Pathetically and unfortunately, yes, I suspect it does.
Pathetically? You should be thankful for the people who brought us Mrs. Pacman.

EDIT: Another thing, can everyone here explain why it's not ok to sell sex in games but perfectly reasonable for violence to?
Because politicians and the mental midgets at the ESRB have the same mindset as many on this board: The "target demographic for video games is teenage boys", despite studies showing 65% of gamers are over 18. Since the games are "for chilren" (in the "won't someone think of the..!" sense) teh sex is baed.

As for why people think sex is bad for kids and violence isn't, in the general case? Just give it up and change countries. This one is too steeped in that sort of stupidity for anyone to even remember why.

Games were for adults when the first came out (unless you had a real cool dad who let his kids play with his $300 atari 2600!) then the attitude went "kiddie" and stayed there, despite the fact that a metric butt-ton of those kids from the 80s who played video games still do.

Sex sells, but it doesn't make a good game, and you get more money if you make a good game.

I've been trying to find an example for this. I want to say Onechanbara did pretty poorly because it was such a terrible game, but I can't find a single gosh darn statistic on it.

Well I bought Rumble Roses XX despite what I heard the reviews said and though I bought it just because it's oh so damn hot I found it to actually be an enjoyable wrestling game.

The only time I buy games is if they are good games, that is the only decision I make. If a game is bad it doesn't matter if it has sex or not, same with if a game is good.

This is big one so I could go on for awhile...and don't you dare turn that into an innuendo.

Does anyone remember the old tomb raider. I hated it, ok story but the controls were so frustrating that I did not even want to finish the first level.
I also remember the reason I bought it was because a sexy woman with double (or more) D's was looking at me seductively with a large gun in her hand.
I was a stupid kid and it was around that time that puberty hit me like a ton of bricks.

Today I'm more mature (sort of) and If I see a sexy girl in a good game I count it as a bonus.
However there are still Horny kids and adults out there who buy a game because of T&A.

You look at a game like "Bikini samurai squad" that came out awhile ago, do you think that if any of those women wore modest appropriate clothing that it would have sold at all? hell it wouldn't have even gotten past story boards (if they had any)

Bottom line: in my opinion sex sells in games just like it always has, and as long as you have bikini samurai, or hot superheros, or (God forbid) Megan Fox,

[yawn..]

Men will pay full price to see it.

But that's just what I think.

Why is Mass Effect always on the chopping block for this? If I remember correctly there was this little title called God Of War that started out with 4 breasts on screen that ended in a interactive QTE 3some. So do you think GOW would have sold less if it wasn't there?

In some cases I suppose it could, well it can help in most cases. And it doesn't need to be pure sex I mean, a half naked woman on the cover, Tomb Raider series, X-Blades, Heavenly Sword and the like, their cover art helps spark that little primal instinct in most of the Male population. They are at the very least drawn to take a second look at the box art and consider buying it though it hasn't worked as well as it has a couple years ago. Now obviously there are some games where there is a sex scene, most notably Mass Effect for showing it more, and games like Fable and Fallout 3 with ingame hookers though you don't see much there just kinda go with the satisfaction you got some though this still raises alarms with twisted pantied congress members. You couldn't get away with a game all about sex these days though who knows maybe in the near furture but maybe as a little subliminal box art or some minor ingame innuendo it can help to those horny enough to go for it.

The closest things to sex in any of my games are D-cup polygons & double longsword penetration.

I'm wondering if this is really culturally relevant any more. In discussing one of the many threads about female gamers, I came to wonder if sex actually did sell video games or make much of a difference. Looking at the more popular games in every genre, none of them really have a sexual selling point, and most of the games whose basis is sex like Liesure Suit Larry, X Blades, DOA, etc. have horrible sales.

So I am asking you this: Do you think sex really sells video games? Does it help sales? Can it hurt sales?

Historically speaking I would have been inclined to say yes, with Lara Croft being a huge example, but even the Tomb Raider series is not doing so well any more. I can't think of a concrete example of a hot-selling game where sex was it's main selling point.
Mass Erect... er I mean...

Sure it does, and there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with throwing in exceptionally attractive men or women with appealing physical features to augment interest in one's video game. I think MGS3 did this very well. MGS3 was an amazing game with fantastic gameplay and an incredibly captivating and emotional story.... oh, and Eva was FUCKING HOT (yeah I said it, what, SHE WAS!); did that cheapen the game in anyway whatsoever? Fuck no. For me, it made it more enjoyable. I was still very immersed in the game's fantastic storytelling, but at the same time, whenever Eva came on screen, it made me just THAT much happier!

What I'm saying is the use of eye candy in a video game can add to the experience itself - i'm not saying replace quality storytelling and gameplay with it, all i'm saying is the use of these visual tools can ENRICH the game without abandoning the quality of the game itself.
