A lot of threads end up devolving into bitter arguments about this, so I figured I could at least start a thread where the discussion is the topic at hand.

Does the USA abuse it's power and influence? Explain, please.

Only proper way to start off such a question/debate:

"Oh shit..."

Eh, it does what any country would do if it had the power and influence America has. America seeks to protect its own interests, and often, given how far-reaching those interests are, this leads to conflict with other nations.

Yes, America oversteps its bounds at times (Iraq comes to mind), but I think it's primarily due to a zealous sense of self-preservation, rather than an intentionally arrogant or aggressive demeanor.

Fix't.

It is only natural for a nation to use it's influence to manipulate weaker nations. It is not right but it just is. Just look what Europe did to Africa and what the US did to the Central and South American nations. No politician gets re-elected by helping foreign nations become self sustaining but they do get campaign funds for making multi-national corporations insanely wealthy and votes by protecting and making jobs for their electorate.

No. Power and influence are meant to be abused, so not abusing them counts as abuse (miuse), but that would mean that whenever power is abused, it is not abused and when it is not abused, it is in fact abused and hfasncfakwjengcfkqfbvi.... LOGIC BOMB

No, America does not abuse its power. It's acting in exactly the manner a bunch of boorish, selfish, corrupt nincompoops should act.

I agree with this, the UK did overstep when they were a "world leader", so did the USSR, so did France (long, long ago haha) so did Germany, so did every country that was a major player at any given time in history.I don't think it's aggresive, but i wouldn't be so sure about arrogant, but then again, when you're a big dog, you want the planet to see you as such i guess...

Oh how i love (mostly) mellow Canada :p

I quite disagree, as a matter of fact. As an American, I do not see myself as inherently superior to any other person of any other nationality, nor do I see my country as inherently superior. It simply happens to be the most powerful at the present time in history.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....

If it isn't, it should be...
If it is, there would be very little cause for concern, we're at the point where the democracy can't agree on anything anymore, so who needs to be worried...when one idiot has all the power at his fingertips, then the world should worry again...err...

...to quote my friend at the top of this thread.....OH SHIT!!!!!

I have to disagree with your disagreement of my fixing of the previous poster's post. Matter of fact, as an American, I can say that this country sees itself as divinely endowed with a transcendence over any other country or people in the world today. And as outlandish as my claim was, my observation would be as valid as yours. It's a matter of which collective has the louder voice, and that voice tends to be the kind that gathers around city plazas bearing signs announcing that our own president is a godless, dirty Muslim. And that Muslims are godless and dirty. But I love you guys, go base-8 numeric systems and all that.

Yeah, I suppose you've got a point there. There is a very large, very loud segment of the population which proclaims that America is inherently superior.

Rather embarrassing, really.

I'm more worried about those of us pronouncing our new president's divinity. Presidents should not be worshiped like rock stars. Besides, someone needs to pummel into their heads that just because he won the election doesn't mean nothing is going to go wrong ever again.

Not that there's anything remotely acceptable about scaremongering bigots, in case that seemed like I was saying the 'dirty Muslim' thing wasn't a big deal.

No more or less than the British Empire did, or the Roman empire, or Athens, or anyone else that becomes the big boy in the play-ground- I have to admit, I do have a dislike of America - not americans (no one owns a brush big enough to tar that many people at once), but the sense of rabid flag waving fundamentalist arrogant xenophobia that their antics abroad often give me. Still, now they've decided to elect a member of our species rather than that poo flinging spider monkey they voted for last time, I find my Ameriphobia abating (is that a word? Balls to it, it is now...).

...cue loopy christian republican rant with the word 'sir' at the end of every sentence in an effort to look reasonable, and of course, the obligatory 'god bless' at the end...
...Darwin bless 'em.

I disagree with all disagreements above, and preemptivly disagree with disagreers what disagree with me in future disagreements.
I'd also like to complain about the amount of complaints on this thread.
