Depends; As long as they implement it right and don't just pull a 'stereotype' at the sacrifice of character development, and actual characterization...sure i'm fine with a Homosexual lead character.

it would be gimmicky. why would there be a reason to point out a character's sexuality at all?
Believe it or not, a character's sexuality comes up a LOT. You probably just don't realise it because you consider it the norm. Here are some games that point out the sexuality of the main charcter(s)constantly throughout and make it the focus of their characterisation:

Mario games
Zelda series
Gears of War 2
Bayonetta
Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10, etc
Uncharted
Kingdom Hearts
Max Payne
God of War
Heavy Rain

Just because they're straight doesn't mean that any of the romance/character relations involved doesn't count as "sexuality". So yeah, character sexuality is pointed out A LOT. I say it's time for some to be gay relationships.

there are very, very few gay players compared to straight players, and catering to a boutique audiance is not a good idea financially. however, i would play if, either: its not in your face about it. im uncomfortable if there is even a make out scene between two guys. or: the main character is ridiculously flaming. like... a comedy action game or something. be legit.

Alternatively, a game with a hot lesbian lead.... hey... im a guy.

Gay players have had to deal with their orientation being sidelined in all media since forever. I think it's frankly insulting to heterosexual people to imply that they'd not buy a game because it had a gay main character. The implication that they're so bigoted and easily offended that the gay characters have to be kept out of the road and optional so as not to offend their dainty sensibilities doesn't do anybody any favours, to be blunt.
Well, it's because a large majority of heterosexuals are offended by the fact that people are gay, when it doesn't even affect them. Look at the controversy surrounding gay marriage, and that's in the real world where we have a much bigger demographic than solely those who play video games. I'm sure it'll change - it is already - but the baby boomers are still around, and most of them so fucking narrow-minded.

OT: I can think of an example in video games where the character is subtly gay: Bayonetta.

Before you guys start going, "No she's not, she's totally boning that guy with the Doctor Who scarf! And she's a stereotypical female character, HOW CAN SHE BE GAY!?", go back and look at nearly every scene that she's in with Jeanne, and then tell me there's not a lot of chemistry between them. Then again, everything in Bayonetta is overblown, so...

I don't really care as long as the storyline is good and the game is fun tbh.

(Gay Tony from GTA:BoGT was good)
OH MY GOD.

When I played BoGT, I kept saying, "This is how a gay person acts. They act like a normal person, but with a different orientation. Their lives and their likes are a bit different." I think Gay Tony is the best GTA character because, lets face it, he breaks down the stereotypes.

I voted for the poll being not very good.

To me, the poll options should have been Yes, No, and Doesn't Matter to Me.

In which case, I would choose the third. I don't care about the sexual orientation of my character. Most games don't play on sexuality a whole lot anyway, so I don't see why it'd be a big deal.

Sure. I think it would be really good, done right.

I'd like to see a mainstream AAA developer dare to do this. They would forever earn my respect.

Simple answer to this question; while homosexuals represent a significant minority in all societies, there is undoubtedly still a controversy about them that makes it unwise for a game developer to ask a wide audience to step into a homosexual's shoes- and in the case of a man saving his man, adopt a goal that denies the player any chance of ignoring the protagonist's sexuality.

I think the fact that homosexuality is still "controversial" is a sick statement about just how little progress we've made as a race. Nevertheless, this argument (as to why a developer aiming to keep its head above water should stick to strong heterosexual men and scantily clad, bottomly buxom lasses) stands.

I fully support Bioware efforts in games like Dragon Age Origins. A homosexual *option* is the ideal way of getting homosexuals represented.

Edit: Change for woman/her in the case of gay women. Omitted because it reads better, not because I'm sexist. Frankly, son(s), I am disappoint. I know this arse-covering was necessary, and that a sad panda makes.

As long as they do it for story/character reasons, and not for the controversy of having a gay character, i wouldn't really give a shit.

I don't see any reason why the main character couldn't be gay, hell I'm sure a Lesbian main character would probably be quite popular.

Dragon Age allows you to have gay relationships which is fine because you can choose not to but forcing a gay relationship on everyone will be less enjoyable for the majority of players.
It really depends upon how it is done.

Most games that have anything to do with characters touch upon sexuality to varying degrees of maturity and clarity, it depends what you count. Do you for example count the suggested relationship between Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance? We have an idea that Alyx has feelings for Gordon but we have no actual conformation as to whether this is correct or if the suspected feelings are returned.
We also have the likes of the GTA series where relationships just about equate to ingame bonuses.

So as far as I am aware there aren't that many games that have sexuality that is depicted in a way that is mature or particularly clear.

As long as he doesn't drop into the stupid camp gay guy stereotype, it'd be a nice change.

Not really, in the same way i don't wanna see more heterosexual main characters, since the gameplay hardly ever focuses on romance/sexual attraction, the characters sexual preference really doesn't matter in most games i play, and i would prefer, that it didn't become trendy, to inculde dating-sim elements in games.
If/when they include them anyways, i really couldn't care less whether the main character liked girls or guys.

Isn't there already 2 army of two games out btw?

If it's just part of the plot for the game like "Mario must rescue his belowed princess peach" and deson't affect gameplay, i don't mind the fact that the character is motivated by that kind of stuff, and it wouldn't really change the game if he had to save some dude he had a crush on instead.
I liekd No more heroes, and it was kinda fitting, how travis was trying to get laid by that chick, but it was all in teh story/cutscenes, and didn't affect gameplay, so if he had been trying to get with some dude instead it still wouldn't have changed anything.

Long story short, i prefer the sexuallity of the game hcaractrs to have as little impact on teh game as possible, cause otehrwise i'd be playing dating sims instead, so it won't make any difference if teh protagonist (or any other character) is gay or straight.

Sure, why the hell not? I do not have anything against gays, and that would be a nice break from the formula. But of course, the main requirement is...

Meh...Probably not; Well, at least that being a major focus of the game anyhow. Since homosexual culture is still a rather...um...I suppose an "uncomfortable" status to accept for a majority, a game the depends heavily on the story featuring such characters might be scorned emotionally (and financially) out of the door.

If it's NOT part of the story, there's no point to even list such character as "gay" or "straight" in the first place (Unless I guess you're in for the cheap jokes); Animation mostly can be interpreted in anyway you want. Maybe Link after all "swings the other way" while his business with Princess Zelda is just professional...
