Koei has gotten to the point where they have a fanbase that are willing to buy each new release basically without thinking about it, so from their perspective they don't have to create a whole new game to get people to buy it in reasonable numbers. Dynasty Warriors (and its spinoffs) are what they are; Hack and Slash games that work as reasonable stress relivers.

Much like the Armored Core series (though this series changes things with each new release), the fans will pick it up and have a blast while the general public (this includes the reviewers) will be left bewildered as to why people enjoy the series so much without seemingly changing with every outing, and as such dog on it.

I find DW to be fun, but I don't really need more than one per console.
All, it's just button mashing. There is no skill involved. It's fun in parties, but after a while it gets old.

IGN's not criticizing the game for being 'unplayable', per se, but just tired after years of samey iterations.

It's a game to play when you can't be arsed to play a game.
Like watching Friends when you can't be arsed to watch the telly.

It's not even "samey", it IS the same game. It might be OK if it was good, but there are still the same flaws that haven't been fixed since the beginning of the series!

And if I'm going to mash my fingers into bloody stubs, I'd rather do it playing something completely over the top and ridiculous like Godhand...

DW is an acquired taste for certain, but it doesn't deserve the bashing it gets on IGN. I've been a fan since the original on PS2, and I can understand someone not liking the button mashing, but for me, it's the same as the patterns in fighting games, imo. They incrementally improve each version and have done a lot to relieve the most hand cramping portions of the combos; they are more free-form now. The RPG elements are clearer and more controlled by the player.

I think you are correct in thinking DW gets bashed at IGN, I've noticed the same thing. That doesn't mean you can't like it. I do, and I just consider this something I'm going to have ti disagree with a lot of folks about. If you at all are unsure, rent. ;)

I`ve always enjoyed the Dynasty Warriors series, right from the 2-D fighter on the PS1 and I find the games to be good fun. The problem with Dynasty Warriors is there`s not too much they can do to change the combat system. Koei tried to change it slightly in DW6 and from what I could tell, fan reception to it was poor. Though I disagree with the frequency the games are released, I really don`t think they deserve such a bad rating.

Ha! That's my house right there.

I've always liked the stout dude with the hammer and the gray hair. His gruff nature amuses me, and I like to think that deep down he has a heart of gold and helps out with Rotary and other such noble community groups.

Xiahou Dun ftw!
Guan Yu('s beard)>Xiahou Dun to be honest ;D
What? What? WHAT? (sorry, too much Dr Who)
Guan Yu is a freaking heffer. Xia would get in like half a dozen hits before Guan-dao (inside joke) even knew what happened.
Dont even get me started on Sakon Shima.

*runs back to the tardis*

*EDIT* Btw what is everyones fave character ?
Sakon is fail. Far too slow for me, can't stand him. I think you're underestimating the power of Guan Yu's beard as well. Have you seen that thing? It's massive! Admittedly Xiahou Dun has an eyepatch in his favour, but nevertheless I still think the beard would win.

I've always been a fan of Zhou Yu and Zhao Yun. They're both very solid characters who are pretty damn powerful in their own right from start to finish.

Zhou Yu? Is that guy from the Wu faction? The one with the sword and the long girly hair? :p

Meh, I've found him to be weak, although his musou gauge fills up very fast...
Now Zhao Yun, that's a beat.
ARGH FUCK. You changed your avatar again. God that caught me off balance. It's a non-moving one as well, what the hell man?

Zhou Yu is:

*coughs* So yeah, the sword and the long manly hair. He sets things on fire, which is why I like him.

Some Characters were Removed from the game, and they let Changed Weapons for most of them to match a More Realistic tone that was Not Needed, they Improved Every other Aspect to the game engine, other then those changes it is done Quite well, and they Removed those Invis walls and let you and your horse swim

Although I do like the look of Zhou Tai they screwed up his combos. He flicks his sword out and only really slashes in front of him so hes no good at crowd control. Xiahou and Sakon do great sweeping loops with their swords which has enough speed to keep enemies on their toes and enough power to put them on their asses.
Cmon Amnestic, in Warriors Orochi he was kick ass. (especially since even without any musou he had that cheap crowd clearing lightning attack)

Btw why the hell is it whenever you fight Lu Bu hes a absolute machine who can always kill you easily yet when you get him hes a slow moving avg damage heffer who aint worth the hassle of levelling ?
"Game Mechanics" in the case of Lu Bu.

If we're including Warriors Orochi into the mix than I'm afraid Hanzo and Nobunaga take the cake. Hanzo's got a murderous counter attack, crazy crowd control and overpowered single target combos and though his weapon his about half a foot of range, his crowd control attack extends out to give it massive area of effect. Nobunaga's just a straight up high speed power junky. Not great range at first but his magic powers more than make up for it.

This would seem to be the case if other games that do the same exact thin' did not receive the same incredibly low scores. Take nearly every sports game for example, you get maybe one new mode each game and ever so slightly upgraded graphics and yet the games still receive scores that are, at the very least, respectable.
