I honestly prefer cannon endings, I'm starting to despite games with "multiple endings" just because way too many throw in a stupid morality system or just out of no where throw you a random final decision which either makes you a saint or a devil. Especially in games with an actual narrative they should just give you an ending and not crowbar in some good, moderate, or evil ending.

But back to the OT, I go for the best one. Especially in some of the darker games, where a bit of levity would be appreciated.

(Ok I'll be honest, I haven't a clue how to embed YouTube videos)
Thank you, not only for pointing out a pet peeve of mine, but for also showing me that David Mitchell has a YouTube channel where he rants about things. You get two gold stars, and in return I'll show you how to embed videos. Behold!

Quote my post and it'll show you the code used. The bit you put in after 'youtube=' is the part after the = sign in the YouTube URL.

Now, OT:

Rarely having time to do multiple playthroughs of games, I usually only see one ending. But, I think it's a good thing for different players to have different experiences, it increases the discussion value and 'personalises' the game to an extent. But at the same time, from a narrative perspective, it doesn't really make sense to have multiple 'proper endings' i.e. ones that aren't just a non-standard game over, if only one of them is the story you actually wanted to tell. In short, I couldn't care less.

A good example is the first Deus Ex with the three different endings based on different actions in area 51 and somehow all three endings made it in the storyline of the second game to great effect.

btw Deus ex Human Revolution has the laziest endings in the history of mankind.

I like whatever ending I think fits best into the game. For example, the "In Water" ending of Silent Hill 2 was by far the saddest of all the endings. I liked this one th best though because it just seemed to fit James's character, and the game far better than the rest.

This topic isn't quite about what I thought it would be. I could generally care less about 'canon', as all the games I'm invested in are standalone, or the protagonists are unrelated, a-la Bioshock or Silent Hill.

The one time I got caught up in the mass of Canon endings was Tekken. You know one of the 3 Mishimas one each of the tournaments, but decifering which Mishima got a bit hairy by the 4th or 5th game.

Somewhat off-topic, but what I intended to post in the thread I thought this would be:
I tend to dislike more than 2 multiple endings. Unless I like a game, I won't beat it more than once. I'd have to really like it to beat it more than twice. So if a game has 7 different endings, I can hardly be troubled to youtube them, let alone beat the game legitimately. I also get a chuckle out of these games that forbid saving near the end (FARCRY3) because they feel themselves above allowing you to reload and watch the other ending right afterwards.

My first time through, I go for the ending that makes the most sense for how I played and the choices that my character made, or simply what I feel in the moment

Anything further, im playing through to see the other ending(s)

I go with what ending feels "right" under the circumstances, I don't care if that works out better or worse for the character.
Example

Dragon Age: My warden wouldn't want to die, thus they choose to do the ritual with Morrigan thus saving his life.

on the other side of the coin

I believed that Captain Walker deserved to die in the end, so I let "Konrad" shoot him. (Though this is without going into the mindfuckery that is the possibility he actually died in the helicopter crash)

the "Good and evil" morality system of multiple endings is bullshit. On the other hand I really like games that do multiple endings correctly. Chrono Trigger and the Silent Hill series being prime examples.

Isn't the idea for a lot of games with multiple conclusions that canon is up to the individual player?
That said, I try to aim for a positive ending on my first run-through, but it really depends on the context.

I usually just take the ending that I've been given. But if there is a reward for getting a certain ending, like Silent Hill 2, then I'll go for it after the first playthrough.

I usually get very close to the golden ending on my own, though. Like, the only thing that went wrong on the Suicide Mission was that Tali got shot in the head, and I shot Menendez when you weren't supposed to in BO2.
In BO2 I went for the kill as well. I knew as my thumb slowly depressed the spacebar that I'd just fucked things up more than I could imagine (and I did) but god damn, I was not prepared to kill Harper. I probably wouldn't have felt so bad if his face had been mangled in the Pakistan mission though.
I also lost Mordin in the suicide mission because I took Garrus with me to the boss fight when I should have had him holding the line. Garrus had my fucking back from the start though, how could I not fight by his side for what could well have been the final showdown.

I think the adequacy or inadequacy of multiple endings in video games is a valid subject but it's also a question I've heard a little too many times (especially after ME3's outing) and so I figured I might as well try be a little more original than that and ask what KIND of an ending people go for, all choices considered.

It's also interesting you should mention Silent Hill, where practically every game is very much related. Origins is a direct pequel to SH1 and SH3 is its direct sequel, meaning the endings of Origins and SH1 are either canon or not. Same goes with SH3 - by Homecoming The Order is mostly defunct thanks to Douglas's intervention, meaning SH3's 'good' ending is the canonical one (we also see Travis, who evidently survived Origins). SH2 and SH4, though mostly stand-alone, are also very much related through Walter and the Sunderlands.

Silent Hill 3 was the last one I put any real stock into. /hipster

I recall even when it came out being upset that they took the easy route of a sequel rather than standalone. Perhaps it wasn't all that bad an idea, as all the other stand alones have been mediocre, but despite Yahtzee's views (which I tend to share) people seem to be greatly varied on appreciation for the different games. I had a friend who thought Origins was the living end, whereas I struggled to beat it once without breaking my psp in frustration at the plot.

I make my decisions and I live with them.

Or in the case of Mass Effect 3 I make my decisions and then they all get retconned anyway and none of them matter by the end of the game.

I go for the canon ending, when that isn`t an option (aka any ending matters), then I stick with whatever choices I make and see what will come out of it. IF I enjoyed the game A LOT, it`s not too long, and I have the spare time, I might go for the other endings out of curiosity.

I go with the ending I get. Usually that involves whatever ending has you being digital Jesus and helping all the people. On replaying I'll look to see the different ones and try to get one I like.

Depends on the game itself.

if the game has widely different endings and not that mass effect 3 type stuff,
i tend to play the game multiple times each time aiming for a specific ending usually starting from the best to the worst.

but if the game only has one real ending and other variations that are just the same with a pallet swap i do what ever i feel like at the moment and see what happens.

For the most part i try to get all the endings even the bad ones and usually that just means going back to a second save i made. right now though I'm playing Zero Escape: Virtues last reward and the whole point of that game is to get all the endings as it's the only way to unlock the true ending. it's the follow up to 9 hours, 9 persons, 9 doors that has a similar thing but with only 8 endings while this one has 24 including more than a few where you die in different ways. anyone who loves getting all the endings would likely love both these games and the second one has a great system that lets you jump back to any decision you made and redo it so that you don't have to restart all the time or juggle a whole ton of saves.
