Guns need ammo but allow anyone of any skill or strength level kill anything from a distance (provided the gun is powerful enough. A pistol isn't going to cut it against a rhinocerous).
A knife never need reloading but not only needs the user to be at close range but have the strength to drive the blade home. They also have to be resharpened frequently.

It is all rather context sensitive, isn't it?

How about fist daggers on robotic telescoping arms or bladed chains?

In future there could be guns that shoot knives
There effective for self defence

knives/knives:
Cheaper
More stylish
I guess this category includes swords (lot of sweet looking swords out there compared to guns)
There more personal (maybe why the Joker liked them...)
Sword fights look cooler then gun fights
There are hidden blades to (then again small guns that you can hide in your sleeve to now-a-day
Don't run on ammo.

I wish to collect both in the future. I actually watch "the knife show" for fun sometimes. It's on randomly late at night and it is one of those live infomercials where they offer random deals on different sets of knives.

Guns are pretty kickass in their own right too. Some of the more intricate ones I would kill to own.
