I thought it was popular then and now since it was the first Final Fantasy 3D game. My first JRPG was Pokemon Silver then I played Final Fantasy 10 later on. That was my favorite Final Fantasy game so maybe thats the reason alot of people like 7.

My first JRPG was Pokemon: Red Version. That was the first time I found out I liked the idea of being able to level my own character and create a party so I could battle the way I wanted to battle.

Many years later, I played FFX. It was my first Final Fantasy and I loved it. The characters, the combat, the story, everything was great. It wasn't till years later that I got lucky and happened to find a copy of FFVII in a GameStop not long before they stopped selling PS1 games entirely. I had heard from a few different places that it was good and I liked FFX (plus I knew that if I didn't buy it then I might never have another chance) so I decided to grab it.

To this day I still think it is one of the best JRPG's I have ever played (probably second only to Golden Sun).

My first JRPG was some game on the NES that I can't for the life of me remember the name of(wasn't a FF game though).Never really been a fan of that genre though
Chrystalis by chance? That was my first and I still have the cart for it..
Possibly. All I can really remember about it was the protagonist was a young boy and it had all the usual JRPG staples i.e random battles, turn based fighting, level grinding etc.I do remember that at some point you could acquire a magic mirror(or something along those lines)that made all enemies appear on screen so you could avoid the random encounters if you chose.Quite a neat touch I thought

FF7 pushed video games to a new level in terms of story telling. You had fully rendered 3D graphics and the battles had great effects not to mention the CGI. It broke a lot of new ground when it came to just how video games were told in a story plus the fact that it was multi-disc just blew people's minds. Seeing that huge case you knew already that you were going to be playing for a long time, one disc games were. JRPGs finally got to see how their characters interacted with their enemies in battle and the inclusion of summons and limit breaks made sure that your encounters with the simple cannon fodder were just as epic as many bosses.

It's hard to play FF7 now after seeing so much hype and how revolutionary it is blah blah blah blah. The expectations set on that game are just absolutely ridiculous so don't feel bad if you can't get into it.

It wasn't the first that I'd played (that honour goes to Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast), but FFVII is certainly the best I `have` ever played, and I say that as someone who's gone through the likes of Chrono Trigger, Suiko's I through V and all the 'Tales' games.

I'm pretty sure that the upcoming FF isn't going to change my #1. I'm not going wild for it here, having followed its development from the early days to this late stage.

As much as I love FF7, I can't say it was my first. THAT title goes to FF6 - III, back in the day when I first played it. 7 still holds up as a good game, with the Materia combos, the limitless exploration of secrets, and the shocking-for-it's-time moments. The music is a bit stuck in it's time, and the graphics are...well, I'm not even sure if I thought they were good, even back then. It still bubbles up in my top 3 FF games, along with FF Tactics and FF6.

...sometimes The Final Fantasy Legend breaks through, too.

Well, one of the games I did play well after its hay-day was the first Metal Gear Solid, and my god that game TOTALLY lived up to its hype. Seriously, it's just as amazing now as it was when it was released.

My first JRPG, like many others here, were the Pokemon games (Red, for me). I love those games, and although I don't LOVE FF7, I still consider it to be a damn good game.

By first good JRPG was Grandia.

What a grand time I had. After that, when I played FF7 it just paled in comparison. It's not even in my top 10 JRPGs. It's good, but not nearly as good as people make it out to be.
Hmmmm... I dont normally do this, but QFT.

Grandia was the one to "pop my JRPG cherry" too. That. Game. Was. Awesome! After that FF was simply too painful to play, because of the inferior battle system (RAISE THE FLAME SHIELD!!!).
FACT, not opinion, FACT: To this day the Grandia series battle system remains the best turn based battle system of all time.

FF7 was the only FF game I've ever finished. FF8 I quit about halfway through because I got stuck on a boss and FF9 I really wanted to finish but couldn't because I borrowed the disk set from a friend and the second disc had a large scratch which caused the game to stop working 15 minutes after switching over to it.

I have FF6, but I've never played it due to lack of time. I want to try it eventually, I just can't do it right now.

Nope. It was Phantasy Star II, then IV, then maybe a few others--Pokemon, for sure--and THEN Final Fantasy 7. It's in my top 15 games list, but not near the top, and I always make the note "THERE IS NO DISC 2 OR 3" because I feel that marked the point where they were just trying way, way too hard to have plot twists and "WTF" moments.

FF7 has a main character with a bigass sword. Thats all that mattered then, and its all that matters today.

The first Final Fantasy I played was nine (Which I love) and then ten (Which is my favorite of the series) then seven. I agree that it is definetley over-praised, I don't think it's nearly as good as nine or ten.

Ehh its har to say what my first JRPG was.
It wasent FF7 though.

If i remember correctly my first 3 JRPG's(cant remember which one i played first) were probably Dragon Warrior: Monsters, Mario & Luigi:SSS, or Tails of Phantasia.
All were great games.

For me Pokemon was my first JRPG and then Golden Sun. I didn't get into the FFVII craze until my friend introduced me to Crisis Core and have been a big fan since. But I have yet to beat the original FFVII that I got on the store because I can not bare to go through all the damn text, and because of this I want a remake.

Come to think of it my First RPG was Golden Sun: The lost age (...maybe)
My first Final Fantasy game that got me into the series was Final Fantasy X-2... though that one confused me(back then that is) so I'm going to scratch that and go to my second Final Fantasy game which was Final Fantasy 1&2 on the GBA, it wasn't until the hype of Advent Children did i even know about the game and at least a year after that i got to play a friends copy of VII

Golden Sun(parts 1&2) in my opinion does tower over VII as a superior game

In conclusion, no VII was not my first great RPG

It was my 3rd RPG

Phantasy Star IV
Shining Force 2
Final Fantasy VII

I think it's popular because it was one of the first games to take out the castles, caves and dungeons and make it a modern day rpg and pulled it off well. The magic system was also pretty freakin' sweet and dammit I want to play it again.

I get that it's an RPG sandbox whatever and you can create a character as you choose, but I guess I'm not egotistical enough to find that to be very exciting.
You need to be egotistical to like freedom?
To like watching you alter-ego/avatar run around doing quests that have no other depth than to show have awesome the player character is?

Hell, I like it when it's done well, in Mass Effect for example, but I still have to admit those games are basically designed for alter-ego tripping or Mary Sue wanking. Good entertainment, rarely deep story telling.

ME2 is the biggest improvement in the Bioware games thus far in that regard: much more focus on the written characters than player character, though they still quite often exist only to compliment him/her.
