Da hell? I'm not 12 years old. Don't go bringing that shit into this thread, I was there when the game was new.

Like most other people, FF7 wasn't my first RPG, or final fantasy. I downloaded it off the PSN so I could have it on my Psp, after hearing the hype from my friend Dale, who;s a huge fan of the series, proclaiming it was his favorite of the series, with 8 at a close second. I went into FF7 not expecting anything outragous, but in the end, I thought it was probably the best in the series.
For all you TL;DNR, the very few out there, I got FF7 not thinking it would be special, and now I love it.

I think it was my first RPG all together. I played it when I was 7 and well.. .it was a game with cool bad assed characters with big swords and machine gun arms. The sound track was just brilliant and well the story went a little over my head at that age it did have characters I generally cared about. I mostly watched my dad play it because I wasn't all that good at it at that age but it was cool none the less. My dad even named Cid after me. So for a 7 year old that game was the shit... today well it still as a lot of nostalgia there for me. I have yet to play a video game with a better more atmospheric sound track.

My 1st good JRPG was Pokémon Blue. Still can't find a flaw with it.

My 1st Final Fantasy however was actually VIII. I lack the nostalgia for Final Fantasy VII.

I don't think it deserves as much hype as it gets. It's a good game, but earning the title of best game ever by many is going too far. Anyone who believes that truly is clouded by nostalgia.
I liked the battle system. Materia allowed for some good customization in tactics and didn't restrict the players to classes, and the storyline had a good futuristic sci-fi fantasy setting with definite memorable characters. I do believe there are better games though.

I'm surprised there's been so few JRPG hate posts in this thread. You'd think this close to Yahtzee it would be inevitable.

It isn't the greatest but I do love it.

My first JRPG was Dragon Warrior, my second Final Fantasy, and my third Ultima: Runes of Virtue... all on the NES.

I think the FFVII love comes from the fact that it revolutionized the genre and brought it into 3D. I believe its the same as why people love Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Super Mario 64. Neither are the greatest of the genre but added to it the element of 3D graphics.

Dragon Warrior was my first JRPG. It took me a weekend to beat. I did not have a guide book, nor did I have a Nintendo Power that told me where to go. I did it the hard way.
Oh the grind in that game...
Trying to collect enough gold for a flame sword... painful!

On subsequent playthroughs I ignored the Flame Sword and went straight for Erdrick's Sword. What with my ability to navigate the Dragon Lords castle without a torch, it was a cinch.
After the first time I beat it, I went straight for Eldrick's Armor on subsequent playthroughs. I never had a problem with gold because I killed a ton of Gold Golems.

FFVII actually was my first JRPG, I was only 9 or so in 1997 when it first came out. To this day it's still one of my favourite JRPGs. There are better ones out there, like the Grandia series. But FFVII will always have a special place in my heart.

I was 8 when FFVII was released and besides the incredibly old retro Amiga type games it was the first game I really sat down with on my own.
So yes it was my first big JRPG, but it was the birth of my love for video games full stop.
I adore FFVII for the same reasons many people do. I love the characters, the plot, the places. I don't give a shit about graphics when it comes to a game so that never bothered me and I'll happily still sit down and play it over any next gen game going.
I know a lot of people don't feel the same though - and that's fine that's your opinion which I'll never crap all over because everyone loves different things for different reasons.

I think people liked it because the story was more original back then. Elder Scrolls 2 was considered revolutionary back when it first came out. It offered a huge amount of freedom in character creation; something not done before it to the degree it had. Nowadays, it isn't so innovative, but it was back then.

Wasn't FF7 one of the first games to kill off one of the main characters or something?

According to your profile, you were about 7 when the game came out. How old are you implying you were when you started playing video games? Three?

IX, which remains probably my favourite.

VIII, which I love to death, and the characters... well, see my chosen avatar.

VII, played it last (not counting VI, which I hated, V, which I got very bored of, and IV, which I marely started before giving up on).

I remember thinking that I could see exactly why people would love FFVII, and I did enjoy it a lot, liked the story, liked the character, liked most of the pacing, the action, the cutscenes; all that yadda. It wasn't my favourite, and it wasn't my first, but interestingly, if I had been told to choose one to remake, or add sequels to, back then (before they actually got made), I would still have said VII was the best of the bunch.

IX and VIII were utterly self contained, and VIII's ending was still just a little too 'wuh?' for me to really stomach, but VII had (and still has) the best and most expandable story of them all. So much was open to interpretation, so much was done right, that I think the real reason people dislike it (to turn your question around) is simply down to hype backlash, because nothing can ever live up to the hype.

Undoubtedly, the game is not as good as advertised, but that doesn't make it bad, it just makes it shallower than you expect, which tends to leave people feeling like they've been ripped off, hence, apparently, hatred. Hype leads to expectations, expectations lead to disappointment, disappointment, leads to Hate...

Wait just one good gorram minute, why do people hate this game so much? (Please don't answer this, I include it for purposes of amusement only.)

Not everyone plays a game when it was new you know. Young kids play the game because its popular, and they grow up with it, continuing the force that pushed this game into cult following.

This is precisely why I love Final Fantasy VII so much. It was the first JRPG I played, and indeed, the first largely story-driven game I played too. I have very fond memories of playing it for hours when I was a lad. I've also been a Final Fantasy fan ever since, and played through all the numbered titles, bar Final Fantasy XI. Now I'm eagerly awaiting my Final Fantasy XIII special edition arriving at my door in three weeks.

If one were to ask me, in my opinion, what the best Final Fantasy game is, I'd probably be torn between IV, VI and IX. I love them all, of course. I'm not going to claim that Final Fantasy VII is the best, but it's probably my favourite because it was the first one I played.

I think Secret of Mana may have been my first JRPG, if it would be classed as such.

It is unconscionable to me that, more than a decade after the fact, there are still people that get some kind of pathetic gratification voicing their resentment of Final Fantasy VII because of some kind of massive injustice inflicted upon them by its popularity.

Drop it. No one has cared for years. Yes, the game was more popular than food when it was released, both with genre regulars, inductees, and new gamers alike. Yes, it brought a lot of new blood into the genre, and a lot of people's opinions of it are colored by that fact. No, none of that matters even the tiniest little bit, and hasn't for two entire generations!

It's been thirteen years! More than half the lives of many of the people on this forum! It no longer matters if you loved this game or hated it! The fact that people still spiritedly debate the merits of this game invalidates any argument of its detractors! And the fact that the rest of us are still having to hear about ten years after anyone in the world has given a corny shit invalidates any argument of its supporters!

I loved this game more than life back in the day- when I was nine years old! It wasn't my first RPG by a long shot, nor was it the last by an even longer shot, and I still love it! I still own it, and my old saves, and my strategy guide, and I would burn a bus full of screaming children to death if it meant never having to hear it mentioned ever again!

Since I am absolutely just sick to death of this, here's some other topics for you: The Half Life series is only popular because its fans are massively insecure. Mario is an allegory for an agnostic's daily existential struggle. Pokemon causes cancer in lab rats. Marcus Fenix is a metaphor for Jesus, and Dom is the Holy Spirit. Even other Final Fantasies will do! Fans of FFVI make effortless trolling targets! FFVIII fans? They're like nitro for flame wars! Anything else! Anything at all!
