As a newly turned 18 year old gamer, my pet peeve is the exact opposite of yours.

You see, the whole restriction system wasn't put there soley to piss you off, heck, over here in good old brittania we have about 3 interchangeable ratings services, which gets weird.

Anyway, the point i'm going to get to is that the ratings protect 3 people: 1. The developers/publishers of the game: they can't be fairly held accountable if someone far too young to play their game does something stupid after playing it. 2. The shop selling the game, they check for id, they don't get a huge fine (both for the shop and the person selling the game) 3. most importantly, YOU / the gamer public: I hope for reasonably obvious reasons.

Without the ratings system, we probably would have lost gaming to the likes of Mr. thompson years ago.

you only need to be 17 to buy a "M" rated game,(in America)
there is no law stating that, it is just store policy

the laws saying you can't sell m rated games to under 18's get thrown out pretty fast after being passed

Sub Question:
Why is sex considered worse than violence.
look at your history, they're all puritans and prudes, that's why they came to america to get away from the more liberal europeans

I believe that nothing should be restricted by rating, because ratings are BS. Rating systems put more emphasis on sex then violence, which is incredibly stupid. What is more dangerous, decapitation or sex. I think Decapitation wins all the way.
Unfortunately the the powers that be don't agree with you. I don't think it should be illegal to hit someone in the face with a rake if they're exhibiting obvious signs of utter stupidity but alas, the laws in most states see otherwise... and unfortunately THAT restriction doesn't wear off when you turn 18.

I really don't know why sex is worse than violence. It's always kind of frustrated me. You can shoot guns and kill people, but the very second a nipple is shown, the game is damned to hell as a pornographic sex simulator.

The europeans were more conservitive at the time.
P.S. Conservitives do not care about rateings, liberals are pro rateings.

Finally! Someone who realizes Thompson only claims to be conservative.

I'm of the opinion that manhunt should get a T rating and the only game I feel deserving of an M rating is basically porn, not 10 seconds of nudity, porn. As in there are main characters spending half the game naked and you visually seeing them completely and the only thing deserving an AO rating is one that gives real addresses of real people and tells you exactly how to rape them so you can do it in the game. So maybe I'm a little biased, I think judges in courts should realize it's not best-buy's responsibility to be parents, best buy should realize that anyone with that many children should be expected to be neglectful, and parents should realize that best buy's responsibility to be parents. And all of these judges who think otherwise should be fired the same way a racist should.

The gaming industry already has a safe guard to not be censored, it is called the first amendment.

P.S. Jack Tompson could never have a valid point. EVER.
1. I agree, Jack Thompson should, never... ever!!! be right about anything ;)
2. The first ammendment may stop the Government from censoring anything so-long as it does not break the law. Just as you cannot shout obsenities,"fire", or "rape" in a public area; you cannot sell a harmful product without a warning. Although I personally dissagree, any form of media that portrays sex, violence, or any other adult theme is considered harmful/impressionable. Therefore, the Law has the right to modify/punish any media that does not offer some sort of viewer disgression. The ESRB is put in place to further protect the industry from overzealous activists and self-righteous parents (Just look at the controversey with the film "Tropic Thunder").
3. Spelling is overrated. I've always been bad at it because the meaning of my words are more important to me. Everyone else is just nit picking

Videogames will make me violent or crazy as much as eating a single bigmac will make me fat, it might help a little, yet i will already have to be pushed right to the edge for it to matter.

excuse me, but people who's mind is weak enough to be altered by a video game should be in a mental institution

although I've seen an 8 year old boy playing GTA:san Andreas and it is a rather disturbing sight
oh, and sex is considered more important than violence because we live in a society who's moral code originally came from a certain religion... yes... you know which one...
