The long anticipated game, Duke Nukem forever has finally been released to the public. Much hype has surrounded the game since it has been in production for 14 years now. Even when the game was meant to be released in May, the developers still had to delay it for an extra month. Now that the game is out, how have people reacted to it?

So far, the reviews have been sour. Many people have been extremely dissapointed by the game and it's build-up. Some of its strongest weakpoints include its outdated graphics, weak storyline and dry humour.
Gearbox; the developers of the games have postponed the games release for such a long amount of time, gamers expected an outstanding experience. They will be dissapointed. Personally, I am surprised gearbox didn't see it coming:

It has been 14 years, so a sequel game for Duke would have be impress the gaming world. To live up to its expectations, it would require outstanding graphics, an immense storyline and tasteful humour. Sadly, the new game lacks in all of these.

I doubt this will be the death of Duke Nukem, however, this is gonna be a gaming mistake that will go down in history.

What are your views on the game? Would you consider buying it? If you already have, what have you thought of it?
Uh, yeah, it already is the death of Duke Nukem. The lawsuit against its creators should have been the death of Duke, but this will suffice. We've been tellin' y'all for a while now that it's cheap manufactured nostalgia and dated, classless references and shitty game mechanics. We did our prophet jobs, can we get paid already? :p

Steam friends list:
2 ingame Duke Nukem Forever.
4 in a non-steam game Duke Nukem Forever (each of those having pirated it basically)

To be honest I had no idea what this game was at all until then - but seems to me it's failed pretty badly xD

The game is everything I thought it would be. A mindless alien shooter filled with foul language and tasteless humor and almost non-existent story. That's what Duke Nukem is all about. I don't know what people expected it to be. It's exactly what it's supposed to be.

I bought it and had fun with it. It's not a masterpiece but it's a fun game.
My sentiments exactly. I don't get why all the hate is surrounding this game. Did people really expect this to be the Second Coming of Gaming? It's just Duke with some more modern FPS conventions. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Just... enjoy it at face value.

It's really not a bad game. Honest.

I just bought the game, and after playing for an hour, I don't see why people are hating on it at all. It's exactly what I expected. The gameplay is pretty much what I'd imagine Halo to be if Halo had power-ups and variation. So while it's not the tremendously groundbreaking epic masterpiece Yahtzee reviewed two years ago, the gameplay is, if nothing else, absolutely adequate.
What sets the game apart is that it made me chuckle about as often as the Portal games did. If manages to keep up the tone I won't be having problems going through the entire game with a stupid grin on my face.

Really, the only two things I can complain about is that I'd rather be able to carry more weapons, and that the controls on PC feels like a console port in the bad way. Otherwise, fuck the haters, I'm enjoying the game.

Not a chance, while I was disappointed that Duke Nukem: Forever no longer felt like a Duke Nukem game I am still enjoying it, as long as I don't compare it to Duke Nukem 3D.

Too Human still takes the title of the greatest gaming fail ever in my opinion, and that's a well defended title.

If I had the spare cash laying around then I'd consider getting Duke Nukem: Forever, and as for why there's been so much backlash surrounding it, let's remember there has been 14 years of hype surrounding this thing.

14 years.

Considering that even some of out longest runnest series and MMO's haven't even been around that long this means that out of any game out there Duke Nukem has built up more anticipation, hype and high expectations than a game that ultimately amounted to a cheeky parody of shooters at it's time really should have.

In short, I think the main reason everyone's starting to pick holes in it is because there were a fair few people who were expecting it to be the second coming of video games because of it's long development time when the reality of the matter was that the long development time was actually the result of general havoc and trouble in the game's creation rather than a solid 14 years of polishing.

As a result you should be thankful you got a game at all, nevermind one that from the gameplay I've seen actually looks pretty good. (as for the people complaining about the graphics, why is it that there are a large number of PC gamers who say 'we'd take worse graphics for better games any day' yet the graphical quality of the game comes up as one of your criticisms?)

I'm going to buy the game soon. I don't expect it to be something that changes the genre, but instead I think that it's going to be fun. I can't wait to hear the one-liners again.

You missed exploration... and gunplay... and good level design... and gunplay.
Everything that made the gameplay of DN3D good is now gone. All we are left is with duke, and to tell you the truth, he had been outdated for years.

I don't much get the hype. It's taken over a decade, but so did the latest Guns N' Roses album and that wasn't really that great. I played the original Duke Nukem, and it was fun in a general kind of way. I probably wont be getting this one.

Uhh...... you DO know that 3D Realms were the main developers and Gearbox has only had the Duke Nukem franchise since September of last year, right?
They actually have had it for two years. It wasn't until that time last year that they said anything about it.

They had plenty of time to properly redesign the game for the times, and keep it to it's roots (being able to carry all weapons and switching to the one you want), but Gearbox failed. If other developers can make games all the time with a development time of a year and still make their games good with the proper play mechanics, Gearbox could have easily scrapped what they had received, started from scratch, and made Duke Nukem the way it was suppose to be. Being able to carry all the guns on a console controller is easy, Gearboxes excuse that it wouldn't work is bullshit. Duke Nukem 3D worked fine ported to the consoles with being able to carry all guns, DNF would have been fine too.

I don't care what people say about multiplayer, or that two weapon limits are part of this era in gaming, or that people new to the game won't be able to grasp not having a two weapon limit, a core part of Duke Nukem has always been carrying all the guns.

Reading over this thread I think I have an analogy for Duke Nukem Forever.

Its like that greasy burger from a maybe questionable restaurant that's really unhealthy, but really tasty at the same time.

No, its not the best food out there.
No, you wouldn't want to eat it all the time.

But damn, when you're in the mood, its all you want!

Thoughts on that thought?

haters gonna hate.

you all just be jelly that you`ll never be as manly as the duke.

There seem to be two kinds of gamers these days:people who hate anything that doesn`t involve smarts or people who hate games where you don`t go 20 seconds without killing something. *sigh* what happened to the real gamers?

Play this game, and you won't just be in control of Duke, you will be Duke.
You see, this just isn't true, and is the exact reason people are disappointed.

You won't be Duke, you'll be a wimpy, cover-taking, two-gun holding, getting drunk off one beer, slow moving, health regenerating shadow of Duke and everything old Duke represented.

He's supposed to be an invincible badass but they turned him into another weak little grunt from other modern shooters like Halo and COD, which do all this but do it better.

If you expected this game to be any good, you need to wake up ~_~. 14 years in development is longer than most people have been gaming. Not addressed to the OP, just people who bought this in general.

It's pretty poor and stikes me as a rush job. The regenerating health, two weapon system and lack of ammo pick ups, are there to balence the game, giving you what you need for the section your at. But at the same time this remove any choices you have to make in the game. There's no need to explore, so no need for the devs to create more map than the bare minimum. It holds you hand throughout the game and just gets the experience over and done with.

It has awful graphics as well. Not the texturing and stuff (though these are pretty bad), just the whole design aesthetic. Brown enemies against brown backgrounds with a brown sky up above. The cover art isn't really indictive of the game's art direction at all.

In the same vein as what Duke is, I'd say Quake 4 is a better game (as much as I dislike it). And Bullet Storm comes closer to the expectaions for what Duke should have been.

Waiting now for Serious Sam 3 (even that's looking a little brown, but we'll see).
