I'll start on hardcore, and see how I do. If I am too frustrated because I keep dying while looking at everything, I'll probably switch out. But, I have every intention of playing through on Hardcore, so I will at some point.

I just might get tied up exploring and forget about playing for a while, and I won't want to be thinking about drinking water as I discover all the little secrets of the game.

I'm going all the way through it on realistic mode the moment I get it. Start hardcore, finish hardcore. The main reason is to decide whether ot not it feels "realistic" or just "challenging". Either way, it'll be a fun experience.

I can't wait to see what effect dying of thirst in a desert has. I wonder if your character will begin to see mirages?

I'll probably try it, but I usually don't bother with the hardest difficult, because usually all it does is make the game stupid... In most cases all that happens on the hardest difficulty setting is that the enemies become insanely tough and your weapons do absolutely no damage... That is not making the game, that is making the game stupid. If you want to make the game harder, spawn more enemies, give them better gear, make them smarter and have them use more advanced tactics, like ambushes and flanking attacks.

There! rant over

I actually enjoyed one and two ten years and more after their release.
Well that's hardly fair, it's not been out that long :p

aaaanyway, hardcore mode for me, first time. Should be satisfying
by "it" I assume you mean fallout III. it doesn't matter how long a game has been out to enjoy it. i was just commenting that I and II were good after more than 10 years. this is because I respected the quests in those games. I do not much care for the quests in fallout III, which were less intuitive, more "go there do this", which seem to be a common symptom of relatively recent games.

Eh... I probably won't. I may if I get bored, but that seems unlikely. I'm usually a normal difficulty person, so Fallout 3 was just perfect for me.

I was making a joke, but say, you've got my interest, give me an interesting quest that isn't go there do this from fallout 1 or 2 and explain it, because i've rarely seen a quest that doesn't ultimately boil down to "go there, collect this/fix this/talk to this person

in fallout one and two you would often have to talk to many people to solve your problem. You may have even had the option to one or another to achieve the same goal. when trying to solve the murder of a Family member in New Reno you have to talk to many people, and the biggest thing about the quests in one and two Make Connections.
Fallout III is better than most games but it still spells the situation out for you.
I can remember in fallout one that I could hardly figure out how to bust the snakes/skulls, or whoever they were in Junktown, mostly because I was too young to really be intuitive about it.

Since hard on fallout 3 was too easy for me, yes. If they geared up the difficultly all around and made hard mode more difficult then I might consider not bothering with it.
The creators were the guys who made FO2 and Fall out 2 was crazy hard. This game is suppose to be much tougher than 3. They said it is going back to basics.

I really do hope so, I really shouldn't be able to leave a giant pile of fully repaired high-end guns in the middle of my house...right next to my collection of 200 stimpacks and spare ammo pile.
