How many of you honestly look at that and think you relate? If you do, you're part of the problem.

I have seen this yes, particularly among most of the people who've been around since I've been here. Personally I take everything with a grain of salt unless the person has been around since 2008 or if I've determined them to be reasonable.

I've been here since December last year and in that time I feel, not to be arrogant (or indeed, elitist) or anything, that I've become one of the more well known and recognisable Escapists. Back when I first joined, these were people like Baby Tea, Labyrinth, Gallatea, UltraJoe, and so on. Nowadays, it's still them, but also people like Max, Cpt. Oblivious, Neonbob, pimppeter2 and the like, who I notcie mostly joined around the same time as me. I've not really noticed much elitism among the sort of people I've listed as examples. However, some people, for example, Internet Kraken (no offence to Kraken) and others like him, have got a bit of an elitist problem. This is something I never noticed all that time ago when I first joined.

Take Kraken, for example (just since he's the one I named, this isn't meant as a personal attack or anything, it applies to others as well). Although he seems to have calmed down a bit now, for a few weeks a short while ago I noticed every other post from him was "SEARCH BAR!", and this isn't on. That's the sort of thing that leads to problems with people claiming the Gonzos are elitists, when the majority of us aren't.

So what we have is a small group of Gonzos becoming elitists, while the vast majority of Gonzos are perfectly friendly and not snobbish at all. But the minority do it so often that it soon ends up looking like the Gonzos as a whole are responsible, and assumptions like this start, and just get worse. So really, there isn't a problem with elitism on the Escapist. It's simply a few elitists causing scorn for the entire Gonzo community as a whole.

I understand what you mean, I get that feeling too sometimes.
Actually, all users in general seem to sometimes think that they are elite because they think this is the best forums, and so they sometimes act as self-righteous jerks... sometimes.

[small]I have the lowest post count that has posted in this thread so far :( edit- nevermind, second lowest, damn ninjas[/small]
It's now the third lowest, actually.

Shit, did I just become 'elitist'?

Eh it aint so bad. Sure there is a larger ratio of elitists here than on most forums, but the positive part of that, is that the intelligence level(for the most part) remains above the negative values.

Trolls don't bother me, they're somewhat funny actually.

And finally the new users. Well I do often scold them, but in my defence I don't look at their post count until after I post most of the time. If I do happen to look at it and still scold them, I give them constructive criticism.

I thought you meant people thinking they're better than others just by acting pretentious. When it's just in post numbers nobody gives a shit, but damn are there pompous asses here who think they're better than the rest. Mostly Americans who think they're cool by trying to suck Europeans' collective dicks by saying America sucks.

And of course, the best way to prove you're not a general twat is to insult vast swathes of the userbase.

You're doing a bang up job there.
You know, normally I'd try to defend myself but after a week where I've been told that I'm a miserable little cultist, that my opinions don't matter because I don't think Halo is the tool of Satan and seen PC gamers ***** and moan that they are being forced to play the same game as the console-gaming peons... I just don't care any more.

There are no trolls and no one uses shorthand. I use shorthand everywhere else. So, ya, higher standards so people act more normal here.

We do, and we don't at the same time. I can't really explain it because I haven't thought of the right words yet.

I thought this was about our tendency to say we're some bastion of the internet, in which case that's slightly justified but wrong.

But yeah, I haven't really noticed that much elitism with post counts. Someone who's gone gonzo is more noticed, but I haven't noticed flaming based on having fewer posts.

Well... I've only come across one guy who was being a wanker, and he only had about 1500 posts. It isn't like he came out and said "stfu mate, take a look below my avatar, wut now?!! that's right *****, YOUR NOTHIN, NOTHIN I SAYS", but you could just sense that he felt his being a douchebag was validated by his post count.

Yeah. You do see a lot of "Welcome to the Escapist" even when it's clearly not needed.

Speaking of Gone Gonzo, does anyone have a list of the ranks of the Escapist?

I think elitism is ingrained into the entire gaming culture. It's much easier to compete with someone than it is to try and stand on even ground with them, be their friends and all that. At least, that's the case for some people.
Joy! Someone I can pick on!
How Ironic that you would choose to use one of your first posts at the Escapist in a thread that requires experience of the escapist to answer intelligently.
Welcome to the Escapist anyway... But don't expect anyone to listen to you until you have more posts... A lot more...
kidding

If anything, I've noticed the guys who say "SEARCH BAR!!!!!" have lower post counts then the OP they say it to. And have been hear for less time then the OP, more often then not.

It's like I say, people look at post count and their 'status' and decide that that person is 'elite' and add them as friends or flame and hate people with lower posts then them.

I thought it was assumed that everyone with 1000+ posts acted slightly elitist. I'd like to think I'd be a prick with or with out my post count, but to say it doesn't enlarge my e-penis would be a bold faced lie.

I try not to call people names or pigeonhole them as being a particular sort of poster, but I do think a large number of Escapists need to put more effort into the creation of both threads and posts. Why? Because I remember when people, on average, did those things more. And the forums were a lot more fun/thoughtful.

If those things make me elitist, then so be it.
