Yes.

The only problem with games is that they don't have enough sex in them. Quite frankly, sex is an inextricable part of humanity, and every single other medium of fiction gets to explore and discuss this.

Games don't. And they don't because of people like you who get all giggly over it.
This completely pawns everything else everyone has said. If gamers were more mature and open about the matter then perhaps we would start seeing sex in games used more productively and wisely.

EDIT: Another thing, can everyone here explain why it's not ok to sell sex in games but perfectly reasonable for violence to?

I still haven't bought Mass Effect, and the only reason I had already planned on buying Assassin's Creed 2 BEFORE they tacked on their "Get IT Here" sign to it was because the ending of AC1 left me with a barrel of frustration I feel the need to empty in the throats of greasy Italian peasants and lepers.

I just took a quick look at sales figures for some of the games in question... Leisure Suit Larry, X-Blades and Bikini Samurai squad all have sales figures under or around 50,000 units. Is this enough for this kind of behaviour to continue?

Will we see a decline in this trend as the sales figures reflect a shift in attitudes towards it?

Sex should never make the game (Leisure Suit Larry), but a few animated boobies here and there don't hurt. Especially when you can control them (see: Ninja Gaiden).

I can't say the much debated sex scene in Mass Effect interested me in the slightest.

And how many games have sex anyway? Excluding those rape sims they have in Japan.

Sex sells everything to be honest, while I don't believe a game would be sold on sex appeal alone it could help now and then when some teen catches his eye glancing across X Tomb Raider game's case.

If you put a "sexy chick" on the cover of a game that you're trying to sell to 12-15 year olds. then yes it helps.

other than that, no. because when i see a cover like that i think, "wow that game has got to suck if they're resorting to that."

Some people will be tempted to buy a game because of sexual content; others will decide against it because of sexual content. I suspect that on the whole, the "Will buy game for sex" and the "Will abhor game for sex" lobbies will balance out.

Personally, I think it depends on the game. Sex has its place in life as a whole, and has had its place in books and cinema for centuries, so it would be remarkably fatuous to say that it should never appear in games.

It was included in Mass Effect in a low-key, appropriate way that furthered the roleplaying, and so suited the tone of the game. For some games, sexual content is entirely inappropriate (Lego Goes Wild, for instance, would perhaps not be a good idea), while in other games even fairly explicit content could be included if handled in an appropriate way - RPGs and adventure games aimed at an adult market are the obvious options.

What annoys me, though, is the idea that violence is acceptable while sex isn't. I once heard someone criticise an episode of CSI because "during the autopsy, a nipple was gratuitously shown for several seconds." It's called 'anatomy', mate, get used to it.

if I want to see some sex and have no immediate opportunity to have some myself, then I'll probably stick on youporn.com - not buy a "sexy" video game.

Well, I think any thing that lets guys pretend they know anything about real military and guns is more appealing at the moment, but it doesnt hurt sales much if theres a boob or two.

It does, but like all marketing schemes it has to be managed properly. It's a little more than "Slap some cleavage or a nice juicy ass-shot onto the box and go".

Sex can help sell games, but there has to be something there worth selling in the first place. Most gamers know what they want out of thier videogames. Very, very few gamers will go out and buy some random game from developers they've never head of just because the front box-art was a giant nipple.

I mean... I might, if it was like $15...

Duh.

Show a pubescent boy a pair of breasts on the cover and he'll buy the game immediately.

It worked with Mass Effect, it will work with games like Alpha Protocol.

There were no breasts on the cover of Mass Effect. I don't see a lot of kids being allowed to buy these games in the forst place.

I think it depends on the genre. If we're talking MMO's then it's a bit of a good idea to show a few scantily clad women since the choice of gender is going to exist in said commercialized MMO. But sex doesn't sell military/war FPS games very well, due to the lack of women in war, typically.

Outside of leisure suit larry and all those freaky japanese games (I'm looking at YOU bayonetta) I don't think it factors into it at all. Like the sex scene in mass effect didnt likely affect the sales one bit.
