New Vegas over Fallout 3, but the lone wonderer over the courier
thing I liked about the lone wanderer is you have some connection with the game world, you have a past ect

still fallout NV is still great, morality is bettwe and its waaaaaayyy less depressing than fallout 3

plus it has a better ending/endings than fallout 3 (where you pretty much get slaped in the face for being good..thank god for broken steel)

The Brotherhood was never about being nice, and the fact that they are dying out is the point, they are too reclusive.
The Brotherhood was about hoarding technology, and using it to rebuild Civilisation. The first game showed this quite well, where despite sending you on a fools quest, they were more then willing to team up with you after you succeeded, in order to stop the Master. If they were purely about just hoarding technology, then it would be impossible for any of the Fallout Hero's (except for the Warrior) to learn the use of Power Armor.

While they began a period of stagnation and became flanderised sure, but they still aided you against the Master and his Army of Super Mutants, despite there being no technological gain in it for them

I liked Fallout 3 more.

Both games have weak stories and are buggy, but New Vegas crashed so damn often and bugged out to much. It would crash so much I just couldn't take it. Stopped playing and sold it. Fallout 3 crashed for me as well but not to the same extent.

And New Vegas just looked like a desert, nothing special while FO3 actually looked like it had seen a nuclear war. I know the Mojave Wasteland was mostly missed by the war and it took away from the experience which also pulled me out of the game.

New Vegas was better than Fallout 3 in every single way.

Every single way, and I do mean "every".
I also prefer the BoS in the CW; they were more likable so I actually felt like I wanted to join them and fight for them.
That's what I hated about the BoS in F3. In the original Fallouts the BoS were not likeable and they mostly assholes In Fallout 3 they suddenly become some kind of people saving paladins.

There's no objective reason to like Fallout NV over 3.
1. Far more weapons, more enemy types, more characters, more armor and clothing options, weapon mods---just more in general
2. You take full damage while in VATS now
3. Iron sights
4. Far more quests out of the box than 3 had with all expansions
5. Those quests are much better written and make more sense---no one's preoccupied with robot emancipation, converting cannibals to vampirism or rare kinds of 200-year-old soda when every day is a struggle to survive
6. People are DOING things---in New Vegas there's farms and communities and factions on missions, in 3 everyone who's not a main character is just kind of faffing about
7. New Vegas' main storyline doesn't fall apart with an 11-grade level of scientific understanding
8. New Vegas has a much better companion command system, and every companion has a detailed backstory and accompanying quest related to their history
9. Better-balanced with the different ammo types
10. Super Mutants are a community with character now, instead of being basically orcs
11. Far more branching dialogue options, and more skill checks so your character build affects more facets of gameplay
12. More ways to resolve quests in general---there's 4 factions for which you can complete the main story, all of whom have variations within them
13. Much grayer morality; none of those four factions can really be called "good" or "bad" and there are signs that even their good points could deteriorate
14. Game's smarter in general---just talk to Caesar, and compare that to any dialogue at all from 3
15. S.P.E.C.I.A.L. has been fixed a bit---you will feel the effect of lacking any one of those attributes, whereas in 3 you could easily make a sniper with 1 perception
16. You can't just max everything out and become a demigod now
17. Speech is a VERY useful skill now, used all over the place in loads of dialogues
18. Better perks---most of the ones in 3 were just skill bumps, and even the cooler-sounding ones like Lady-Killer didn't actually have many opportunities for use
19. A better sense of progression in the weapons---in 3 you used Assault rifles and combat shotguns at level 7, and you used combat shotguns and Assault rifles at level 24
20. You can only pick a perk once every other level now, so you don't become overpowered as quickly---and since the perks are better in New Vegas, it's actually a tough choice
21. Hardcore mode, which brings with it the extremely-useful Survival skill
22. Tutorial is short and you can walk away at any point during it
23. Traits are back, adding yet more personalization to each character, and the goofy stuff is in the Wild Wasteland perk so that it doesn't smack you in the face when you're trying to take the game seriously

Fallout 3 by far, and for a number of reasons.

1. Better story.
2. Actually functioned.
3. Overall much better DLC, even if some still really sucked.
4. Newer experience. New Vegas was really just a rehash, so nothing was "new".
5. Liam Neeson >>> Matthew Perry
6. Way way WAY better ending (well, as long as you include Broken Steel)

I was going to click that I liked both equally but New Vegas DLC's and hardcore mode push it over for me.

Old World Blues is the only game I've played in my memory that I thought, 'I want to do that again!' immeadiately after finishing it...

was so weird.

Fallout 3. Without a question.

Yes, I'll agree, FO:NV did do almost everything better; real-time combat was improved via ironsights and weapon mods, roleplaying was improved with Faction Affiliation and Hardcore Mode, and the story was... Not necessarily better, but far more engaging.

Fallout 3, however, was more atmospheric. Which made it infinitely better.

I've played every Fallout game to date (Yes, even Tactics), and I'm honestly going to say that Bethesda's team envisioned the nuclear wasteland far, far better than Obsidian ever did.

It's like Halo 3 versus Halo: Reach. Yes, the newer game (Reach, New Vegas) are, all things considered better games, but they simply can't hold up against their older siblings in the grand scheme of things.

And besides, I play PC, so I fixed all of the problems Fallout 3 had, and added in iron-sights and Hardcore Mode, via mods.

Edit: And another thing, New Vegas was superior to Fallout 3 in the fact that you weren't shoehorned into which Faction you were going to fight for. In the original Fallout games, I hated the Brotherhood of Steel - they were horrible to me, withheld rewards and started killing me at the earliest chance they got. Then, all of a sudden, I was fighting for them? I'll admit, I think that it's better that the Brotherhood is in charge of water distribution than the Enclave, but the Enclave have the power to protect the roads and traders from raiders and any other miscreants that want to steal the purified water for themselves.

