Well Guild Wars is pay once and if anyone on the forum buys the game if it is like the last one they usually contain a code for a trial account so you could just ask if anyone has a spare trial code.

I'm bias to say Guild War 2 (since I love GW1 and own the other series like Nightfall). While TOR had wow me with their cinematics and the fact it's Star Wars but that doesn't draw me away from their gameplay.
TOR is still point and click like any other MMORPG (click on a enemy to move toward it and click a attack button). This isn't exactly fair to say since other MMORPG use this game mechanic but that was the reason why I stop playing GW1 (well also the game became too elite for me to continue). Guild Wars 2 is different from what I have seen in their gameplay video (you can evade enemies attacks and attack why moving).
Despite what I had said, the main reason why I will be buying Guild Wars 2 is that it still remain to be free to play just like the first game (well also I will be getting extra stuff from my time playing GW1). I assume that TOR wil be monthly fees although free to play had been getting popular lately but I can assume it will start out as monthly feee at the start.

TOR. I like Star Wars and I loved playing this game. GW2 looks cool from what I've seen but I haven't heard much about it.

I've nearly lost hope in the Star Wars franchise, even if Bioware is helping. I've seen the gameplay previews of Guild Wars 2 and I think it will be awesome, especially without a subscription fee.

Low level cap, no stupid grinding the same shit over and over again, instanced everything, multiple tiers and forms of pvp, should I go on?
I'm playing Guild Wars now and I'm doing literally nothing but grinding. I've hit the level cap and gotten the 70 armor set, and I now have nothing to achieve except Hall of Monument points. I'm going through quests, which due to the restriction of going in groups, you get minimum xp and loot (the loot with which you can buy nothing of value). Yes, everything is instanced, cutting you off from the world entirely except when you're in hubs.

What do you mean by multiple tiers, and as far as PvP goes there's absolutely no learning curve in the arenas. I don't count the battlegrounds as PvP because the primary objective is killing NPCs.

He or she meant there is little grinding in finishing the game which after you get your first set of armour basically little to no grinding is needed. Yes if you want to fill your Hall you need to grind. For god sake they want you to buy a set of armour that costs well over 1mil in game currency what did you expect? Also the big part about HoM is that it is optional same as those Superbosses you need to grid for in FF games. You don't have to do it.

Guild Wars has always been just pay for the game once.

OT: Well for the purposes of the thread Guild Wars 2 which is an obvious choice for me given that I did found a Guild Wars group. However, I do plan on getting both and as much as I hope GW2 does everything it says it does and TOR does everything it says it does I will wait and see if they hold up.
What else is there to do outside of HoM though?

Gold seems to only go to cosmetics, there's no perceivable armor or weapons to achieve after you get 70 armor/15-28 damage so making your build stronger through skill points seems useless, I already listed my gripes against PvP...what does that leave to do? As much as this seems like ranting, I'm really just trying to find something I'm doing wrong. I'd love to find out so I can enjoy it until GW2 comes out but I've just been frustrated at every turn.

As a huge KOTOR fan.....I loved Guild Wars, and I was looking for KOTOR 3 rather than an MMO. Guild Wars 2 all the way. Stunning visuals, engaging lore, sublime soundtrack and a real challenge and sense of community pervaded the original and made it great. Now GW2 should make it even better.

The Old Republic is just looking more and more cookie cutter as time goes on. Not just the gameplay, the fact that its apparently similar to WoW doesn't phase me (never played it) but the fact that so many story elements from Star Wars have just been copy pasted into a different timeline.


I'd rather go for something like GW2 which is promising a good number of interesting features..

I'm really torn about this. I'll likely finally get a full time job by the end of this year and I'll finally be able to afford a new MMO, and these two are the ones I have my eyes on.

On one hand, TOR is Star Wars (I love Star Wars) and it's by one of my all-time favourite developers (I love Bioware). On the other hand, it seems almost atavistic, focusing on an outdated paradigm and gameplay. Silver lining is that it's a tried and true paradigm, but still...

Guild Wars 2 sounds like it'll be trying a fair number of new things and I really like the "no subscription" part of the deal, but all the new stuff might turn out to not really work out. Also, I like my MMOs PvE with a touch of PvP, and GW1 was quite PvP oriented, so there's room for concern there as well...

All in all, I'll have to wait and see. One thing I can be sure of, whichever I get, I'll wish I got the other one... :p

GW2 has no subscription, just buy the game and you get all content and every update just like GW 1, except the obvious whole new expansions which in GW are literally a stand alone games worth, they do actually play stand alone if you want.

GW2 seems to be the best bet because it is free and it shows a lot of promise and a bit of innovation from the masses of MMORPG's.

The whole thing with not needing specific roles for people is a plus for me and one of the reasons that I will probably give it a try.

GW2, simply due to the fact that I don't have to pay for it over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, for the rest of time unless I decide I don't want to play anymore and/or the game becomes free to play which given SWG's condition right now and the fact that ToR is a massive money sink I don't see that happening any time in the near ever.

I would LIKE to play ToR more than GW2, I just won't do that payment model.

For a long time I've been far more interested in TOR. The more I hear about it since E3 with actual gameplay...the less I like about it. It feels less and less like it'll be bringing anything new to the table in terms of gameplay.

As such I'm far more in favor of GW2. I'd like to play through TOR's story, but I couldn't see sticking with it for more than a month or two all told.

GW2. I've been waiting since it's vague announcement years ago, this is worse than waiting for Diablo 3.

I'm pretty sure it won't be good as I've made myself believe it will. At least it will entertain me for a while, it's got some interesting new features to offer, the graphics are pretty good and the 'professions' (classes) all seem pretty entertaining.

Regardless, lets see how it does. :p

This is the same with me really, I've seen gameplay videos with both and TOR really underwhelms. More stagnant combat spamming macros really is dis-interesting. That and it has the holy trinity (heal, tank, dps) which I find annoying.

The personal story is interesting and I like the skill system they set up for GW2. More mobile and movement oriented combat with very different profession mechanics makes each of them feel different and the Mesmer better be a shoe in with book references and the fact their system of magic is Elemental-Necromancy-Mesmer

Getting to maximum level is only the beginning of Guild Wars 1. Have you completed all five campaigns? Did you know there's a new one coming out sometime this month (for free, updated automatically, just like the fifth)? Have you tried Hard Mode? the Elite Dungeons? the Challenge Missions? Have you joined a strong and/or helpful guild? Have you played the new PvP games and mechanics (added last month)? Have you collected more skills and experimented with build combinations? Have you improved your skill to the point of being able to solo areas or vanquishes, or do you still rely on allies and henchmen?

Guild Wars is not about gear grinding. As Jon Peters (lead content designer) said: "...it makes no sense. It's like playing a game of Chess where one player gets two queens because he's played longer." It's not about collecting the most/best things. It's about about exploration and personal development; collecting experiences. It does have a killer PvP community (including $100,000 monthly tournaments), for people who like that sort of thing. I would recommend starting in Jade Quarry or Random Arena if you're looking to get into it.

Ironically, the best way to describe both Guild Wars games comes from Star Wars: "You must unlearn what you have learned".

I love star wars, but the gameplay for TOR has failure written all over it. it looks stiff, rigid, and appears to add nothing to the MMO genre other than an emphasis on story, whereas guild wars 2 has bucket loads of innovative ideas and potential.

Guild wars 2 is very likely to go wrong, to be crippled by it's own ambition, but I'd rather take the risk.
