Hot topic for me here in small-town midwest Iowa. If you ask me the whole premise on the banning was religious views with just other crap that opposers made up when religious excuses didn't work anymore.

It all comes down to just old views getting in the way of progress. Civil rights groups had to overcome great hardships to get the rights they deserved and I hope that America as a whole can just give gay couples their rights and not waste time taking so long like they did back then.

if people limit other peoples rights based simply on the fact that they love the same sex, and use the bible or religion as the foundation of their argument, they deserve to be faced with the same discrimination they would force on said person.

i've had many gay and lesbian friends, and i've even been hit on by a couple guys, but what is so wrong about same sex marriage?

if you can answer that question without using anything related to religion, your point would either just be discriminatory, or outright ignorant.

Meh, they want it for the tax-breaks. But whatever, who am I to say who should "get married" anyways. Its just a piece of paper.

Only thing I feel like saying to be honest is "The Fall of Rome."
The fall of Rome?

OT:
It should be legal.
After all, you do pride yourselves in being the land of the free...

I think marriage and sexual preferences are a personal choice and the government of a free country shouldn't be able to meddle in somthing that is our civil rights. NO ONE has the right to tell somone who they should and shouldn't be attracted too, especially not an establishment that should be worried about much bigger things.
It really is refreshing to have so many people like you posting your opinions- and finding you AGREE.

Living where I do most of the people see me as some kind of weirdo for supporting gay rights.
Texas? Yeah I know where your coming from, my parents both grew up there and my uncle was gay, after he came out my family(not us mind you) basically shunned him. Thats mainly why I feel so strongly about the subject.

I would actually be interested in hearing a non-religious reason against gay marriage. All I ever hear are the same biblical verses and standards. It would be truly refreshing to hear a well thought out logical argument as to why I'm wrong. I doubt very much it would do anything to change my mind- but it would be interesting.

History does tend to repeat itself, and all of the turmoil that was going on in Rome, gays were much more prominent. Back then, most people didn't think much of it though, unlike today.

I'm just saying I'm not really against it, but I don't really want to know either way if you are gay or not, and whether or not you're married to another person of the same sex.

I actually don't know any gay people that I know of. I might know some. I guess considering I do stage acting it's a little weird I wouldn't hahaha.

Anyway, it's an important issue to me because I believe freedom should be for EVERYONE. Not just for those born with "ideal" social traits.

While I agree that rights should be available to everyone regardless of sexual orientation. I do not accept that it should be called marriage. Marriage is something set forward by the church long ago, and should be accepted as such. I dont object to "married" gay couples, just dont call it marriage.

I'm tired of this, Rome didn't fall because of homosexuality. If anything Rome's fall actually had more to do with its adopting Christianity*. A pacifist religion is hardly the best choice for a militarist state... though today we seem to have worked through that by ignoring the pacifist part.

Marriage violates the separation of church and states so I would prefer that people get married at church and go downtown for a civil union certificate from the state.
Plus marriage is the first step towards divorce.

Yeah. I can see this point. I think for simplicities sake, if no other reason, it should all be called marriage or all called civil unions.

Well I'm from IL and I'm all for Gay marriage.

To 2012WontHappen: I must sadly take a glance at the forum guidelines and say the old harrowed phrase, "Search Button".
I saw this thread 10 times after Prop. 8 failed. So why not just comment on an old thread?
Sorry, just sayin'.

Oh, you're tired of it? I'm sorry. I didn't realize. Did I credit it the entire Fall of Rome to gays? No. No, I did not. Besides, Christianity is hardly pacifist. Just because we focus on the whole Jesus part, doesn't mean there aren't chapters of war in our book.

Sum of its parts. Thats what lead to the downfall, being gay was one of them.

He doesn't need to become a Necromancer and ressurrect an old thread. Really, its fine that he makes a new one since Prop 8 was a few months back already.

I doubt that homosexuality had ANYTHING to do with the fall of rome. Probably some of the people who had a part in the fall were gay. But that's not because they were gay, that was just a coincidence. There were a lot more heterosexuals that contributed I'm sure.

I live in a state where gay marriage is legal and I am still waiting for the Earth to split open and spit forth rivers of blood and fire while the sky rains down hellfire and ash. You know like the Bible said somewhere that know one can identify exactly where but are dead certain it's in there somewhere.
