Poll: FF7 is so popular because it was a lot of people's first JRPG

I really enjoyed FFVII at the time. I'm not one of the converted, though. Even at the time, I thought the translation was horrific and some of the themes were a little too... eastern for my tastes.

That's not to say it's bad. It was an incredibly impressive achievement for its time, and I think it deserves a lot of praise. I think they would need to update the translations and game mechanics to be more in keeping with modern sensibilities if they're serious about a remake, though.

To like watching you alter-ego/avatar run around doing quests that have no other depth than to show have awesome the player character is?
Unless I'm Richard Garriott now I can't think of any games this would really apply to especially not Fallout.

Yes, it was. But since then, I've played a lot more, and my recent return to FFVII still left me in awe. It's an amazing game, it truly is.

Yeah, right. It's not exactly a secret or subtle that the character is supposed to be the representation of the player in Fallout and similar games.

Say what you say, but that's obviously the experience most of these games are after.

FFIV was my first, and favorite in the series. I played FFVII second, but I liked FFX better. My favorite RPG is Shadow Hearts though.

i agree with op. it was the first final fantasy and jrpg i have ever played, and i was sucked in. though, i can still play it today and enjoy the hell out of it. alot of that is nostalgia, but i simply think the game itself is fun. i dont worry too much about translations or graphics.

It was FFIV for my first. Then I got FFVII at the same time as I did The Legend Of Dragoon, so I ignored it for almost six months before my brother convinced me to put down TLOD long enough to try it. It was pretty meh, and I quickly went back to TLOD.

I'm still looking for a version of it that isn't ridiculously overpriced or on the Bay.

What is tales of Symphonia?

If it was a JRPG I enjoyed it immensely until I got stuck and didn't want to consult a guide so traded it in. It was interesting though.

I just recognize good games for beign good, not that htey're better than another.

One of my good friends was really into FFVII but me i never played it, and at this point i dont really care to either.

However, its probably the same thing for many people as Crash Bandicoot is for me. My first 3D platformer, and i still love Crash bandicoot up untill ND stopped making them.

I get that it's an RPG sandbox whatever and you can create a character as you choose, but I guess I'm not egotistical enough to find that to be very exciting.
You need to be egotistical to like freedom?

Hell, I like it when it's done well, in Mass Effect for example, but I still have to admit those games are basically designed for alter-ego tripping or Mary Sue wanking. Good entertainment, rarely deep story telling.

ME2 is the biggest improvement in the Bioware games thus far in that regard: much more focus on the written characters than player character, though they still quite often exist only to compliment him/her.
Why are you so opposed to the idea of fun?

If i remember correctly my first 3 JRPG's(cant remember which one i played first) were probably Dragon Warrior: Monsters, Mario & Luigi:SSS, or Tails of Phantasia. All were great games.
Hey Giga! Looks like you came into the game fairly late. ;)
I know.
Im sad because of the games iv missed but, iv played plenty.
And i loved almost all of them.

Interesting theory. FFVII was my first game with a deep, serious plot. Everything before that had been NES and Sega Genesis, and I was too young to really appreciate the stories in those games. I was probably around 10 when I played FFVII, so the plot didn't have to work hard to impress me. And I was very impressed. Now perhaps I'm a victim of nostalgia. But if I had encountered something better, why wouldn't I have appreciated it as much as FFVII? I went into FFVIII expecting it to be as good as the previous installment and was highly disappointed. Who's to say that VII didn't just speak to me and my own experiences and personality than VIII?

I still think that FFVII is a game that is not for everyone. Its popularity baffles people who don't like it, but FFX's popularity baffles me. Not to mention the popularity of many music genres and periods. Also, mushrooms are gross.

Dragon Warrior was my first JRPG. It took me a weekend to beat. I did not have a guide book, nor did I have a Nintendo Power that told me where to go. I did it the hard way.

My first JRPG was either Secret of Mana or Mystic Quest Legend, so FFVII wasn't my first.

That's not to say it wasn't a good game. I did enjoy it, but I can't say it's my favourite. There's quite a few JRPGs I rate above it, including FF XIII and IX.
