This was inspired by a chat with my parents this morning, believe it or not. We had a discussion about drugs and reasons for and against them, personally i'm not a drugs person, I find that I do too much sports to allow it into my system. I hear a lot about 'weed' being completely safe, which is a reason why it is so common, but I was thinking more along the lines of the stronger drugs. Since it's not one of my strong points I was wondering if our lovely escapists had some info and opinions, maybe some firsthand experience?

Which should be legal and why?
Why do you choose to use or not use them?
Does your opinion of a person change if you find out they use drugs?

Which should be legal and why?
- None should be legal! Everyone is weak and will get addicted, then will start to rely on it and then maybe regret it later.

Why do you choose to use or not use them?
- I don't use them and have never taken drugs before. I'm not even sure why people do it but if it's because they feel down then drugs is a bad solution.

Does your opinion of a person change if you find out they use drugs?
- A little, not much really.

I think marijuana should be legal because if you consider its effects, there are more potent subsances (alcohol) and more addictive ones (nicotene) that are currently legal.

I've smoked marijuana before, but I don't or won't use hardcore drugs because of their long term effects and level of dependency. I currently don't do any drugs because I have to take random urine tests for baseball team, otherwise I would probably smoke weed every now and then.

Depending on the drug, my opinion would change, namely because I wosld have to be more cautious around them.

Which should be legal and why?
- I think that marijuana and only that should be legal, and before you all descend upon me for this, let me explain.

I live in British Columbia, Canada, which is arguably one of the most lenient places in the Americas for marijuana use. As such, a lot of people I know use it frequently and have easy access to it.

I want you to disregard a lot of the ads you see or hearsay you hear about pot. It's not a good thing to be doing all the time - what is, really - but it's not the brain-melting devilgrass you hear it is.

I've smoked pot a couple times, and I will explain to you what it does: it makes you hungry, it makes you tired, and it makes everything really funny. That's it. I personally get pretty drawn-in and reclusive when I'm stoned, and prefer to just hang out, eat oranges and watch the Comedy Network. That's it.

That said, it's not really my thing (I hate feeling so "meh"), but it's not harmful and really relieves stress. It's no worse than cigarettes or alcohol.

Why do you choose to use or not use them?
- I experimented when I was a young buck, and most experiences were bad. My morphine trip was terrifying (skin was growing on the walls and was chasing me to the bathroom), and all through my LSD trip I thought I was going to die, and all the other drugs I've tried just weren't for me. Pot is a recreational thing (once a year, tops) and usually only when I'm really stressed, but again, it makes me too lazy to want to do it all the time.

Does your opinion of a person change if you find out they use drugs?
- It depends on the drug, really. If someone tells me they smoke pot, I'm indifferent - if they like to sit at home and listen to Pink Floyd all day instead of doing stuff, that's cool, that's their call. But if it's something like crack, or coke, or any of the rougher shit, then usually my opinion for them drops.

Especially crack and meth. They're such dirty drugs. Of course, that may sound a little hypocritical, coming from a guy who really, really wants to try heroin, just once.

I've been curious abut drugs but I've never been all that willing to try them.

Being drunk is a bad enough feeling to me, so I doubt I need anything even more "influential."

Do I control my own body?

Then I should be able to decide what I want to put or not put in it.

Strange you should say that, i find myself wanting to try some drugs, but i'm too paranoid about what will happen if i do, maybe even unknown allergies will kick in. I've always discussed with friends and we've all said we want to get addicted to a drug, just to see how hard it actually is to stop, but we won't do it, simply because it flips your life around when you can't get off it.

Personally i don't dislike people that do drugs, some of them are shady people, but they generally seem like good people. Although i have a burning hatred for anyone who smokes cigarettes, i just think that it's dirty and unneccesary, so my opinion of them will drop heavily if they smoke, but not so much if they are doing drugs.

Well gee, this topic hasn't been done in about 2 or 3 hours...at least you ask some specific questions.

1. All decriminalised if not legalised. It's a toss up between making them easily available and safer or just not punishing users but leaving drugs full of cutting agents and I'm still undecided.

2. Feels good/habit

3. I can usually relate to them better, but if they are a dick then they are a dick, no matter what drugs they may or may not do.

Not true. Not everyone would get addicted. Only those who actually have the active addiction gene.

There's many reasons why someone may do drugs, you'll never be able to single out ONE particular reason why it happens. It's different for each individual.

I've never used them and don't intend to do so, I hate what they do to people.
Another question for you, and maybe others who have replied like you, what would you say/do if one of your loved ones got addicted to a drug? Would you still feel the same towards them as you do now?

Of course, I don't mean to sound condemning of those who have become addicted, I wouldn't just abandon them.
I would try and help them as best I could.

So far from what I hear it's because people get nervous and depressed but I would like to hear these many reasons please.

Many people i know from a few years back did it because they thought it was 'cool'..
Some of them were even forced into it through peer pressure, especially the girls.

Thats very common as well but thats more because of stupidity and weakness than something desperate.

It would be pretty interesting if someone actually calculated the cost of keeping drugs illegal. I wouldn't be surprised if it was well into the billions (not to mention the social costs) and to be quite frank, there doesn't seem to be any clear bonuses to keeping them that way. Seems like there would be better ways to allocate our tax dollars.

Bill Hicks makes a great argument for why weed should be legal.
