They pulled off freedom and fluidity of movement/combat absolutely perfectly, it's a thing of art.
I can't explain how awesome it is, I mean to put it this way, I hate everything that Prototype is on the surface - viral outbreaks, zombies, mutants, excessive blood&gore, all of that is really not my thing, I can stand it (and will for a game like Fallout 3 for example) but it's not my thing and Prototype is built on and around it.
But the gameplay on it's own is so amazingly fun that I just don't give a shit, there's a bunch of weapons, a bunch of combos, you can move wherever and however you like etc. It also accomplishes that one rare feat that I've been missing since the old GTA games and Morrowind/Oblivion, the point in the endgame where it's still challenging and fun, but if you play well enough, you can avoid dying 99% of the time.
I really wish they'd make a Jedi Knight-style game using and adapting the concept. Not throwing Jedi in a sandbox, just utilizing that freedom of movement to construct a great movement system to support the kind of Jedi combat.
The way the backstory is constructed (piecing together memories) is also a pretty interesting concept and was somewhat of a unique experience, at least for me.
