I'd call the cops first, and let them know that I was armed. Then I'd wait outside the shower with gun in hand and wait for the police to arrive, and if he even steps out of the shower, shoot him. If I can avoid damaging my house by waiting until he gets out, I'm all for it.

Call the cops, ask him what the hell he is doing/ what he wants.
If he's civilised, I wouldn't harm him.

I'd try to block the door so that he can't get out and then call the police. I probably would also get my bokken ready just to be safe.

"How are you?"
"Oh, hello."
"Making yourself comfortable?"
"Sorry, man. It's just been so long..."

If this were the situation and he was homeless, I'd help the guy out and send him off with a tupperware container of something.

"Hello, having a nice shower?"
"OHFUCKINGSHITGOD!"

If the guy rushed me, or something, I'd obviously have had something on hand in case. I'd have to see a response after I greet them before I acted.

You return to your house to find a crazy person who could have a weapon in your bathroom, and people are feeling sorry fot the mad man? 99% of the world does not deserve returning to their OWN HOME with an unvited guest who is already guilty of B&E, using their shower.

Well clearly this is just showing that the education system in any country is failing.

More towards the poll, I'd talk to them first. There's a good bit of home robberies committed by people who are first timers or genuinely dont want someone to get hurt (usually cause they know that will mean more jail time). So I'd talk to them and see if that can sedate them. I'll be honest, if the person broke in, but calmly left and left everyone with me, i'd let them go. I'd get the locks changed, but I'd let them go.

However, if they cant be reasoned with, you subdue. NOT kill, NOT maim, NOT disable, SUBDUE. Then call the cops. It looks bad if you beat someone, even if it is in home defense. There's no reason that in your own house where you hold the advantage of home field, you shouldnt be able to subdue someone.
Yeah. Subdue. That sounds reasonable. I mean everyone in the world can easily subdue everyone else. The only reason for violence is of course the evils in peoples heart.

Well back here on earth some people don't have the option to subdue others, and if force into a confrontation have to do whatever it takes to defend themselves.
Eh, maybe it comes with training. But thats what you should do anyway, at least thats what the few police officers I've talked to have told me. They hate a bloody scene and arguing if the case had obessive force used in it. BUt like I said, there's no reason you cant subdue someone, rather then just beat them to a bloody unconscious pulp.
I'm a big guy, I do have some hand to hand combat training as well as experience as a rather out of hand youth to draw on if I need to. Not everyone is in the same boat. I know I wouldn't attempt half what I would have a decade ago.

Screw the police officer's whining about a little extra work. I am going to do what I have to in order to defend myself. This doesn't automatically mean I have some sick desire to hurt someone. More that I already understand that if it came down to it I will stop someone with deadly force in order to protect myself or another.

Trying to always subdue first would be noble if it wasn't going to get your average person killed or injured more often then not.

Edit: I feel I should point out something that slips many people. Defending yourself is never an aggressive action. In order to be force into defending yourself you have to be attacked first. In this situation trying to rush into the bathroom and subdue the person till the cops arrive would be attacking them. Not exactly defending on self. Not that I find anything wrong with it if the person is in your house. I am also not knocking your personal believe that you can end any confrontation only that you can't realistically expect every other person to do the same.

Something similar happened recently where a confused man rang on a woman's door. She invited him in, made him a sandwich, called the cops, and kept the man company while waiting for them to arrive. Can't find the article now though...

I want to be her when I grow up.

I'd call emergency services for sure if a stranger broke into my house even if he/she didn't do anything except take a shower or ask for something to eat. But to get that person help, not to penalise him/her. If he/she attacked me I would defend myself, but otherwise I'm not a violent person.

Really, it all depends on why the hell some idiot would break in just to take a shower. If they were covered in something they needed to wash off (battery acid, oil, etc) and breaking in was merely a means to that end I'd probably just give them my old bathrobe for when they're done. If it's just a way for them to gloat about their successful break-in though, then I'd bar the door, call the cops and grab my trusted meat cleaver from the kitchen as a way to KEEP them where they are. (Responses not valid for sexy women who'd put out easily)

Really, the response depends entirely on the crook. The only time my house was burglarized was when I was 10, and a classmate came over and stole my mom's jewelry. If it's someone like that you really can't do anything other than subdue or detain them, because otherwise the cops would arrest YOU. Meanwhile there was this news bit a few months back about a guy who cut down his armed home invader with a katana, but because the crook had a gun no charges were filed. Really, you can't just create a broad "what-if" scenario without setting some boundaries.
