The potential for good games can only increase with improved time and technology; despite that, I had the most fun with games during the SNES era... Huh. I guess it also blurs a bit since I do a lot of PC gaming, which only has two real generations: "before video cards" and "after video cards"

Back in the day things were better. At least thats I have been told. I honestly was not around back in the day and only caught the second half of the 16 bit era. Everyone has a favorite time though, whats yers'?
anyone who tells you gaming was better when ## was a missile, they're an ignorant bint

Quite.

I mean, c'mon, the original Doom? You can pretend it's fun to look like a gaming expert, but deep down in the chasm of your soul it's boring the shit out of you.
I don't think that's the point. The way I read the question, it's.. Which console generation gave you the most total utility? Just because Doom isn't fun to play right now, doesn't mean it wasn't a blast to play when it was first released. If you weren't there when Doom was first released, then I guess you wouldn't be a very good official on the subject. Which is why the ps1/saturn/N64 generation will probably win.. because most of the people on the Escapist was about the right age when they came out.

As for me, I'm an old hat.. and to me it was an excellent day when I had my 486 computer in one hand and my SNES in the other. I can honestly remember having more fun gaming then I ever have, now. I was there for previous generations, but the SNES just hit me at the right time in my life.
Oh don't get me wrong, I used to like my SNES when I was a kid, but in contrast to today's games they really are poor, and didn't give me the same sense of experience that today's games give.

Just because you don't like a certain style of gaming because it is fairly old doesn't mean it isnt fun. The control scheme I admit is a bit dated now but they have plenty of programs that allow full look mouse control with the old 2d sprites. Hell you can even play Doom on the 360 now. The only modern games that captured what Doom 1 and 2 were about was Serious Sam and Painkiller, and it certainly wasn't Doom 3.

uhhh.. I didn't write that. You must have messed with the quotes and deleted what I actually wrote. Curlycrouton wrote that and Altorin wrote the one you're attributing Curlycrouton for. I actually have no idea how you did that, haha.

the xbox was probobly one of the most underlooked consoles, it started online console gaming and PGR
Actually, Dreamcast started online console gaming as we know it.
WIN! This information is very true.
In Japan the SNES (Super Famicom) actually started online console gaming.
I knew somebody was going to say this, but I just hoped and prayed everybody could read the entire post. I said, "as we know it." The SNES required alternative hardware to get it online, whereas the Dreamcast came with a built in modem and use of the internet. Whereas the SNES was completely limited and archaic, the Dreamcast pioneered it like "we know it". The games for the SNES weren't even designed for online play. The 14.4 modem tricked the SNES into thinking that someone was playing with the second controller port. Is that "As we know it" today?

If you were going to say that, why did you stop there? Why not go with the Famicon, when they tried to do online banking with it? http://design4dev.wetpaint.com/page/Famicom+%27Internet%27?t=anon

So, I repeat, the Dreamcast was the first system designed for online gaming.

Playstation/N64 era.

It's the era when gamig really took off as a mass media.
It's also the time when I was young enough to be a massive fanboy, but managed to avoid it...

This one and the last one, I'd have to say. Too many games that I enjoy far more than the others.

I havnt been a gamer long enough to compare every generation but the ps1/n64 era was pretty good from my limited experience and ps2/xbox also kicks current-gen into the dirt.

Its a pretty good measurement that i at least dislike more things about this gen;
Wii - far too useless to be commonplace, twitchy controllers, no support for gamecube controllers in the main menu, STUPID cheap speaker that completely stops immersion, gimicky games...
Xbox360 - Dieing. Making you pay for internet access that to me seems on par or inferior to the other systems. Being loud and hot enough to be heard outside and to warm my english room in winter. Ugly IMO. Bandwagon name.
PS3 - Lack of games. Badly designed store. Annoying see-through controllers and skittish motion sensing. None of the potential it was sold on being put to much use.

That and almost every current-gen game Ive played has turned out to be disappointing on some level - they all feel like they've needed another few months in development, eg; MGS4, Fable 2, GTA4 etc.. (before you burninate me know that i still love the first 2)

Ah, but the Super Famicom introduced the idea of DLC, with the 'Third Quest' of the LoZ.

It just feels like that the next gens don't seemed to have lived up to the standers they created for themselves. I still have my PS2, the first exact one that I bought, and it still works playing dvds and games for my little sister now. How many people with 360 can say that?

Your reason against the PS3 don't really seem to hold weight, It has games, whats wrong with the store design? Whats wrong with the see-through controllers? Ok you got me on the motion sensing, that does get annoying.

I have had my fun in every era, but nothing compares to the SNES. It was just fun all around and had games that are absolutely timeless.

I guess the PC doesn't count since it's been thriving longer than any console :p

Wasn't it only released in Japan and extremely limited at that? That's hardly "designed for online gaming", which has been the point I've been trying to drive home this whole time. Just because you can think of one small instance hardly takes that point away.

I stand behind the statement that the Dreamcast was the first console designed for online gaming.
