Difficult though it may be to decide, my vote goes to the Warcraft series. I have spent more hours in the editor of that game then any other. Ever.

For the love of branston pickle, the Total War series has never been an RTS. It's an unholy - yet funtastic - hybrid of turn-based and real-time strategy, mmmkay? That said, my favourite series is Age of Empires, although I hated the first one. Why the bloody fuck can't my phalanx troops get past a line of trees? Damn you, AI pathfinding, daaaamn yoooou!

StarCraft is a part of the WarCraft series

Apart from having the same developer, the games are entirely different. I love Starcraft but am lukewarm on Warcraft at best. I played the first game, of course, since it was the first RTS with multiplayer, but have left WC2 and WC3 virtually alone.

Normally I'd lump C&C and Red Alert together, but choices are choices. Go Red Alert! Nothing like giant ants, time travel,war bears, and silly accents.

I love the original C&C series, i personally prefer it over the red alert series, but thats just me. C&C 3 Tiberium Wars, and the expansion "Kanes Wrath" are two of the best RTS's ive ever played (now if EA would just get off their asses and fix the online servers then we would be in business )
