Recently I got into a dispute with my flat mates as to what the greatest FPS of all time was. Obviously I was backing Doom, after choosing it over Duke Nukem 3D (The hardest decision of my life), anyway to be annoying the others splintered with many different choices - Quake, Duke Nukem 3D and Wolfenstein 3D.

So what I'm asking in a round about way is what the masses feel, and my flat mates decided to accept the general consensus in a bid to end this dispute. So which is greater in your opinion: Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Wolfenstein 3D or other?

Of all time?

Well, that seems to immediately preclude any and all the older FPSes, as while they were great when they came out, they are certainly not the greatest of all time.

While I would like to say Halo 1 (as it was pretty good when it came out and is decent still) it has been superceded. Far Cry might be a better alternative, or one of the Rainbow Six games (though I haven't played any recent ones).

But I'm going to pull an o-yari out of my backside, ignore what I just said and vote Painkiller. No plot what so ever but it's just too damn fun. It's mindless slaughter in extremely fun manner put to then umpteenth power and it has a gun that shoots shuriken and lightning.

Shuriken and lightning.

Nope, can't beat that. So, voted other because the best FPS is Painkiller.

Wolf3d was one of my first ever games, so I'm stupidly biased towards it, but playing through them nowadays I prefer classic Doom.

[small]As with most "what do you thinks the best" questions it kind of tends on my mood, so these are subject to change.[/small]

Best single player, Dues Ex for the options of doing things and I liked hacking things, or Far Cry because of its open spaces and stealth/tactical options. Or the original Ghost Recon for tactical options actually, I wish I had picked up Rainbow 6 in my youth.

Multiplayer its either Quake 3 for fast paced classic fps gameplay or Call of Duty 2 if your feeling slower and objective.

Call of Duty: 4. . .

Yeah... I know... I only say this is the game because I've played it and loved it more than any FPS to date (Being the huge FPS fan that I am, that's saying something). I have tons of respect for the classics like Wolf3D, Doom, Quake, Etc, but while they have all played major roles in the history of FPS gaming, they all had their weaknesses that were eventually improved upon over and over till one final product emerged that delivered everything I've ever wanted in a FPS.

I don't see why there is a poll. And why the greatest of all times always has to be from a gazillion years ago. Call Of Duty 4 is TGOAT for me.

Where's Goldeneye?

I'm not sure if I'd go so far to call it the greatest, but I love the original Operation Flashpoint.

Although I prefer to use revolvers, and I tend to give lower scores to games that don't have them, I have to admit: Aliens Vs. Predator 2 (For the PC) was the single finest FPS I have ever played, period. And what's truly amazing about that is that they also included the ability to play as an alien...which had no shooting at all. They outdid everyone while multi-tasking. Go them. Perfect Dark is a runner up, largely because they did unlockables so damn well-and because their humour was so damn good. For crying out loud, they credited one guy in the credits for "Guns and Visual Orgasms." I am not kidding.

As for Third Person Shooters, Resident Evil 4, tied with Resident Evil 5. maybe slightly in 4's favor.

I say Far Cry. Great AI, great non-linear maps and great combination of stealth and action.

It's grrrrreat!

Also, it had the magnificentest story of all times, including the future and times of alternate dimensions.

Modded OpFlashpoint and ARMA.

And I raged a little bit when I saw the title of this thread.

I don't know about the others, so I say Doom. I was thinking that before I read the poll. Because it's the only one I know that was a genuine FPS and not a mixture of anything else. Demons take over, kick their ass.

Of the classics, definitley DOOM. Wolf 3D got boring fast as hell, the level design in Duke Nukem 3D SUCKED and Quake, while fun, just lacked direction. I actually liked the first player, but DOOM is still one of the most fun games today. Well, I had a blast with it anyway, so it definitley gets my vote.

Okay, some newer shooters might trump it in certain areas (CoD 4 for example), but still, DOOM deserves its place.

Star Wars Dark Forces.

First FPS game to allow looking up and down, jumping and ducking etc as far as I know.

Goldeneye? That's laughable. Although it was certainly fun, it was nowhere near the greatest FPS ever. Most people just love it because it induces nostalgia.

I'd say DOOM.

Doom, because it was the First ever FPS I believe. And If it is the First ever of something, it is always the best.

It's not the first. Doom was released in 1993. Wolfenstein 3D (1992) was the first true fps, though Maze War (1974!) originated some concepts of what later would be called the fps.

For me, the best classic will always be Half-Life for its great singeplayer campaign, sturdy multiplayer and many fun mods like CS, TFC, DoD, Natural Selection, ...
