you can't just PRESS a button, what about IT's feelings,
you have to talk to it,

caress it,

sooth it,

THEN mash it hard, fast and continuously and hope something cool happens

Is there anything else in the room, or is it empty?

If it's just and empty room, I'd push the button.
I'd get bored really quickly if I was ever trapped in an empty room.

Yeah, I'd prolly push it. I get extremely bored really quickly, and I'd probably succumb to curiosity within a couple minutes.

Lets see if we can get her before she says "button"!

Ok, you wake up in a dark room, and have no idea how you got there. In front of you is a big red button. The button says "Don't push this button."

Do you press it?
Nope. This scenario sounds like something you'd see in a Saw movie. The room would probably fill up with acid or boiling water.

Remember kiddies: if somebody kidnaps you and puts you in an isolated room, they aren't about to give you lollies.

Is there another way out of the room?

Otherwise, I'd wait for a day or two (read: a couple of hours, until I got hungry) before pressing it.

I would first try to figure out what was going on. If there were no clues, and no way out of the room that I could see, then I would push it, as it would be my only opportunity to make an impact on my situation.

If they didn't want something to happen then they shouldn't have made a button, so it is their fault that I pushed the button after doing the mandatory visual sweep for an exit light.

if anyone was locked in a featureless room forever eventually anyone would hit it. I would hit it immediately, without question.

No doubt in my mind, that button would be pushed. For one thing I'd be curious, and another thing is that I hate being told what to do.

Critical question: is there a door, window, trapdoor, or other orifice which may provide an escape from said dark room? Because that's really, really important.

Are you referring to that movie where the guy with half a mouth offers the people a million dollars to push the button? I haven't seen the movie, but if I were in said situation, I would 100% push that button. Judging from the trailer, I'd say that the twist at the end was probably that at least one person you don't know in the world is dying at any given point in time, and everybody learns the lesson not to be pretentious hippies blathering on about the value of life. Hang on, let me Wikipedia and check a plot summary to see if I'm right...

...Nope. Damn. I think my thing is better.

EDIT:

I cannot remember. It was a parody of a movie on youtube, all I can remember.
It's a film called "The Box" starring Cameron Diaz. I briefly summarized all that I know about the plot above, and it also has a really stupid ending which is much worse than the one I thought up.
