I'm female. I like to play as i guy so i can stare at their bums. So i guess it's the opposite for men right?

It really doesn't matter to me what gender I play. But on XBL, I made my avatar a male so people would take me more seriously.

I used to play as females to easily distinguish from the saves a brother of mine did who went more with the "idealized version of himself" route. It just stuck, kind of. Now I create female characters more out of habit than anything.

Then in fighting games, girls are usually the quick poking characters as opposed to the huge hulking guys that are slow and do massive damage so I pick those. Chun-Li, Cassandra, Jam vs Zangief, Astaroth, Potemkin.

I'm quite shallow. I'll pick the prettiest option. If it's a guy, then never mind. I'm so used to playing male characters in single player games that I don't really think about it.

If i'm playing a 3rd person game where I'm given the choice, sure I'll take a female toon. I'd rather have a woman's butt floating around in front of me than some hairy dudes'.

There seems to be a lot of the 'I'd rather not look at a dude's ass' going on. I don't get why you'd be looking at your character's ass. surely there are more important things. Like the monsters trying to dismember you, for instance.

I love switching genders online! I personally love the fact that no one can tell. Maybe it's just my love for confusing people.

I usually have two accounts for most everything, one male and one female. That way if I get tired of getting hit on, I can switch. Either that, or I ask the flirter how they know I'm not really a man with a skirt fettish. That usually sends them packing.

What about when you are walking between places.....

Like what others said. I just go with what looks the best in that class...I do know quite a few of the guys in my Corporation in EVE play as girls because most of the Higher level agents and some players treat you better.

Don't you keep an eye on your surroundings? There are a lot of places you can be looking. I just don' think the argument really holds sway.

Sometimes in games you have nothing to do....

Unlike my MMO.... Always something to kill.

That would probably play a large part. Personally, I nearly always play a female. I really don't know why. There's the obcious 'staring at buttocks' thing, but as I choose female in Fallout 3, which I play in first person..meh. Probably because RPGs are a way of escaping from reality. And sometimes you've just gotta try to escape as much as possible.

That, or we're all horrilble perverts. Probably both.

And, as has already been mentioned, playing girls in MMORPGS is incredibly amusing, as most of the other palyers are twisted, broken lonely men. They will follow you and naively believe everything you say, give you free stuff, etc. I mean, do they really think that is going to get them into some random girls bed, who's probably on the other side of the world anyway. It's just retarded. Me and my freind are going to conduct an experiment, by which we insert ourselves into a free MMORPG, probabl Runescape, and see how much free stuff we can get by pretending to be girls. We did a similar thing on COD2 a while back. And they belived us. Amusing.

I usually avoid being female in Pen-and paper, because, with my group, it gets way to weird, way to quickly.

I might play a female character in a game where it makes an impact. Like in Elder Scrolls, Fallout or Mass Effect your characters gender can have quite a few effects in game so it is good to see the game from a different perspective when replaying it.

I think perhaps "staring at" is the wrong choice of words... more like "constantly see". Sure you fight, and you jostle, you and loot, and then you glance at your warrior's ass and say "Oh, look, two flabby shanks of ham in a tincan".

It's the same reason people take to modifying thier GUI to be prettier and more user friendly; I didn't like being subjected to little popping EQ gems for hours at a time either.

I actually have a tendency to play females more than males in most games, online and off(when available)... I don't particularly have a reason, it's just what I do.

If it's a game where story and role playing matter in some respect (Mass Effect, Fallout) I play a dude. If it doesn't matter I'll play whatever looks cooler.

When I finally gave in and got the free trial for WoW, I made a hot chick night elf rogue. Right away some guy comes up and offers me a bunch of stuff and then helps me do a bunch of quests. I thought, "The WoW community sure is friendly!" Then he asks if I'm really a girl, I laugh and tell him no, he gets mad, accuses me of 'misleading' him and asks for his junk back.

After that episode I created a male paladin. *sigh* being a girl in these games must be tough.
easier to be more misleading and say your a girl. then you let them down and say something like "your not my type" then get more free stuff.

well, for my 3 month foray into age of conan... I was a stygian (black) woman herald of xotli who ran around with only a cape on unless there was some enemy i couldn't beat (which was rare) (and actually, i didn't poach the idea from Yahtzee, i started that character about 2 weeks before i first heard of ZP)

If you are going to stare at a computer screen all day, would you rather look at hot ass or man cleavage?
I think this is so full of crap.

Why don't girls ever pick men characters then? After all, they'd be looking at gorgeous hot muscled men.
