...

This thread reminded me...remember that mini-series on Discovery or, History channel that showcased a bunch of Mega-Projects? Wasn't one of them a 'floating city' or something? It was basically the size of a dozen cruise ships only people lived on the thing full time.

Anyway, that's what I would buy for 4.3 million. Not some stupid yacht but a full-on floating city. Wealth symbols like that 'super yacht' are just moronic. There are much better ways to use gold and, meteor and, dino-bones. There's way better things you can do with 4.3 billion dollars.

I'm in the 'it's his money' camp, and if he wants to spend it on a gold plated yacht then I'd go so far as to say it is human right to do so.

That said, I still think he is an idiot - I mean really, how much extra utility is he going to get from the extra 4,000,000,000 he spent? It just doesn't make sense.

I know he is going to wake up one morning and think;
'Shit, I should have bought a jumbo jet'

...he'd probably try to gold plate that as well...

Thousands of children die every single day and this guy is buying a boat which does absolutely nothing a regular boat does not do except compensate for his likely extremely small genitals?

Whoever the buyer is, I find him/her a disgusting egocentric asshole. Luxury is one thing, spending billions on it is quite something else.
I would buy it just to piss you off.

Of course. But I'd also need to install some laser turrets so as to defend from the ravaging poor people who would wish to steal my precious yacht. They have rabies don't you know?

What the hell?

I don't know the buyer, so I can't pass judgement and say that he's an egocentric douchebag, but the evidence is presented that he is one.

You can't take your money with you, and you should enjoy life. But this seems way over the top. No, it IS way over the top.

Rabid peoples have an irrational fear of water. As long as it doesn't sprout wheels and go cruising down the road, you should be okay, turrets or no turrets.

But get the turrets anyway, because lighting the remains on fire would be awesome.

Also, YouTube it.

I have one small problem with this logic. So, quick question- what exactly is "bad" about this purchase?

Don't get me wrong, it's wasteful and rather stupid, I know. I just fail to see any harm coming from it. If anything, it beats the alternative of "man lets 4 billion dollars sit in bank account for 100 years", as in this case at least a few boat builders are getting a paycheck.

"The money could have been used to feed starving children" is a valid argument in stating that there are better alternatives to this boat, butthat doesn't mean the boat was a bad choice. The lack of good does not imply bad.

I would compare it to... let's say a guy tied to some train tracks. If I randomly stumble upon him and free him, then that is obviously a good decision. However, seeing him and failing to free him isn't a bad choice. I'm not directly responsible for any harm, and while I probably could have saved him if I tried harder, it doesn't make me a bad person.
It's wasteful. Waste is bad. There's nothing this boat provides that a lesser boat wouldn't.

That insanely expensive boat provides no benefit whatsoever even to himself.

He's losing that money anyway without getting any tangible benefit from it, he could used it to benefit those who need it. Instead the only persons who benefit are those promoting waste and egocentric posturing and probably already rich.

It's a bad choice.

It's like stumbling upon a man tied to some train tracks, walking over and cutting off his watch and necklace while you already possess a perfectly fine watch and necklace and then walking of again. You expend the effort of cutting something free anyway, but instead of cutting something free that benefits others you cut something free that doesn't even benefit yourself (as you already have a watch and necklace) but only serves to improve your vanity.

If you are saying that "if you had the money," would I

A) Have only that or
B) Have "the money" to buy that

If A, naturally no!

But if I have "the money" (I don't know, lets say, 100 billion billion) I would totally buy it. .. Couple actually, because I would need a platinum plated also ;)

<---- The point

<---- Your head

What I was saying is that you do not know how much money he has given to charity in the past. And thus, you are commiting the same action you are decrying others for.
What I'm saying is that I don't care.

He spend over 4 billion dollars on something that does nothing at all a boat worth half a million dollars can not do.

He wasted 3.995 million dollars on his vanity. That's 3.995.000.000 dollars. Let that number sink in.

He spend that on nothing but his vanity. Not even on something like a car that's useful and helpful, just his vanity.

If he spend 4 billion things that were useful and helpful, even if only to himself and the people directly around him, I wouldn't complain.

But he spend near 4 billion on his vanity. That makes him, in my book, a despicable egocentric asshole. No matter what else he has done.
I can think of something it does that a 500K boat can't, it seems to piss off you guys an awful lot.

I just imagine this guy with a big 'ol trollface grin, wearing a monocle of lucrative value.

as I just pointed out, someone clearly has.
What? you thought this guy became mega-rich by playing nice? this guy has left many a rage-faces in his time, and probably takes pleasure in each one.

That would be really annoying to keep clean. Plus that top photo looks shooped. I couldn't imagine keeping a gold plated boat clean lol.
Hmmm. Well it looks surreal, but that could be the gold there.

And isn't gold like nobel metal. I think it would be easier to keep clean than less noble metals or plastics or whatnots.

My yacht is going to be so much cooler than their yacht.
I like the sound of your yacht...
