Well being a female i do like trying to play as a female but i noticed something. I am a fan of the Harvest moon games which all the newer ones let you pick boy or girl and for whatever reason whenever i pick girl i lose intesrt in the game alot quicker then i do when i play as a boy. But in other cases, Usually in fighting games, I always play as the Female. Regardless if she is good or not.
In my case, I figured out why I don't like playing Harvest Moon as a girl. For me, half the fun is wooing your potential wife. Keyword: wife. I have no desire to try to get a guy to like me.

Anyways, normally I don't mind playing as a girl one bit. Though I'm reluctant to do so in Bioware games because they treat every character like you should be trying to get in their pants. Again, I have no desire to woo a guy. Even in a video game.

Yet, maybe I should just get over it. After all, girl gamers have to put up with this sort of stuff all the time.

Depend, it's like my stance with homosexuality in video characters, I like any character regardless of gender, race or sexuality as long as they are a well rounded, charismatic and likable character in the first place.

So I don't like playing generic women whose only character trait is "boobs", but if they're interesting I'll like playing as them.

I prefer playing female characters for some reason... Even in text based RPG's where I can't see their butt.

Under normal circumstances I prefer playing as my gender it's only when the outfits are particularly slutty and/or distasteful that I... huh, actually that's the normal circumstances in waaaaaay too many games. Come to think about it, I think I've complained to my best friend at least once per game about the complete lack of plausible/respectful/tolerable/... (perpetual list of complaints) that the female character(s) have. Maybe I should consider playing more male characters from now on.

Female toons are generally better modeled than the square that is the generic action hero.
Often in many games gear seems to fit them better (Like wow for example and to a lesser extent this applies to nearly all games since women curve more so what is a black square as a male might actually have some colour as a female toon due to say stripes on the side of a uniform curving round the back slightly)
And from a gameplay aspect, female toons are not as wide so take up less of your screen giving you a better angle on the action.

Hi!
I started playing "Mass Effect" as a female character. I also used a female character while playing "The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion", but when I played "TES: Morrowind", I played as male. I also played "Saints Row 2" for awhile and there I played as a female character. I actually tend to choose playing as a chick, it would seem. Maybe it is that a female body is more pleasing to the eye? If I play a game where you can choose male or female, I usually play female. When I have no choice, and have to play male I make him look like me.

Only sometimes.

Such as Mass Effect I can play FemShep just fine, and I'm fine as characters like Samus Aran.

Hoever other games, such as Fallout 3, I simply can not play as a female.
Yeah it depends on the game, for some reason.

The Resident Evil remake for GCN -- always played Jill.
WoW I had a lot of female characters...

But I have a hard time playing FemShep in Mass Effect. I guess after so many male play-throughs, the female Shepherd character seems so strange to me. Plus I dislike her voice.

I am actually much more likely to buy a game (such as Mass Effect or Dragon Age) if you can play as a girl. (Since I'm a girl.) It just makes it much more fun.

Gaaah! I swear MaleShep is a robot. Ugh x 100.

Though in ME2, the FemShep's voice is...raspier. It sounds like she's hitting on *everyone.*

If I can create my own character and I'm going to be inhabiting it for the duration of the game (Oblivion, et al), I play as a male character, because I want to play as someone I can identify with. If I create my own character and I'll be playing as it in short bursts (Soulcaliber 4, et al), I play as whatever character I feel like watching at the time. (Little girl with Astaroth's moveset = awesome)

EDIT: If the main character's defined by the game, I don't care what gender it is. I'll play the game either way.

I really don't care depending on their character. If they're bitchy and whine about everything then I wouldn't like it. I had no problems playing Madison in Heavy Rain and I always played as Chloe on the Heroes team in Uncharted multiplayer.

I have no problem with it, though I mostly won't choose female as a gender, given the choice in games like Fallout etc. but I have nothing aganst it.
In fact, I'm actually RPing a girl over in forum games and RP.

I play as a female (as that is what I am) but I don't often enjoy it.
Nearly every female avatar I have played to date shows every single curve they have.

Is it so hard to have a neutral-gender/modest looking female avatar?
I just want to play the game, as a female, without being called 'babe' all of the time.
Well, virtually all female video game characters are male-defined -- which means that even if Beyond Good & Evil's Jade is acclaimed as "deep" by the game's (male) fans, the problem of oversexualization won't likely be solved until more female game designers enter the fore.
It works the other way too. Every single male video game character is some muscle-bound adonis who would make Goliath feel inadequate and a chin that could be used as a battering ram.

That face is more chiselled than Lady Libertys.

So... Many... Threads... About girls and gaming.
To be fair, this thread was started back when there weren't that many threads like it going around. It just got bumped.

EDIT: Also, it's not about real life girls and gaming, but about playing gender opposite characters in games.

I swing either way. Either I end up with a Male avatar or a female.
If I have a choice I often endorse the "oddball" option. Dwarf female and Tauren Female come to mind.

I will not be found dead playing some soppy female elf.

I don't mind as long as I don't have to woo a male character just because it feels to weird.

Then my mum walks into the room.

Then it's just awkward.

Doesn't bother me at all I just go with whatever I feel like.

For instance on Guild Wars:

I too especially admire the view...;)
Plus when you get done with that part, there's always an actual character underneath..unless whoever built the title was too dumb to realize such a thing was necessary.

That said...I think I could actually prefer games with Female PCs/protagonists..

Which makes me wonder why if Bungie insists on making everyone continue to play Halo games revolving almost entirely around Spartans and the UNSC(Covenant/forerunner game now, please), that they don't at least give us a more well known/interesting Spartan to kick ass with...say...Linda. Who I'd personally pick over John-117 about any day of the week.

Sorry..kind of hijacked the topic for a sec..As you were.
Oh, and on the topic of Halo, how the hell do the Covenant have little merderous offspring?
THEY'RE ALL MEN! OR WHATEVER THEY ARE THAT ACT LIKE MEN!
Or is there something we should know about?
And playing as another Spartan apart from John would have been pretty damn fun.
Or even Johnson, remember, he's a Spartan-I.
Well..on the latter point, again agreed.
On the former...actually, there supposedly are female Elites, if you've played Halo3 you should be aware of that. It's just unknown whether or not Bungie would intend them to show any sexual dimorphisms such as those evident in humans and most other mammalian species...Nevertheless, inquisitive minds have somewhat prevailed in that regard.. Not that you'd be interested, but there are several over at Deviantart with some concepts of their own..try a search there of 'female Sangheili' and see if you approve what turns up...or there's this one here..http://indigowolf514.deviantart.com/art/Mother-and-Daughter-110150159
Anyway, the perspective on their appearance varies some. I just kind of liked that one generally.
WELL, considering I played through the original trilogy twice (so sue me), and actually took the time between playable parts (muted the cutscenes and used subtitles) to work it out, it seems like that the Covenant are a predominantly male society with a sort or quasi-'make-me-a-sammich' style of ruling crossed with a sort of psychic-dictatorship multiplied by 3 form of government, and that also there seems to be some sort of confusion about their interpretation of humanity. Are they Forerunners, and therefore the Covenant gods from on high, or hideous heretical beings worthy of only complete eradication/annihilation?
I pose these questions to see if I can bait the fanboys out of their parents' basements for some sort of human contact before shoving them down again to go 'live' their 'lives'.
My my..doesn't someone have quite the elevated opinion of themselves?..Well done, you.

I suppose I could go into a whole process of explanation, but based on that last bit I seriously doubt either you or I would care enough to make it worth the time/effort, so I think I'll skip it for once.
