I only say yes because it bugs me to no end that they don't have female character look cool, rather they have them perform as much fan service as possible, and if I wanted something akin to porn, I would go watch actual porn.

Man, could this poll be any more biased [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_polling]? Choose option #1 if you're a heterosexual man. Choose option #2 if you're a man who is insecure about his gender. Choose #3 if you just want to be snarky. Choose #4 if you're a girl. And so on.

I went with Option #2, not because I was uncomfortable about my gender, but just because I do have a preference to playing a character whose gender agrees with my own. It's not because I enjoy staring at guy butt, it's because I like to roleplay my character and just feel more comfortable doing so if I don't have to pretend I've swapped a chromosome.

So, Mr. OP, you think it's so wrong I might not like playing female characters that you have to word your poll like there's something wrong with me? Well, I find it a bit demented that people play games to stare at their avatars. Learn to keep both hands out of your pants when you play, you philistine.

It doesn't bother me at all. Although, if I can choose the gender of the protagonist (RPGs and such), I always choose a male character.

Gaming for me is mostly about immersion, and being of the male persuasion myself, I can more fully and easily immerse myself into a game if my character is a dude.

I usually go for female characters if the choice is available, unless it's somthing like fallout and I just want to make my character look as much like me as possible. And sadly I don't have boobs, but I strive for accuracy damnit!

In a game where you don't have a choice then I couldn't care less. However, in Mass Effect and sometimes Fallout 3, I will create a woman character either just to mix things up or the male characters are just so damn ugly that I can't bare to play as one.

An already written character, I don't mind.
A character built for an RPG story, by me, will be me. (My canon story)
Anything strength based, male char, anything dexterity based can be either. I gravitate more toward female casters than males. Women, in general, seem to be more patient than I, and it takes a lot of work to become a caster.

The only times I do have trouble with female chars are when they are, or seem to be, a strength based thing. I can suspend feelings and mental stuff, but a grounding in reality is preferred. Twig women (which most female avatars are) toting around mahoosive weapons is mad. The men would never be able to do it either, but they are made to like like hulk so it seems at least plausible.

Well being a female i do like trying to play as a female but i noticed something. I am a fan of the Harvest moon games which all the newer ones let you pick boy or girl and for whatever reason whenever i pick girl i lose intesrt in the game alot quicker then i do when i play as a boy. But in other cases, Usually in fighting games, I always play as the Female. Regardless if she is good or not.

Why the hell would it matter? As long as the game is actually fun, I don't care about the gender of the main character.

If you've no difficulty playing a hardened veteran, or a zombie, why worry about the other gender?

I mean, you've no problem playing a female Boomer have you?

But what's my motivation?

i'll choose to play as female if there's that option...it just seems more interesting sometimes, like in Mass Effect or Dragon Age. you seem to always play as a guy in most games, i dunno...

*In a snobbish high-class voice* Hmm... well I definately don't play female characters for any sort of sexual reasons what so ever and...
Pfff - who am I (and more importantly some of YOU) trying to fool. One of the reasons I'll play a female character is cus they look hot. I'll admit it and I'm not that ashamed of it. I mean, I'm an average teenage male so it is a definate factor.
With that point taken care of I do have to say that it is not the only reason. I don't always play female characters. In fact for the most part I play male characters especially for my main in any sort of RPG. Probably because I can make a male character that I can relate to. Plus playing a female character can be awkward sometimes such as when male characters start hiting on you. Occasionally I'll play a female character because it fits my play style because in some games the female characters are the fast, quick, and/or sneaky ones. Case-in-point: Lilith from Borderlands as you can spec her to be a roguish character. I tend to like these types of characters being the sneaky bastard I am. And I don't mind at all if the main character of a game is female.
So I guess in the end playing as a female character doesn't bother me that much. I prefer to play as male characters just because of relatability, but occasionally I'll play as a female character for the reasons mentioned above.

Uhm.... no? If I came off like that, my bad, but I didn't mean to.

As a rule no, Bayonetta was fun, Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be sweet, and I don't mind seeing how female character plays out in Dragon Age. The only time I think I wouldn't have a female avatar is in a social game (such as MMO).

The different grunting noises created by female characters in games like Oblivion and ME/2 break my emmersion. I avoid playing as a girl because of this. I also find it weird when in some games sexual tension is added and the object of affection is a guy.
