Wynne, I need to kill things with reckless abandon and I don't need pesky death to get in the way.
Zevran. The guy comes off as a bit of a sleaze, and I think that turned a lot of people out (that plus there are plenty of homophobic idiots who felt threatened by him). But he's much deeper than he lets on. If you take the time to get to know him, you find he's a pretty broken person, and much of his personality is just a mask to keep others from getting too close. Whether you keep him as a friend or engage in a romance, his is definitely one of the most engaging and emotional storylines.
Shale is the most useful gameplay-wise, but narrative/characterization-wise I'd go with Lelianna or Zevran. Zev is hilarious and Lelianna's Bard/chantry background is quite interesting.
Edit: Also, It's goddamn hilarious when you select for Lelianna to use the "Bard's Song" ability and instead of a song she goes AAAAAHHHHHHH.

Best in terms of gameplay: Shale. She is a terrific tank - far better than Alistair. I would have her going toe-to-toe with ultra bosses, and she would rarely need to be healed. And she can turn into a damage-dealer with the click of a button. I also liked Leliana a lot - give her the ranger specialization and she can provide the team with an extra tank all while wreaking havoc with her bow. Plus, she was the only character I had who could open locks. I know a lot of people love Wynne, but I played as a human mage spirit healer/arcane warrior, so Wynne was just a lesser version of myself.

Alistair, great writing and voice acting. He's got some brilliant lines. Once you have him in the party there always a humor injection!

I'm surprised Alister is ranked so high, considering how many people consider him emo... which I never got, how he is emo? Alistair is one of the few character in those kind of game that you can make fun of and be harsh too and he just bounces back with a joke.
Talking to him in game made me think of the stupid stuff me and my friend say/do IRL. Had quite the bromance going on with him.

Usually Shale and Morrigan, since Shale hates mages their conversations are quite funny, overall Shale is my favourite party member though
