I said the same thing, but I don't usually accept the friend requests. The way I look at it, people enjoy what I wrote, and would like to keep track of other posts that I make. That, or they're just looking to boost their friend list. Only two people have actually messaged me, and everyone that I have friended, I've messaged at least once explaining why I sent them the request.
Then again though, I haven't gotten many recently, so I take it I'm not terribly popular on here.
the friends system on the Escapist are more like a positive Karma system. The more friends you have, the longer you have been doing things that people like.
that's actually how I prefer friends lists to be. I don't need every person I friended to talk to me, and I don't want to talk to them necessarily.
There are a few exceptions, but they're few.
If you don't like it, don't accept them.. It's not meant as an insult, more of a nod.

I've found that originally I added people as friends simply because we had similar interests or something else in common, but now I've grown largely apathatic towards the idea. Interestingly, it mirrors my behaviour on Facebook, where I originally did seek out people I knew to add as friends and now don't care at all (there is one exception to my usual lack of friend adding... it's not hard to figure out either). Similar here, people sometimes add me and I always add them back, but I don't actively seek to add friends.
I usually only add people back. There are quite a few people I like on The Escapist who I do not consider "friends." If they add me at some point, I'll probably add them back. Otherwise, meh.
