People give ashit about half life because they think its a good game. So doI. I'm getting pretty damn sick of seeing threads like this so this ones the last straw... Next time I see one of these the user who started its getting reported... Simple as.
The question is why people thing it's a good game, not why it's respected by gamers.

EDIT: Also the thread isn't going to shoot you. So I don't see why you're so peeved.

It's simply well-made and enjoyable, and in a sea of absolute shit (I'm looking at you, Shadow the Hedgehog), well, that's all I can ask for.

We all know it's not the Second Coming.

I have enjoyed the series since the original was released. I am very excited to play the third installment of Half-Life 3.

Main character never speaks, while everyone around him sucks him off as the one true svior to the whole planet. People praise Gordon's and Alyx's relationship, yet they fail to realize that he never even talks and she is a witty *****. Annoying levels that you can get lost in. Standard weapons, for the most part. I just don't see the appeal. Call me a consule tard or a Halo fanboy, but I enjoyed Halo 3 10 times more than I enjoyed Half-life.

This thread has been done to death. More than death in fact.

I played it for the first time back in fourth grade when the demo came out. It was the shit. Bought it, it was my favorite game ever at that point.

Years later I still believe it to be the shit mostly because it started many of the trends you see today in First Person Shooters. To someone playing it nowadays, it might seem like just another generic FPS, but it is so much more than that.

Love it, hate it, I don't give a damn. I've beaten it a million times and I still find it enjoyable.

The story and the gameplay get me... I love the characters and it also offers heaps of addons and other things (I.E. synergy)

I've been a PC gamer back since the early 90's. I was there when Wolfenstein, Doom, Descent, and Quake dominated the FPS genre, and I loved those games until half-life came along. Before I could get a copy of the full game, I played half-life: uplink, which was the demo. I was mesmerized by the immersion, action, scares, and humor evident in even that brief demo. Once I played The full version, I was hooked. I played Half-Life, Opposing Force, Blueshift, and Counterstrike for a long time after they came out. When I heard Half-Life 2 was coming out, I was excited, but my computer was too old to play those games, so I was left out of loop for a while. I played snippets of the game at a friend's place, but it wasn't the same as taking my time, and really appreciating a game on my own time, under my own conditions. Last year, i was able to buy a new computer and the first 2 games I purchased were Crysis and The Orange Box. Half-Life 2, episode 1, episode 2, and portal were all that I expected and more. I played them through right away, sometimes spending countless hours playing in a row, not knowing how long I had really spent playing. Now that I've conveyed my life's story, I'll answer the original question. Half-Life 2 is the best game series ever made because of the experience the player has playing it. The story, action, humour, weapons, characters, and music all converge to create a deeply enjoyable experience for many people. With that said, the half-life series is not perfect. There were some bugs in the original that infuriated me (getting stuck in a wall during an autosave) and certain areas were disproportionately difficult (the zen stage.) I still can't find a way to disable auto weapon selection, which was a gripe of mine from the original half life right through the series to the latest: episode 2. Some may have found the visuals to be lacking compared to other games of the same eras, such as Unreal with the original Half life, to Crysis with episode 2, but I find they hold up fine. To finish up, I think that the half life series has been the most enjoyable video gaming moments I've ever had, besting Crysis, Bioshock and others, if only by a few degrees. Valve, keep up the good work, and your millions of fans are waiting in the wings for Episode 3 and Portal 2. Long live the One FreeMan.

Eh. I never had the chance to play the original Half-Life, but it didn't take long to realize that the story boiled down to "aliens came through a dimensional rift and conquered the planet; kill them NAO!"

Half-Life 2 (and its episodic content) was a passable shooter with some interesting ideas, but in the end it was rather dull. Most of the environments were dull, the weapons were uninteresting, and while the characters were fairly realistic, they were just that: realistic. Ordinary. Run of the mill. Easily forgettable. Noteworthiness be damned. While I understand that's the point, to surround you with NPCs that seem like real people, I just don't think it worked for this game. Though I actually grew somewhat attached to Alyx (not like that, you cheeky bastards), but that was mainly because she was a competent AI partner, a feature absurdly rare in games.

Gravity Gun? I admit it was fun to use. For two minutes.

Oh yes, and then there were puzzles. Floating barrel puzzels and "teeter totter" puzzles. Oh please, Valve, don't introduce any complexity or anything. I wouldn't know what to do if I actually had to think.

The game just felt empty, and not in the "artsy, thought-provoking" way. If you disagree, that's just fine. I love that people enjoy this game. I love that people get enjoyment out of any game, whether I like the game or not. It means the game has great value. I don't like playing it, but it has value.

You guys really have to understand, this game is nearly five years old. Things that were amazing in Half-Life 2 when it came out have been copied my lots of big name FPS games (Call of Duty 4, Crysis, etc) so they aren't as amazing as they were when it was first released.

If you really must know though, I'll fill you in. Keep in mind these are impressions of when it was first released...

* Amazing graphics engine (at the time, no other game really came close to it in terms of graphics except maybe Doom 3)

* Amazing physics engine (this was before physics engines started to become popular in games)

* Gravity gun (If you honestly find the gravity gun to be boring, there is something wrong with your head. How anyone would prefer killing an enemy with lame old bullets over a toilet bowl is beyond me.)

* Strong, believable characters with excellent voice acting which hasn't really been matched by any game since

* Amazing storytelling largely due to the amazing characters and non-existent cutscenes

* Fantastic level design (Ravenholm, Nova Prospekt, etc.)

It's a more refined FPS experience over than your standard HURRR-DURRR RUN N GUN HALOZ FPS experience. If you have the mentality of "don't think about anything just shoot enemies" then yeah, you probably aren't going to like Half-Life 2.

I liked the game. It wasn't particularly amazing, but at least it was functional. I found that the driving controls sucked, however. Mapping acceleration and steering to the same analog stick was a stupid idea.

On another note, responding to people saying that the story told almost entirely on objects around the environment to be innovative, original, etc. It isn't. It's just stupid. Having to pay special attention to your surroundings just to find out what the hell is going on is not good storytelling. While these people may be correct about not handing the story on a silver platter, you should at least being given some clue about what's happening and leave the more intricate and less necessary information to be found by those with sharp eyes.

Thank you for supporting my brief rant.
Controls are a bit better on the computer, is all.

My computer can barely run the Half-Life 2 demo for Christ's sake, so all I can do is widdle down and sob in the corner of never being able to play Team Fortress 2...

Though from what I could barely play from the demo, I didn't enjoy it too much. The level was confusing for me and I had no idea what I was supposed to do.

I get that the main reason why people love the Half-Life series is that at the time it was released, it was like no other game out there. It's definately one of those "You had to be there man!" kind of games, which unfortunately I will never get to experience.

Because of navigation or difficult puzzles or what? I've actually had to refer to a walkthrough once or twice because the maps are attempting to be non-linear by giving you several different pathways, with the exit being a 2 inch wide ladder.

And that final sentence was a bit conusing.

Never played the games so I can't say. Though, I do hope to get the Orange Box since I just got a 360.
Get it on PC. You'll have over 9000% more fun.
I would, but the only computer I have is a 5 year old laptop. Hell, when I tried Team Fortress 2 durring it's free weekend the graphics looked like crap, it ran at about 5 frames per second, and it crashed about a minute after playing. Not my idea of fun.
Preposterous!

On Topic: I thought the game was really hard. I'm stuck at that helicopter, and I'm getting raped by the mob of soldiers in that warehouse.