Fallout: New Vegas has more Grey:Grey morality conflicts there, which is much better.

I love them both, but New Vegas is my favorite. It had a lot more of the "darker" humor from the previous titles and, as said before, wasn't relentlessly depressing. I especially liked the lack of black-and-white choices and characters and situations. The world itself wasn't as action-packed as FO3, though. In FO3, you stumbled over neat areas and buildings every ten feet. There was a lot of empty space in New Vegas.

Also, I loved how you could actually see how settlements worked. There were crops and stuff. People farmed. They didn't drone on about having to scavenge for Salisbury Steaks and Fancy Lad snacks so they didn't starve. It's been 200 years, people. Get your shit together.

New Vegas had a better story and better gameplay.

Fallout 3 had a better setting and atmosphere.

So it's a tie for me.

Fallout 3 for me.
I just didn't feel involved with NV, I had no reason to care for the main quest after I found Benny.

FO3 has a nice urban/wasteland setting which was fun, to me, to explore.
NV is just desert, desert, impenetrable deathclaw/poison bug territory... And more desert.
I just couldn't take it seriously after I slaughtered a couple of hundred NCR troopers and then they would still greet me neutrally after I'd enter one of their camps. Like the developers couldn't fathom the chance that someone would actually side with the Legion.
Sure, you were basically forced to side with the BoS in FO3, but there, the plot and your background made it a natural decision.

Also, the music... Got old REALLY fast. I'm not american, I have no love for country music; my only option being to play in silence.

I already finished NV, now i'm a little while into FO3. So far I think New Vegas is a vast improvement, although 3 has more standout moments, so far. Tranquility lane springs to mind.
The Mojave is sooooo much better than the Capital wasteland (so far). The Capital feels like a flat nothing with the occasional random thing, whereas the things in the Mojave all feel like they're all different and were there for a reason. Obsidian are far better than Bethesda at setting/context based storytelling.

So yeah, New Vegas so far by a long way.

Fallout 3 has one massive thing on it's side, though,

I love both equally for different reasons. Fallout 3's world was much better in my opinion, infinitely more fun to explore I found.
Also they kept weapons more simple; less rare and mildly useless weapons (I'm looking at you Displacer Glove...).
I also felt immersed in the world more. I found myself collecting all the food and water and things of use I could find while RPing because I felt like it was actually a scarcity. In New Vegas all these things felt in total abundance.

However New Vegas gets points because of it's story. It was less apocalypse-y for my tastes, but it worked with the story and all the factions.
I especially loved Lonesome Road and the fact that you were an actual character that had a past.
In Fallout 3 the Vault didn't make you feel like a Vault Dweller because that facade is dropped after a while and you feel like an average waster.

Speaking of which, New Vegas gets bonus points for having a better tutorial.
Fallout 3's always pisses me off, because I want to kill the arrogant, abusive bastard that is the Overseer, but Amata will hate me for it and I want to stay on her good side. Fuck you, tutorial.

Fallout 3 gets points for creating weapons, but New Vegas gets points for crafting everything else and modding them.

Final points are awarded to New Vegas for including a Space Suit and Recharger Pistol, and making me feel liek a retro, apocalyptic Han Solo.

So yeah, equal for very different reasons.

fallout 3 and new vegas are both really good games but fallout 3 seems to be better for the simple fact that its more indulging? i dont think thats the right word im trying to use but fallout 3 has more story to it it seems. i lost the point of new vegas after i found benny. but you never lose sight of the main objective in fallout 3. which is why in my opinion its a better game.
I agree completely. Was the whole point of finding Benny so that you could have your revenge? If so, that should mean mission over, but now you're gonna go take over New Vegas or go join the NCR or whatever? It feels like they wanted two different stories and did a poor job of merging them.

I was so happy to find a pump-action shotgun in the vanilla game.

Throw me in as another vote for New Vegas.
I love Fallout 3 (still do) but New Vegas did everything Fallout 3 did and made it better. The plot in Fallout 3 was too linear for my taste, no matter what you did whether it be saving innocents from mutants and donating your money to church or go on to NUKE A FUCKING VILLAGE and enslave the wasteland populace you'll still be hailed as the hero who saved the wasteland from the evil clutches of the Enclave. In New Vegas you could side with any of the main factions gunning for the Dam, including the villains of the plot. You could even turn all of them away and go for an independant option! It's this variety that really makes me turn toward New Vegas more and the MUCH improved faction system is a real plus to. If I walk into Caesars camp and commit genocide on any man caught wearing a skirt then I can sure as hell bet that the wandering bands of Legion soldiers will focus less attention on attacking random caravans and will avenge their superiors and attack me instead. And it's not just the variety in factions and the plot that I prefer in New Vegas, it's the variety in ordinance and ways to faff around. Fallout 3 had a pretty limited armory with generically titled Assault Rifles, Combat Shotguns, Chinese Pistols, Plasma Rifles and a few unique variations of the weapons. In New Vegas you had a lot more choice in what weapons you could use with multiple flavours of shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles and plasma weapons to choose from and they still managed to throw in some unique weapons aswell! While in Fallout 3 all you could really do to pass the time was raid places you've never been to, plunder everything, sell them on to shops and do quests, with a few "collect the thing and sell it to me" side missions to help earn more cash. In New Vegas... You pretty much have the same thing, plus some Casinos. But damnit those Casinos are a fun addition!

Jesus I've written a lot of stuff. Case in point: I prefer Fallout: New Vegas!
