I've had people try to defend gamestop to me. Despite me telling my story of them trying to sell my friend and me a used PS3 for the new price of 599USD+tax. How did we know it was used? Rubber bands on wires, the layer of dust, lack of bags. "that's how it comes" the manager said.

Not the first problem or last I've had there.
Sounds like you have a bad apple there locally. On average Gamestop is just another store. I use 2 here locally where I live that have never given me any problems besides the normal upsell pressure every store tries and the staff have been always been pleasant and knowledgeable. I realize my experiences are not necessarily the norm but you also have to remember that the voices of pissed off customers have a much greater volume than the rest.
I've never been to a good gamestop, the employees rarely know what they're talking about, another tried to use my money to preorder a game that I didn't want and said no to. Another one wouldn't let me return the game because they said I used a different card ( I didn't because I only have one).

Even out of state it was a joke. The employees didn't know what component cables were, though they had them right behind them, told me they weren't right. Got into an argument over it.

Seriously, if you've been to a good gamestop, I'd say you've found the only good apple.
Evidently I am as gifted at finding good ones as you are at finding the worst as I have been to several good stores. Maybe it is the area in which you live?
As I said, I've been out of state and they're still bad. I dunno my luck is usually bad as I hear. I say xbox 360 has the worst online community ever, I'd say 4% of the games I played had decent people in them. My friend tells me he rarely sees that kind of stuff so, yeah that should paint a picture for ya.

I often check their used games section, but I get recent full-priced games at Future Shop since they usually sell cheaper.

They're not as bad as Game Buzz, though. I saw Ratchet & Clank Future: TOD for 59.99$ there last week. It's like 25 everywhere else. And FF VII for 250 bucks. :\

It seems that my local Gamestops is one of the best. I asked one of the people if I should get Fallout 3($30) or Bioshock 2($60), and they recomended Fallout 3. The only problem I have with them is, no bonuses for going to the midnight release of a game. I went to the New Vegas release, and a few weeks later they lowered the price of the collector's edition.

I tend to avoid our local GameStop after they tried to con us out of a 100$ but I don't really have a problem with them in general. I sell my games online though, and mostly buy through Steam.

I wouldn't say I hate it... I just never shop there.
Their prices are laughable, especially for Wii games. An ancient 1st party game like Mario Galaxy still goes for the release day price there, it just NEVER drops... that's fuckin ridiculous. Even the used copies cost like $70* (Still speaking of Mario Galaxy) =/

Overall their prices are 30-100% higher on release day than the online shop I've been using for the last 6 years.

Nowadays I only go there to browse for games to get online or to pick up the latest copy of a free video game magazine (Game Reactor).

*Sounds like too much? Consider that I live in Sweden and a new Wii game is like 700 Swedish Kronor which equals about $100USD at current rates.

I've said it several times, I've been to several gamestops who's service runs from abysmal to bad. And yes I WILL blame a corporation when I can't find a single shop that does things as unprofessionally as them. I'm just saying one crappy store in one crappy neighborhood, I mean several stores that are here, are there, have come and gone. If you've been to a good gamestop, at this point I'm willing to call yours the rare good one than the rare bad one.

The bad:
-Giving games without the discs
-Buying used systems and not getting controller.
-Not getting the controller when I return despite never getting one
-Selling new games that look like they've experienced a belt sanding
-Not knowing what they're selling

The Abysmal:
-selling a Used PS3 as new (599USD +tax) REFUSING a return untill an hour of arguing.
-Using my money to preorder games that I said no to.
-Losing one of the games I was trading in and (though it was scanned) refused to give me credit.

I've been to at least 10 in my state, and 2 in NJ 2 in Massachusetts and 1 in San Francisco.
The best one I was in was in the mall, because the staff were too lazy to even ask me if I needed help...at the counter.

Here's why I hate Gamestop:

Me: "Do you have game X?"
Gamestop Employee: "Did you preorder it?"
Me: "No."
Gamestop Employee: "Groan (rolls eyes) sigh... let me check."

Gamestop employee returns moments later with the game I asked for.

I have never, ever, walked into a Gamestop on release day and not walked out with a copy of the game even though I didn't preorder. (I'm primarily a PC gamer so this may be why). And yet, 100% of the time I go there, this is the reaction I get. Look asshole, if by some chance you don't have the game you can gloat all you want, but otherwise save me your bullshit.

I adore gamestop. I mean I can get better things online but you always can... well most of the time. I spend a ton at gamestop. /shrug They have never screwed me over and always try to help whenever I need it. My biggest complaint was when I tried to bring my system in and they needed some cord. Couldn't return it without. /sigh That and returning games NEVER makes any form of profit. But just to buy, never had any problems.
