Depends on a lot of things, usually I go for a female character for several reasons.

1: I like the look better
2: There are too few games/movies with good female protagonists, if I can make one I will
3: The voice on the female might be better (Like in ME2 imo)
4: When I play I play to be something I am not. I'm not a girl, so if I can play that why not?

It does not bother me if I have to be a girl in a game at all. Often I will chose that option anyway.

It doesn't really bother me much to be honest. As long as that character is likeable, I don't care if they have boobs or not.

I delibrately try to play as the girl despite being male. If I have to stare at an arse for the length of a game it might as well be female.

I'm a guy and I always prefer playing as girls because I think they make better protagonists than guys, the same for films and books. Male characters can't convey certain emotions without seeming effeminate, while female characters convey emotions much better and can make the player/viewer/reader more involved with the story and characters. Female characters are also easier to relate to. That's what I think anyway.

Most of my characters are in fact female. The main reason is because generally female characters get more customization options in MMOs.

I only feel a little bit weird if I'm playing an RPG that let's you customise your character as male or female. If I don't have a choice in the matter, I really couldn't care less.

Nope. I don't care if the playable character is male or female. xD

Though I find myself getting more attached to the guys (I'm a girl) and getting upset, angry, etc. easier when something bad happens to them versus a female character.

I don't mind, but given the choice I play as a girl over a guy. Why? Because in such games where girl or guy is selectable, the speach is A sexual and therefore the girl is simply seen as well respected wheras the guy is just in the system.

To quote my friend Bill, when asking why he was playing a female character in WoW, "If I have to stare at someone's butt for several hours, I'd prefer a girls." 'nuff said. That and the whole concept of playing a game is about taking on the role of another character. I could use a little perspective once in a while.

If it's a character that I'm supposed to relate to (like an MMO avatar), then I would stick with male. If it's a game like Super Smash Bros, then it doesn't matter what gender I play since I'm picking based on combat style and ability (same with an FPS where your character is not always visible).

Essentially gender only matters to me if the difference is entirely cosmetic. I would rather use the powerful female option than the weaker male option, and I have no Freudian issue with doing so.

If the character is in fact a character then no, it doesn't bother me.
But nameless mutes? At least let us customise the appearance so we can pretend they're us.

There is nothing wrong with playing as the opposite sex. Just behave yourself though and keep those thoughts from becoming spoken words.

Wheres the "I play as a character that is a virtual representation of myself so that I can relate and get into the game easier... Escapism after all." option? Because thats what I do... thats the reason I play as a male character... I dont care what character you play as, totally up to you.

Couldn't care less if my character is a guy or girl (though I guess I play more guy characters). What matters is if the game is decent and enjoyable.

A game is generally about a new idea that you get to play with, not the gender of your character.

you never find out the gender of your character in Forza 3, do you?

The only time it bothers me is if there is if there are romances and no lesbian option who is at least as likeable as the male only female options.

not really..

1. it is a game

2. i dont check video game characters out

3. repeat #2

4. unless it is a role where a woman wouldn't normally be involved.

5. having said that, playing a guy character where a woman would normally be involved is also lame.

6. repeat #2
