How can your friend justify the claim that burning alive would be the least painful way to go?
Nerve damage mostly. It would still hurt like hell, but after a while, because the nerves would be destroyed, you'd stop feeling it.

As for me, I'd like firing squad, but given the choice between drowning and burning, toss me in the water.

I almost drowned as a kid and while I don't remember much of my childhood, that memory is something I'll never forget. The feeling of panic and helplessness as your lungs burn with the intake of water... no thank you.

In my opinion, the lesser of two evils is being burned to death.

I would much rather drown than burn (although I prefer neither :p ), as drowning seems like it would be a LOT less painful than burning alive.

Definitely drowning. I nearly went this way a few years ago and the point just before you fall unconscious is actually really peaceful. I can't imagine being set on fire would have the same sort of bliss.

If the fire is hot enough it will sear out your nerves in seconds and you wont feel anything. Moments later you would be cremated. Efficient and quick, would go with that.

I was going to say that drowning is theoretically better. Most people associate drowning with the dread of being underwater not being able to breathe, but I remember reading somewhere (you know there's always someone willing to study these creepy things) that it's actually one of the best ways to commit suicide. You go underwater and BEFORE you start with the dread of suffocating you breathe in water. Apparently collapse is almost instant and you lose consciousness very quickly. So it's actually a fairly painless and fast way to die. Then I read

Having not died yet, I'd rather burn. I always hated water and burning skin smells nice.
and I must admit I have my doubts now. I mean, I think it would be cool to go saying "Hm-mmm, that sure smells yummy".
OK, cool and creepy :-D

That's a tough one I've actually had a few near drowning experiences all caused by freak currents. Lets just say, me and the ocean aren't the best of friends. However my experiences can tell you this, drowning is with out a doubt one of the most terrifying things a human body could go through. However I've always had a fear of being burnt alive but I think I would rather go with that, than drowning.

For the record after my most recent drowning experience which happened nearly two years ago, I haven't been in the ocean since.

Also I heard that way back when people where still using burning as a form of excution, in some cases they would use oil or some other flameable liquid to speed up the process thus allowing for a quicker death.

There is one more form of death that I would reject in an instant in favour of burning and drowning if I had to choose. The death is, being burried alive.

Well burning to death would take a long time unless you fell into the Terminator pit. Drowning would be much quicker and much less painful.

It depends on how fast I'm burning. If I'm jumping into an incinerator it probably would be faster and less painful than drowning(which is a long painful way to go). Short of that, both prolly suck.

Having the amount of nerves firing up in the moments before death as a means of measuring the amount of pain experienced, I would have to say that drowning will hurt a lot less than burning.

As far as my knowledge goes, when one drowns, one passes out and dies from lack of oxygen after water fills their lungs. On the other hand, one can die from burning in different ways; one can suffocate from the lack of oxygen, be poisoned by carbon monoxide made by the flames (which will be a lot less painful than drowning, so your friend might have a point there), shock, blood loss, or just burning away the body parts.

So yes, I'd rather drown than burn.

I'd rather not have my nerve endings seared by intense heat, that would fucking hurt, I think I'd rather be drowned.

I choose burning, because A: it's MORE painful, B: it's got more pretty flames to it, C: I like fire, and D: because then I could say that I'm just too damned hot to be alive. ;D

Drowning by far. I got a small burn scar on my left leg so I have a taste of fire. I realize that having your whole body being lit up would be more painful then I could hope to ever comprehend. Every second would feel like hours. HOURS!

Drowning. Drowning seems a lot more instant than burning alive.

Skin isn't too flammable, but fat burns very easily.
And that works if you aren't a twig or extremely muscular.

Having been burned badly and nearly drowned. Neither are comfortable. But with drowning youre most likely going to die faster than burning. Burning to death would be excruciatingly painful and it would be a long suffering death.
