Curiously enough, the romans didn't actually begin any significant use of gold coins until after conquering plenty of Celtic regions, relying on the silver Denarii instead. The Aureus began to see widespread use only during the final period of republican Rome.
And the Celtic Empire was a cultural empire. There never was a single Celtic ruler holding the leash. In fact, discounting federal government it was the antique version of USA. It is quite likely this lack of unified resistance was a major contributing factor in their lost battles against the highly-organized romans.
