I know, I know, vs thread, but trust me I actually have a point to this one. I suspect the voting will go a certain way and after a while I'll add to this post detailing my actual reason for asking this question and a little rant to go with it. Please post your reason why you voted the way you did as well, as I suspect it will help with what I tentatively call my research.

Alright, let's try this again.

Also captcha had rewrote in it, haha.

EDIT: Well the voting went exactly how I expected it to, but the thing that surprises me somewhat is the reasons. Obviously I already knew that people prefer Red Dead Redemption, this was to help me figure out why. I'm glad to see a large number of people praising RDR for it's setting, atmposphere and weapons. Doubly so because those are basically the only differences between it and Grand Theft Auto 4. Seriously. It's more or less the same story, the games are built on the same engine and the whole premise is basically the same, ie it's a gritty, story driven open world action adventure. What I was actually expecting to see more of was Saints Row praise (which was still there) and critisism of Grand Theft Auto 4 for not being "True to Grand Theft Auto Form" (Again, still there). This was because whenever GTA4 pops up in discussion, it seems people can't bash it fast enough and claim that it wasn't a true sequel to San Andreas. I'm happy to see people judging the game on by it's own merits.

Red Dead Redemption. I prefer the world and story. GTA 4 is great fun multiplayer tho, even if there is more to do in RDR.

I found RDR boring as hell. I loved the concept and was pumped to play it until I actually borrowed and xBox and tried it for myself...maybe it was the lack of cars and high powered weapons but I didn't go more than a few missions in without putting it down.

edit: I played neither for the story.

Completed both, played DLC stories for both. I spent way more time with Redemption's multiplayer and I just LOVE westerns, so RDR gets the nod. IV is very good as well.

DON'T MAKE MEH CHOOSE!

I'd say I prefer the gameplay in GTA IV, but I much prefer the characters in RDR.

I'm... gonna have to swing for Read Dead. Marston is just too awesome not to.

RDR's setting is better.
GTA4's story is better until the ending.
RDR's combat is better. (In RDR it actually feels like I'm using a gun, in GTA4 it just feels like I'm using an invisible death ray)
RDR's travel is better.

Both are pretty dull. The only difference is that RDR's ending completely makes up for it.

RDR's bloody brilliant, as well as the Undead Nightmare.
GTA IV is complete shite unless you have the patience to install a LOT of mods that make it better.
Like I did. Now it's much more fun, but a game shouldn't rely on it's modding community to be worth a damn.
In my opinion.

Why does the Captcha keep talking about Grain?

RDR was basically GTA4 without cars, buildings or bazookas, and with a doormat as the protagonist.

I love westerns movies....so..ya, Red Dead.

I hated GTA4, I played the first hour or so then I put it away out of boredom =/

I found RDR to be pretty good, but not fantastic. Bit too repetitive, in my opinion.
GTA 4, on the other hand, is probably my favourite game from the last 3 or 4 years.
I loved every aspect of it, more so than most people it seems.

I prefer GTA IV.

After absolutely loving Red Dead Revolver, I thought that I'd really enjoy Redemption... But alas I found it extremely boring, to the point where I haven't got far into it because neither the story nor the gameplay made me feel I should continue.

I played GTA IV through from beginning to end, and got the expansion for it (The Ballad of Gay Tony and the other one I forget the name of) and completed both of them.

Which does mean I have to stick to Gun for my western fix (Even though I do like western games, RDR seemed to fall flat for me... I should perhaps give it another go at some point)

I would vote option 3, neither of them.
I understand why people like them. They are not bad games, they're just boring to me. The 'extra stuff to do' they put in to both, like pool table, poker, darts, horseshoe... instead of that, put in some more diverse missions (not just go there, shoot stuff, profit).
If I have to choose (and clearly, only being 2 options, I should), I'll go with GTA4. The pacing of GTA is better to me than RDR, even though your cousin calls you every 10 seconds.
RDR's open world is more open than GTA, but most of it is barren waste(d) land, with little to do by way of story progression. GTA4s city feels more alive, more of a fun place for me to be. Fun still being relative, I'd have more fun watching paint dry at times.

Grand Theft Auto 4. I liked Red Dead a lot but the setting just didn't do it for me. There was just so much empty, lifeless dessert and your only way to geht through it was a horse. Also, RDR took itself to seriously. GTA4 had a perfect balance between serious drama and over the top comedy.

I voted RDR.
I love GTA IV and both its DLCs, but I'm such a sucker for the setting, story and characters of RDR.
Story and atmosphere is always a big concern for me when playing a game and I think both games did well in that department, but I find RDR to be extremely immersive. And it probably has one of the most bold and mature endings I've ever encountered in a game.

And shooting up bandana wearing outlaws in a ghost town is fun! (Luckily. Because I admit that is basically all you do.)
Fun!

As I opened the thread I hoped there would be a "like both equally as much" option as i love them both so much. I voted GTA4 because I have 100%ed it (and the expansions) as well as played it to death to the extent that I could be a cab driver for liberty city... pity it doesn't exist. Though saying that, rdr is just as awesome. its just that GTA4 ive put more time into.

The original GTA4 vs RDR? RDR by miles. But the Episodes of Liberty City vs RDR? Now that's a tough choice.

While I couldn't care about GTA4, I absolutely adored The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Less repetivity, less annoying friend bullshit and characters I liked a lot more. RDR would've won here if Rockstar hadn't screwed the pooch with Marston's character at one point and the horribleness that was Mexico. Now it's a tie.

And shit to do outside of killing random pedestrians and the story missions. And no freakishly annoying friend sy- *ring ring* No Roman goddammit I don't want to go bowling!

I prefer RDR's story, even the Undead Nightmare story is really fun, but I prefer GTA IV's multiplayer a ton more than RDR's.
I'm on the fence.
