a badass psycho ganger that happens to be a male.

That's in normal games, though. The first and last time I played a female character in an MMORPG (a MUD, actually), I got put off by some weirdo acting like a weirdo.

I see your point, and it is a good one. But when I play a game, I play for escapism. Which means I usually am playing as someone significantly more attractive and athletic than me, in short they serve to let me play as the attractive blond who has a thing for shooting guys in the head with a Desert Eagle. But I don't want to play as her all the time, it would get boring. I can totally see wanting to play as someone who is realistic at times. Heavy Rain is a pretty accurate representation of real life people, not one of the main characters is very attractive, and most of them can't do impossible things. Yet I love Heavy Rain and have been playing it nearly every day since its release. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the character I want to play as changes on a day to day basis.

I could be playing a robot for all I care, I just want to play a game.

That, and since the majority of the games I play now are FPS games, it really doesn't come up. (I do almost always play Zoey in Left 4 Dead, though... -shrug- Make of that what you will.)

My opinion is that female characters work until they start being poorly written.

Character is like looks for females. When it's good, it's very good, but if it has any flaws whatsoever it starts looking very bad. And quite frankly, the number of ass-kicking nut-kicking female characters is just annoying to me. Lara Croft, Samus Aran? They are mass-murderers who are supposed to look dainty and curious about the world they're exploring but really act hostile to pretty much everything and everyone. (Lara moreso in cutscenes) I don't know if they realize, but I don't like that sort of person in real life, so I'm not likely to in a game.

For me it even transfers to MMOs. I make a female character thinking "well at least it's something hot to look at if I'm bored while playing" but even having sunk my morals, I now actually decide on playing as a male. It just feels a little more believable. Not to say my general perception of females is that they can't beat up people, it's that they wouldn't go around kicking ass under tiny excuses like needing information. When I'm a female warrior cutting down a horde of vicious imps with an axe, my character feels a lot less feminine.

I play any gender, any race, any whatever. I think I get an idea for a character in my head then do that. I never feel strange about any particular combination. I probably play 50/50 on gendered characters.
