On one hand they're the reason why my local Game Crazy went out of business (Which feels like so long ago), and of course after they took over Funcoland and EB the prices on everything went up and all of a sudden we had two or three locations in one city, including two in a mall by where I work.
But at the same time they also do neat little things like pre-order bonuses (And a few times, or many I can walk in and ask for demos/old pre-order codes and other goodies they no longer need yet could cost $2-10 as DLC later) and midnight release parties. Also it seems like the stores are constantly getting bigger and evolving in ways, which can be a good thing, frankly they're ok just for the preorder part.

However for cheap used games and games on out dated consoles I have other places to go...Places loads better. Honestly, I can't really hate them or love them either.

I have no problem with them. The pre-order crap is more due to the publishers, prices are the same as anyone else for new games and used games are a matter of what the market is willing to pay and if you don't like the prices you may always look elsewhere to see if you can find a better deal. So really I don't see any reason to "hate" the company.

I do, thankfully there will always be other places like amazon and best buy =).
Doesn't Amazon just allow individuals to price and sell things on their own?

I don't really mind that much. I have never had a problem with them and since I only get my PC games from Steam...well I have no reason to hate them. And generally I don't have bad service with them. Their service is better then most places I would normally shop/eat at anyways. I mean, they can't be perfect right?

I don't really know gamestop, but we have Electronic's Boutique who are owned by gamestop.
Their prices are just retardedly high.
I know more in my pinky than the entire staff do about videogames.
The preowned prices are laughable, they rip people off severely in trade-ins, the music they play is fucking awful, and they monopolise all the good collector's editions, and don't let any other stores acquire them.
They're always hiring people who can barely speak english over me (when i've applied for a job in the past).
They just want yes men and they are a bunch of goddamned morons.
If gamestop are anything like their sister company EB, then yes I freaking hate gamestop! >.<

Aso, that lame "EDGE" card? Frigging thing used to be free, now it's like $15 unless you make a purchase over $100.
Gametraders give out their discount card for free!
Fuck EB! that Rhymed xD

Yeah... no It's EB, trust me, it was factored into the cost somewhere.
They do anything they can to screw over customers, and their customer service is shite.

Is there a UK equivalent to GameStop? I need to get a handle on what I'm supposed to be hating.
I'm pretty sure GAME or Gamestation is the UK equivalent.
nope.
Game and Gamestop used to be parent companies, but now they have split off. they're in direct competition now and i have to say Game is far superiour in every way.
Also, FYI, GAME used to be Gameswizards.

I've had people try to defend gamestop to me. Despite me telling my story of them trying to sell my friend and me a used PS3 for the new price of 599USD+tax. How did we know it was used? Rubber bands on wires, the layer of dust, lack of bags. "that's how it comes" the manager said.

Not the first problem or last I've had there.
Sounds like you have a bad apple there locally. On average Gamestop is just another store. I use 2 here locally where I live that have never given me any problems besides the normal upsell pressure every store tries and the staff have been always been pleasant and knowledgeable. I realize my experiences are not necessarily the norm but you also have to remember that the voices of pissed off customers have a much greater volume than the rest.

My Gamestop (EB Games) is great! They are very friendly, knowledgeable, and I go there for my pre-orders! In fact, I recently pre-ordered the SE of Marvel vs Capcom 3! It comes with console decals...

I've never been to a good gamestop, the employees rarely know what they're talking about, another tried to use my money to preorder a game that I didn't want and said no to. Another one wouldn't let me return the game because they said I used a different card ( I didn't because I only have one).

Even out of state it was a joke. The employees didn't know what component cables were, though they had them right behind them, told me they weren't right. Got into an argument over it.

Seriously, if you've been to a good gamestop, I'd say you've found the only good apple.

Hm.
Well I haven't been scammed.
I haven't bought a bad product from 'em.
I save money thanks to their edge card.
And I've found both the original Burnout and Burnout 2 and bought them both for a total of $20...
I think I enjoy my local gamestop...

Why the shit does everyone hate them so much?

They're just another company trying to make money, but nooo we can't have that can we?

Maybe its different in America or something, (after all its called EB Games over here) but over here its where myself and everyone I know gets their games.

I don't. But I haven't been to the one for a while because the last guy who I bought my game from ( it was New Vegas) really made me uncomfortable. But I don't really hate them. I get that they have questionable buisness practices, but they've never been too bad to me.
