I never really understood the complaint about subscription fees.

15 dollars a month is pocket change. And I most likely make less money than you guys do(About 1500 a month). So 15 dollars a month to contribute to an already good game with great replay value is a paltry sum. So I never mind paying for it.

As for everything else, I guess my real complaint about Guild Wars was that it was already outdone by Phantasy Star Online five years ago. But whatever, two different games for two different purposes.

I guess you answered my question. For that, I thank you. :)
I'm more opposed to subscription fees than I suppose most people would be, since I currently don't have a source of income. I am, however, great at making money last...which is made difficult when paying a subscription. It isn't a large amount of money really, and if you can really get immersed in a game and commit to it, it's a worthwhile price, but it's an expense that can make or break a game for me at this point.

I never played Phantasy Star Online. I've heard good things though. My guess is almost everything (if not everything) done by Guild Wars was done before, but it's still an outlier in a market filled with clones. Whether or not it works for you is purely an opinion thing, of course.

Anyway, glad I could be of service :)

im not getting either one, and i have never played Guild Wars or Star Wars: Galaxies... but i would choose The Old Republic, because i am a Star Wars fan. also, there doesnt seem to be many big MMO's that arent based on medieval fantasy.

Depends which one offers pay per play rather than a monthly subscription or which one goes free to play first. I'm a cautiously interested in Arkham Impostors though as it seems a good return to silliness for Monolith. A silly Monolith is an entertaining Monolith.

I should point out that Phantasy Star Online originally came out on the Dreamcast in early 2001. :p Four years before the first Guild Wars was even released. (Oh, and it was F2P on the Dreamcast)

And look where that fine, fine console is now.

Guild Wars 2 hands down. Although admittedly I didn't seek out to much info about ToR from the coverage it got on the Escapist literally nothing made me want to buy that game. GW2 devs on the other hand keep revealing things that I think are just amazing so I don't have to think for a second whether I'll buy it or not when it comes out.

...Unless I die of old age first.

Why not both? GW2 isn't sub based: you just have to pay for the box. There's literally no reason you couldn't own both...get TOR one month and GW2 another month.

Read somewhere on page 1. You can't commit fully to two MMO's and still, as noted earlier, be a human being.

I've played two MMOs before, and still had friends, done well at school, and other things that would qualify me as a "human". That's just a silly argument, and indicative of someone who probably has only ever played WoW (and played it rather badly at that, for not believing that one can juggle more than one MMO).

Just play both for goodness sake. If you want to, you'll find time for them. It's not hard.

So you have no idea where my avatar is from, do you? Hint: It isn't WOW, but it is a, wait for it, different MMO.

As stated in the OP, I'm asking people to make a choice, if you don't want to, feel free to not reply.

But it's a frivolous, pointless, almost totally hypothetical choice, since you could very realistically play both. This is akin to console wars in terms of silliness... perhaps even more so, since it is much more feasible to play one P2P mmo and one that is effectively f2p than own more than one hundred plus dollar consoles. GW was a perfect go-to game, and I assume GW2 is going to be an equally as fun go-to game. I mean... it just boggles my mind.

Guild wars 2. I really enjoyed the first, especially the strategy in selecting skills, and while TOR is cool and all, TBH I've had about enough of star wars by now, and GW2 seems to have a lot more that's new to offer than TOR. But I plan on at least trying both.

Old Republic most definitely. I didn't even like Guild Wars 1 so to be honest I didn't even know a second was being made.
check out it: Most people on this forum think that GW2 is going to be very similar to GW1 which it isn't. This isn't at you - mainly at some escapists in general.

I was excited for TOR until the gameplay videos. They've made a huge thing about voice acting (I hate the protagonist being voiced by the way) and it sounds pants. The gameplay seem to me to lack innovation. Guild Wars 2 on the other hand appears to be breaking at least some of the mould. My biggest problem with MMOs in general is the feeling that you are not having any permanent effect on the world which is being addressed to a certain extent in GW2 (personal storylines and personal, instanced home areas, public events which shape the environment). Also it looks absolutely gorgeous. The integration of concept art with the gameplay and movies in game is brilliant. I love the new approach to skills (even though I was skeptical at first as I loved the first GW). All of this with no subscription fee!

Also, not meaning to be flippant but I am going to be essentially a Viking with a pet shark. No further questions your honour!

ps. Who else reckons the final proffession will be Mesmer?

For those of you wishing to pick up a new MMORPG this year, which would you choose between these two?
Well, Guild Wars isn't even an MMO.
Guildwars 2 is. And that is the game the OP was talking about :)

OT:
I never liked any Star Wars games, I dig the movies though. My pick would be GW2, I've been following it for 4 years now. It's about time to launch it, right?

They both look fantastic. If they have free trials, then I might be tempted to give both of them a shot.

Let's see... judging from my name, would I want to play a game that takes place in the Star Wars universe or Fantasy-World-#4689...? Oh, Star Wars, I think. Probably.

Plus, I really like what BioWare are doing with the story focus, the crafting system, and the classes. Sure enough, GW2 could end up being better feature and gameplay-wise, but as long as that doesn't also mean that TOR's features and gameplay are bad... I'm still going to get a hell of a lot more enjoyment out of TOR.

I don't play a lot of MMOs. I started with Final Fantasy XI and stuck around for about 5 years. I tried WoW for a few months, but got bored with it. I played a trial or two for MMOs which I can't even remember the names of. I played Champions Online F2P... for two days before the thrill of my created character wore off. I need a world that appeals to me in order to enjoy an MMO enough to keep playing.

GW2 is TBA 2012, but anyway, TOR for me. I might pick up GW2, but I find Star Wars naturally more interesting. I'll admit that GW2 is probably more brave in what its doing in more areas, but those aren't particularly the things that bother me about MMOs.

Also: one's pay once and the other is subscription based (probably), so its not like I can't pick up both.

Guild Wars 2. TOR looks like it'd be fun, but similar to many other MMOs out there. Guild Wars, on the other hand, did an excellent job of breaking the mould the first time and seems to be outdoing that attempt this time. That and I really can't afford subscription fees and don't want to get bogged down trying to get my money's worth...with Guild Wars 2, I can buy it, play it, and take a break if I feel like it without worrying about losing money because of it.
Uhhh...

The first Guild Wars broke the mold last time?

How?
Low level cap, no stupid grinding the same shit over and over again, instanced everything, multiple tiers and forms of pvp, should I go on?
I'm playing Guild Wars now and I'm doing literally nothing but grinding. I've hit the level cap and gotten the 70 armor set, and I now have nothing to achieve except Hall of Monument points. I'm going through quests, which due to the restriction of going in groups, you get minimum xp and loot (the loot with which you can buy nothing of value). Yes, everything is instanced, cutting you off from the world entirely except when you're in hubs.

What do you mean by multiple tiers, and as far as PvP goes there's absolutely no learning curve in the arenas. I don't count the battlegrounds as PvP because the primary objective is killing NPCs.

/endrant
He or she meant there is little grinding in finishing the game which after you get your first set of armour basically little to no grinding is needed. Yes if you want to fill your Hall you need to grind. For god sake they want you to buy a set of armour that costs well over 1mil in game currency what did you expect? Also the big part about HoM is that it is optional same as those Superbosses you need to grid for in FF games. You don't have to do it.

Guild Wars has always been just pay for the game once.

OT: Well for the purposes of the thread Guild Wars 2 which is an obvious choice for me given that I did found a Guild Wars group. However, I do plan on getting both and as much as I hope GW2 does everything it says it does and TOR does everything it says it does I will wait and see if they hold up.
