So, it is beginning to look like Square-Enix is planning a remake of FF7.
So, Escapists- I ask you:
Hypothetically, If the remake was to be made, how many changes would you want there to be to the script?

Feel free to expand on your choices below.

Your information is off. They're just fixing up the PC port so that it works with Windows 7 and offering it through digital distribution. They're tossing in achievements and cloud (HAHA WE GET IT SQUARE) saves, but the game itself is untouched.

I'm going to go with: I don't want it remade any time soon.

Yeah, Square just specifically said they're not remaking it. They couldn't do it if they wanted to--apparently, making a game like that today would require too much work, too much time and too much money to be practical. I can believe that; look at how long it took them just to make Final Hallway XIII.

I don't understand why so many people are so desperate to see that game remade, anyway. No one would be happy if they left it exactly the same ("we've seen this before!") and no one would be happy if they changed anything at all ("RUINED FOREVAR!!1!"). In the end, we'd just have a shinier version of a fifteen-year-old game that most people have long since memorized, when Square could've been coming up with something new.

Yeah I agree with you. I would just want some graphical improvements, more importantly the environmental graphics update, but leave everything else the same.

Just change to character models to look more like FFVIII models instead of bad minecraft skins.

leave everything else, even the bad translations.

I don't want any changes, I just want to play the thing on my computer without glitches. My old copy of the PC version is finicky as hell, so just do a modern version of that. Keep the wonderfully blocky characters, the goofy sound effects, everything. Just make the game work.

Also, in the spirit of changes, why did Square suddenly decide that Aeris was Aerith? (and by suddenly I mean years ago, but I just never understood why they decided Aerith was better)

IDK, I never played the game, but since it isn't a remake, just a re-release I think they should have the same backgrounds but with High Resolution images instead, since I figure they are going to look fairly badly compressed by today's standards, in fact just that, don't make the game badly compressed and possibly fix the translation errors like they did with FFIV, FFVI and Chrono Trigger when they re-released them for the PS1.

Id rather they leave the fuckin' game alone. Yes, it was a great game when it came out to most people. It's still one of the best FF games to date. But it came out a decade and a half ago. Short of extra money for Squaresoft (Shut up, I don't care), there is no reason to even touch the game ever again.

I always assumed that Square got a new CEO with a severe lisp, and they changed it so that it wouldn't offend him...

Apparently 'Aerith' is supposed to sound like 'Earth', because she's an Ancient, and has a connection to the Planet and all that. It doesn't really sound that similar anyway, they're both fine.
OT: I'd like the same thing basically, so long as the characters don't look like puppets with tumours for heads. Updated music, too.

Why do people want the game remaking? Surely if the game is good then it should be able to stand on the merits it was originally released with. If anything could be done to it, it would just have to be an updated translation.

The problem is, if Final Fantasy VII gets remade, it will be panned by fans, no matter how it is remade. It will be crushed under the weight of expectations.

While the game is fun to play nowadays, the visuals haven't aged well and the style of the game was pretty complex for the playstation, they got away with a lot of shit. Think about it, a full remake would have to completely axe the Honeybee inn scenes and the stuff involving Don Corneo, also, the funny date with Barret would be axed because Christians would scream over the implied homosexuality.

A remake will fail, It will be welcomed by some, the ones who cling to nostalgia will completely and relentlessly bash it (not to mention a bajillion threads here on how the remake sucks balls because I don't like it waaah)
You beat me to it, everyone wants something different; voices/no voices etc. I would love lots a changes but as Tizzy said square can't make everyone happy.

I never played the original so I would like an option to have either updated graphics or old graphics, I would also like fixed glitches but no changes to gameplay, because changes to gameplay would result in huge amounts of fan-raging.

Noooo, they are planning to re-release it on PC. Not remake, re-release. Same old game, same old graphics, same old everything. Just able to run on modern operating systems.

If you change it, then it's not FF7 anymore, is it? Do you want to have another Goldeneye Reloaded situation?

Aside from the graphics.....nothing.

The story and all of its quirky contents are what made it so good and beloved.
