The title sums up what this thread is about. Which do you prefer, Fallout or The Elder Scrolls? Both are very expansive RPG's with some really good qualities and bad ones. They both have a lot of exploration but a lot of glitches, bugs and crashes. The stories in both aren't amazing, the story is usually shallow, but they have loads of side quests and NPC conversations. Speaking of which, the voice acting is...ok. Usually they use only a handful of voice actors for the game so you'll end up hearing the same guy over and over.

And thats most of the similarities between them. I personally prefer Fallout to TES, mainly because I prefer the setting and 1950's esque feel. But it's a pretty hard choice. Anyways, tell me Escapist which do you prefer?

EDIT: As a couple people have pointed out Fallout 1/2 and Morrowind didn't have shallow stories. I wasn't referring to them because I haven't played either yet. Hope this clears things up a little.

ehhhhhhhhhh, there's no way to say this without proving Yahtzee right about 90% of gamers head's imploding if we go 5 seconds without seeing an explosion, but I like games with guns.

Although I love both, I have to say it's TES for me. Especially after that broken, maddening New Vegas (You had so much potential...I WANTED TO LOVE YOU DAMMIT!) But what it comes down to is that I love fantasy. And Skyrim. (Strokes game box)

Fallout, because to me, putting 12 gauge buckshot in someone's face at muzzle velocity is more fun than shooting fire at them from my bare hands.

FALLOUT by a megaton (even if we are only talking about fallout 3)

better setting

being able to speak

NOT causing me to go "eh" and never play it again

I feel like I'm the minority for this but, I really liked New Vegas. I thought, apart from the bugs, it was an amazing game.

this. I carry a certain shotgun when I play who's sole purpose is face raping. Also think fallout has better quest, they use more dark humor and setting where you can just stare at a room or corpse and wonder what happened to them.

Fallout for a few reasons; post apocalyptic setting, ranged combat focus, dark humor, etc.

Fallout. Sentimental feelings aside, I love the humor of the Fallout series and the setting. Companion characters are bit more memorable as well.

I like them both, but I suppose I have to say I like Fallout a bit more. Partly because Fallout: New Vegas is pretty much my favourite RPG ever (more for the amazing writing and characters, less for the bugs, lag, and freezing) and partly because I prefer sci-fi to fantasy. I just find the Fallout series' world and themes more interesting, despite its unfortunate lack of Sheogorath's glorious presence.

I said both.

Hey! Someone needs to port Sheogorath to New Vegas so he can take Mr. House's spot! You know that'd be awesome.

In the end, it is mostly going to be a debate more of "is fantasy your thing, or is it post-apocalyptic scifi?"
To the topic, however, I personally prefer the elder scrolls universe.

There is much truth in this. One of the things I enjoy most about Fallout 3 is the setting. One of the things I dislike the most about Oblivion is the setting. I don't dislike fantasy in general though, it's just that Cyrodiil just seemed so bloody generic and bland. (Note, I've only played Oblivion and Skyrim, never Morrowind) I got bored so easily with it. Skyrim seems to be a vast improvement, but we'll see if I'm still playing it even six months hence, much less the three years I've been playing Fallout 3...

I'd like to remind you that at times of their release both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 featured quite unique and interesting stories. Also : Morrowind. Following the adventures of Nerevarine, learning about past events that led to Dagoth's Ur actions is part of scenario too. Skyrim ? One may argue that its storyline is dull and crude, but just look at the discussions that emerge from every "who you sided with and why" topics that are born on almost daily basis here. There's depth. If one wants to see it.

Sure, every cRPG could use more dialogues or properly developed characters, but let's face it - both TES and F aren't that bad. They may be underdeveloped, they may lack some features but shallow ? Let me put it this way : which story isn't shallow ? Critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings ? It's massive FedEx mission. Citizen Kane ? Catch the MacGuffin. Dark Tower series ? Catch the MacGuffin with sudden plot twists end Deus ex Machina move.

Point is : every story can be deconstructed to the simplest elements and called "shallow". Sandbox games are special. They are a little similar to the Minecraft or lego puzzles. They leave it up to us - the players - to chose the story we want to build from the elements that are there.
I'm not sure how it is with other people but the story i've built in F or TES series were immersive, epic campaigns.

OT : Fallout. Because of the setting.
