However, only this generation has unleashed the gamer within me and has gotten me actively engaged in the video game world.

What can I say? I still enjoy firing up Duke Nukem 64 or Turok 2 on occasion. It's the N64 first, then the Megadrive (thats the Genesis if you're American), then it goes to the PS2 and finally onto the 360 (that's my order of favoritism).

Definitely N64 era, The games are just better! I would have to say Melee is my favourite game and then Mario Kart 64 and Perfect Dark. Why did they screw up all the latest games? Why?

My friends and I hooked up the old 64 to play those classics instead of playing with the Wii.

anyone who tells you gaming was better when ## was a missile, they're an ignorant bint

Quite.

I mean, c'mon, the original Doom? You can pretend it's fun to look like a gaming expert, but deep down in the chasm of your soul it's boring the shit out of you.

N64, Saturn, Playstation. Playstation was my first console and therefore introduced me to console gaming for which I am very grateful.

Really saying the newest is the best is like saying the 2009 corvette is the best ever, yeah it's faster and prettier but there's panache to driving around in a 1970 454 Stingray.

In the same vein I have to say that the N64/Playstation era was the best. It was absolutely genre defining. GoldenEye set the stage for multiplayer FPS (and really story based FPS), Final Fantasy made the leap to true 3D, Resident Evil/Silent Hill 'nough said, Zelda went from "find a key in this room and use it in this room" to actually having substance, and people went from saying how many months they played a game for to exactly how many hours it took to beat a game. Games finally had substance, style and playability. The games before were either repetitive or just plain sophomoric while the games since are just reiterations of what was created in those few short years.

Wait, where's the Dreamcast disappeared off to?
I'm assuming that one was left out on purpose otherwise the poll would of been pointless.
Dreamcast is somewhat of a bastard console, not sitting squarely in any generation. It came out 4 years after PS1 so that it could dance on it, only for its bigger brother to come along 2 years later.

I don't think that's the point. The way I read the question, it's.. Which console generation gave you the most total utility? Just because Doom isn't fun to play right now, doesn't mean it wasn't a blast to play when it was first released. If you weren't there when Doom was first released, then I guess you wouldn't be a very good official on the subject. Which is why the ps1/saturn/N64 generation will probably win.. because most of the people on the Escapist was about the right age when they came out.

As for me, I'm an old hat.. and to me it was an excellent day when I had my 486 computer in one hand and my SNES in the other. I can honestly remember having more fun gaming then I ever have, now. I was there for previous generations, but the SNES just hit me at the right time in my life.

In Japan the SNES (Super Famicom) actually started online console gaming.

I chose the SNES era, but never played any of the consoles you mention. My gaming days started with the Amiga 500 which was produced between 1987 and 1991(a bit on the C64 in the beginning but...) and that era was the closest of the choices to that time.

I refuse to choose as well.

I can't decide between Gamecube era and Wii era.

All 3 consoles in the gamecube era had so many great games. So many amazing games.

But this era isn't even over and has so many amazing games >.<. And it's not even over.

I can't choose.
