Yes but multiplayer or epic story is going to win out in the end. Yes track editor adds a lot to the game, and so does 16 player multiplayer but comparing a what GT's multiplayer base is probably going to be compared to that of a COD game, it doesn't look good for GT. And career modes are just ways to get us to play by ourselves to the point where we got the cars we want, and they just really aren't that engrossing compared to the story centric games like Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age or Fallout New Vegas.
I'm confused, how exactly do things not look good for GT? It's Sony's biggest franchise, boasting the biggest car database in the history of car games...hell, any game, ultra-realistic track detail, track editor, ever evolving online component that boasts the highest amount of players per track in a console racer, most of the greatest race tracks the world has ever seen, etc.. etc.. etc... And how exactly does epic story win out? MW 1 and MW 2, qualify as epic story? Really? Ok, I guess your definition of epic and mine, differ vastly. What the masses buy in droves, doesn't always denote greatness. People liked N'Sync once. Remember that.
Plus, who's to say every game has to have a story. It's entertainment, last I checked, there's no set formula or mold that defines what entertainment actually is between one person and another. I don't need Polyphony Digital to 'get me to play by myself', I can do that without any prompting when it comes to that game. And, if the people who're over at the time, aren't interested, they can seriously go get bent. I didn't buy it to entertain them. I bought it to entertain me. Fortunately, that's not an issue as every immediate friend I have is salivating at the chance to play it.
And finally, if Mass Effect is your 'bar' for success in a story driven game, be aware, alone neither ME 1 nor ME 2 has outsold even Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (The demo, as some like to call it), and almost both combined (4.17m to 3.83m), of course nobody tracks PSN sales (other than Sony), and since GT5p's been available for download since it launched, it's entirely possible it's sold more than vgchartz reports (and likely). Dragon Age? Combine both 360/PS3 versions + their DLC content, and they still don't even get to 3m units shipped (2.92). Then there's Fallout, which is a bit different and I can't smash a hole in that one quite as easily, unles...of course we look at a full release for Gran Turismo. We'll be fare and use GT4 (10.55m vs 5.75m), that's including both PS3/360 versions, and their DLC.
The point isn't who sold more, it's who wants what, more. ME 1+2, Fallout, and Dragon Age seem to come up about 5 million interested folks short, when compared to Gran Turismo.
