In Dynasty Warriors 6 they tried to change the formula (and the characters were rebuilt from the ground up). It looks prettier and each character has it's own unique weapon back (instead of the bakers dozen who had moves that were each very similar). Zhou Yu no longer uses a sword for example, he got a staff instead... anyway.

Brass tacks Dynasty Warriors combat system was overhauled so that it didn't have the combo system we all knew and loved back in the previous games, instead they went with a "renbu" system which means that your combo is based around how much whacking you've been doing, you no longer have a bow and your charge attack is somewhat useless (except if you're one of those guys who gets REALLY deep in the game and has to do everything perfectly). The items were removed (you know, tiger amulet that junk?) so you can't level up one character and use those lvl 20 items on your next character and just wipe out an army.

With the rebuilding of the characters came a slash to the roster. I think the # of characters were cut in half compared to 5 and even then they put in cloned move sets for most of the characters you had to do special stuff to unlock.

They added a character class system. The only one I remember (it's been like a year since I last played) is that certain characters (zhou yu and Liu Bei for example) had speed, now basically you activate a special ability (like musou rage from previous iterations) and certain things happen, for speed your character takes off and runs, you steer your character and attack and slaughter close to 100 guys if they're packed densely enough. The other one I can recall off the top of my head was Volley, you activate it and the entire area around you is showered in arrows. Anything killed during these attacks will often drop XP boosts (the lowliest soldier drops five when these are activated, and everyone else drops one tier above their normal).

My biggest beef with DW6 is that it didn't take full advantage of the power of its system (XB360). They could have crammed ALOT more opponents into the maps and overall made the maps much more interesting.

However LuBu's musou mode final state is INSANE (You as LuBu take on everyone else that is even MENTIONED throughout the game in one massive orgy of murder.)

I think Dynasty Warriors is so attached (for good or ill) to it's gameplay style that if it were to change it it'd loose some of it's following and people wouldn't pick it up simply because they had played the previous games and thought it was the same. Kinda like Halo if it yutzed with it's shooty shooty gameplay and tried to introduce a character that wasn't a supersold- oh wait... bad example. I guess the closest thing to a "This is how the Genre and all it's bastard children should be!" in terms of gameplay would be Diablo. While it doesn't have quite the amount of ripoffs that Dynasty Warriors has, nor does it have as many sequels, but Diablo is held up as what all the developers are shooting for when they make that type of game. If they took Diablo and wrenched out it's guts to make it seem more innovative it'd probably loose alot of it's hardcore fanbase (just look at the outcry over the lack of a stats system and the auto level up for example, now take that and make it the entire player base and you've got what would happen if DW changed it's core mechanics). DW is so entrenched within the genre it can't pull itself out without a complete rebranding.
... That is all

I like the series, it is therapeutic to hack through the hoards of minions.
And I have a fondness for the effeminate men for some reason I can't fathom. Zhou Yu, Mitsunari Ishida, Mistsuhide Aketchi and even Zhang He, although he tends to have bad voice acting.

I've found them to be a lot like sports games, each version adds a few minor tweaks, better graphics and maybe a new game mode, but they get rated a lot harsher than sports games for not doing anything majorly new. Also like sports games, they are great fun with friends and have a long mode of doing the same thing again and again with slightly different characters or teams.

They get marked unfairly. If the IGN's criticisim is that it's the same game as the last one and reptitive, most sports games should also get 3.5's.

The reviews I've read for the Warriors series often points to one glaring flaw: It's all the same. Play as one warrior and you've played it all. Which is of course, incorrect as any long time player of the series can tell you. Sure the underlying formula has barely changed but professional reviewers often fail to note the general improvements which made one title better than the next.

There's also the issue of having an inconsistent perspective. Some games are lambasted for staying true to a proven method and sometimes, they are not. I'm not saying that Koei is entirely innocent when it comes to milking but they're also getting much undeserved flak. A game doesn't need to be groundbreaking or innovative to be fun.

The voice acting kinda' grows on you. Or at least it did for me. In a cheesy B grade flick kind of way.

Dynasty warriors isnt that bad. It's just since DW2 it's become the same game with slight (almost microscopic) improvements. I just have a feeling it's a series that is suffering from the sonic review syndrome which I call it when a game is automatically given a bad score because the reviewers in the past shown a blatant dislike for a game in a series. Honestly I dont think there is anything DW can do that will ever get it a great grade in the eyes of reviewers. I for one love the games though. Nothing like some mindless beat em up fun.

Koei also does a TBS grand strategy game based on the RTK universe, but I think it's only released in Japanese, and unofficially in other Asian languages. It feels like an excel spread sheet really. That's up to the 11th or 12th iteration now.

