I haven't been a member of The Escapist for a terribly long time, but ever since I started to be a bit more active on the forums, I've been recieving friend requests from complete strangers.

Now, normally I don't mind friend requests. There are a number of people I never even met in real life but who I still consider to be my friends. It's one of the coolest things about the internet, if you ask me. It's for this reason that I pretty much always accept those friend requests and add them to my friendlist as well.

But out of all the friend requests I've had on The Escapist, only one of them even bothered to send a message to talk to me about why they wanted to be my friend, and even that one only sent me one line of text and has never contacted me ever since. That's hardly what I call 'friendly'. I get the feeling that most of the people friending me only do so to get the 'X friends added' badge, which is pretty damn sad.

I haven't sent any friend requests myself because I don't feel I know anyone on this board well enough to call my friend, but if I did I'd at least send them a message explaining to them why I'd like to be their friend, and if they were interesting enough for me to want to befriend I'd certainly not add them to the list only to completely ignore them afterwards.

What's your opinion on this curious behaviour, forumites?

I usually get friend requests when I post a funny reply to someone and they like me for it.

Soon I will befriend the world with my awesomeness!

Well, I'm very rarely added by anyone on the forums and the people who have added me have never bothered to take the time out to introduce themselves, so I'm pretty neutral when it comes down to it.

If I've never, ever interacted with someone who sends me a friend request, I just ignore it. I'm not that hard up for badges, and I'd prefer knowing that people I actually have fun talking to are online.

Most confusing was a guy who sent me a friend request...after a thread where we had vehement disagreements, and I'd resolved that the guy was a complete ass. I mean, we never interacted directly, but he was agreeing with someone I was in an argument with. I couldn't figure it out...

I like friend requests no matter who they come from. Self-esteem issues aside, I used to send friend requests to people who were particularly funny or clever. Now I dont send friend requests to anyone, though i don't really know why. I agree that sending a message with the request is always appreciated.

Well, I have practically never had a friend request from anyone over the Escapist.

But I've had a turn in pickiness on my XBL friends list. I recently defreinded three people for being twelve and Scottish.

I don't know why people add me as a friend. I guess at times it's because I am in the RP section which is a much smaller community than off-topic, at times maybe because someone likes my posts and maybe at times because I am on the Escapist IRC.

Regardless, I don't look to much into it and befriend them anyway.

I think it's pretty cool, a little confusing but it's usually sorted out with a bit of background building.

I think its becuase your avatar reminds me/others of a creepy child molester. No offense if thats your actual picture.

I usually have a lot of interacting with my online friends through quoting, etc but to me I mainly add someone if I see them and think 'oh they're cool' after talking to them for awhile.

Hah, I'm pretty sure I'm the one who spawned this topic, as I just added you as a friend not long ago :)

I did it for a few reasons; I've seen you around the forums and I love your avatar and name, and one of the topics you recently posted on caught my attention, and the thing you said finally convinced me to add you (I never usually bother adding friends on this, every friend bar you and one other has added me, so this was not in an attempt to whore badges).

Though I probably wont PM you or anything. I basically did it because whenever someone adds me as a friend, it makes me feel like the things I've been contributing here are worthwhile, so I wanted you to get that same feeling :D

I don't care if random people add me.

Incidentally, the poll options made me lose the game.

It's not just you who does this, but yeah you were the one that motivated me into making a thread about it. :p

It's cool, since now at least I know why you added me.

I tend to get friend requests after little exchanges in the forums and stuff, OR if I make an occasional but particularly epic post.

I'll add whose posts interest me in order to keep track of their opinions.
