Pretty much this. Ensiferum, Eluveitie, Finnroll, Turisas, et al...
This is very much correct.

I love too much metal to really be able to chose one.

Metallica
Korpliklaani
Fintroll
3 Inches of Blood
Sabaton
Turisas
Megadeth
Behemoth
Canibal Corpse
Mastadon

Yep, no way I can limit it down. My iPod has over 40gigs of music and its 90% metal, and I still want more.

It's too hard for me to decide one band but my favourite band of 2009 was Cormorant who also released my favourite album of 2009. They jokingly call themselves Tiberian Ass Bastard Folk Metal.

Recently I've been getting into Black Metal (which I'm shocked isn't an option). Bands I'm into at the moment include

Immortal
Wolves in the Throne Room
Isis
Shrinebuilder
Katatonia
Skeletonwitch
Secrets of the Moon
The Lord Weird Slough Feg/Slough Feg (they got rid of 'The Lord Weird recently)
GWAR
Cynic

First off, extremely misleading title. Seriously. "Favourite Heavy Metal Sub-Genre" would be much more appropriate. And there isn't many choices. In fact, there's Thrash Metal. How about Power Metal, Black, Death, Metalcore, Industrial, Doom, New Wave Death, Symphonic, Neoclassical, Avantgarde, Alternative, Melodic, Progressive, Technical? There are others, plus the combinations of those, like Melodic Death Metal. And, of course, New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.
What this guy said. Screamo isn't metal it is hardcore.

OT - Death/Control Denied is my favourite band/s of all time. Chuck Schuldiner is godhood In Human Form.

I know its so painful.

On Megadeth - Did you hear that thing about Jeff Young coming out saying DM is an arse?

I don't see Mayhem on that list of BM bands. They started the Norweigian BM scene.

I like other kinds of metal though. Nu metal, thrash metal, death metal, metalcore, industrial metal, black metal, etc. My top 5 metal bands are In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Children of Bodom, Rob Zombie (+ John 5, his solo work is great), and Trivium.

I did not, but it is no surprise.

On the note of Megadeth, and this thread in general, they better bring the Big Four concert stateside or I might have to cry like a little girl. It isn't a pretty sight.

The real question is why bother with subgenres. Good metal is good metal, who cares whether they scream or sing or add a trumpet?

It's a tie between Death Metal and Progressive Metal for me. I love both and an really really getting heavy into both of them. Death Metal wins it this time, only for the fact that I have had Nile stuck in my head all day and my feet are mimicking the drums now. It could have easily been Prog though, because prog is just retardedly amazing.

Listening to Between The Buried and Me now :p

I tried to find fault in your short list but could not. Perfection.

PANTERA!

They have always been my favourite band. Saw them in concert in 96 with white zombie. Very very good times.

RIP Dimebag.

Priest. Judas Priest.

They are the metal Alpha and Omega, and don't you dare forget it.

Honerable mention goes to Dragonforce, simply by virture of performing 'Through the Fire and the Flames' without dropping dead on the spot.
I thought they could not do that song live.
They did once, but the guitar's treble bar flew clean off in the process.

I can't actually choose between Electric Wizard and Godflesh.
Now there's a decision to make... It reminds me of when I met Justin Broadrick at Supersonic 2007. Awesome!

OT: I'm more into power metal, I can't choose a favourite band. If I had to I'd say Blind Guardian, maybe Helloween or possibly Manowar... Hammerfall?