I'd like to see them combine the two games, and create something similar to the Total war series, but with more RPG action, and a command interface more similar to Brothers in Arms.

The latest which is the 11th is out for PC in English but it goes back to it's roots of grand strategy where you are the ruler and your goal is ultimate conquest. Previously in 10, the game focused on the individual. You could play as a free officer, vassal, prefect or ruler. 10 for PC is available only in Chinese and Japanese but the folks at Kongming.net have translation patches. They're pretty cheap these days.

As for your second statement, their console exclusive Kessen series is what you're looking for.

Dynasty Warriors is good, but I like Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War much better.

It's a bit more realistic with its squad-based combat(besides the Mamaluks and elephant riders rampaging through the fields of France)

I also like the overall feel of the game better. You truly feel like you're in a war in that game. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Dynasty Warriors (besides, the same company makes it).

The games are good as long as you don't expect anything new. All I've played is Gundam and 6, though. But Gundam was pretty damn good. 6 is fun, too, but there aren't any robots...bastards.

I use to be addicted to these games, especially the strategy game of RTK (IX specifically) however the constant 'upgrades' and tediousness of the series caught up with me. I recently decided to give the game a whirl again and am admittedly having a blast with DW6 however they are rent games or only worthy of a purchase used at half price.

If you never played it you really shouldn't vote or even post. I hated it til I played it. Its far more addictive then it looks. In this day of FPS spamming this is a nice change.

Dynasty Warriors fucking owns. KOEI pretty much invented the one guy versus a billion genre.

Edit: And have you heard the music?

I've only ever played Dynasty Warriors 4 and 6 with my cousin who owns the games so I don't have much experience with the series but I liked it. I enjoyed the button mashing and how ridiculously over the top the game is(See Lu Bu). I think it is a really fun game to play with another person but I can see it getting tedious when you're playing by yourself. I do think it is adequate and doesn't deserve most of the hate it gets. I really could care less what IGN says anyway, I don't base my opinion of a game I've never played before on numbers, I judge it for how well it did keeping me entertained and Dynasty Warriors did that for me.

Also the music is freaking amazing!

I know I'll never really be a 'snob' at anything. I always preferred Miller High Life over Heineken, I prefer Seagram's to Bombay, I prefer 7-11 coffee to Starbucks, I don't think I've ever liked an Academy Award Best Picture winning movie, heck, I even prefer tap water to bottled. When it comes to videogames, I guess I follow the same pattern. For instance, I'll take NFL Blitz over Madden anyday.

It just seems to me that nothing IGN ever says is good ever really is, and everything they say is mediocre is where my fancies generally lie. IGN has made me go out and blow my dough on titles that severely fall short on fun (I'm sorry for you Halo fans, but **blecch**, whatever happened to GoldenEye?), and then when I happen to end up with a game that provides me fun for months, I find that they gave it terrible ratings: Vigilante 8 (and Second Offense), NFL Blitz, NHL Hitz, they even have the audacity to criticize the Fire Emblem series? What's wrong with Fire Emblem?

But the point I'm coming to is that I went on their site today and saw they gave DW6 for the PS2 a 3.5. Now, I thought ratings like those were reserved for games like Elephantz: Poop-Scooping for Kidz and the related ilk of nonsense: low-budget third party games for people who don't know what to buy their grandchildren for Christmas. Now, I have yet to experience DW6 on any console, and I won't pretend to vouch for it. But I know the shortcomings of the Dynasty Warriors games going back to DW4 (my first experience with them); I don't even need IGN to tell me. Let me guess, co-op slows the game down like a b****, you can't see twenty feet in front of you and people magically dis-and-reappear around you. Hey, guess what? I don't have a problem with that. I'd rather play a game with those problems, than play one of those 9.8 point games like Halo 2/3, that are boring and monotonous.

But it got me wondering, so I checked out the review for Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires, probably my favorite and most played of the series, to see it got a whopping five point nothing. Honestly? You have a huge cast of playable characters, not to mention you can create your own (albeit with somewhat limited options), you can build each one up as you see fit as you build up your nation and add people to your army, you get an array of tactics, you can be good or evil, and you have around ten different stories you can play, including the "randomized" play mode. All of that on top of the normal, run around and kill people gameplay. And when you're talking about putting it on the hardest difficulty with further options (lke limiting your officer count) to set the cpu against you, it's not like the game is devoid of challenge. What am I missing? Does this game really suck that bad? And, if so, how?

It's so repetitive, it actually wins in repetitive gameplay more than Mario / Zelda games. At least those tried to do things differently, even if they are a little.
