I played Half Life 2 Episode 1 before playing any Half Life game (mostly because it was on sale for $5-7 that weekend)... talk about not knowing what the hell is going on... still haven't played HL1 at all...

Byt the way, you bought it on something besides the PC, so that makes you a dumbass. Dumbass.

Yes, but if you didn't play Half-Life 1, like I didn't you are not going to have a CLUE what's going on.

It's not really necessary. You'll get most of it, just not all of it.
Speaking of which, I'm off to the White Forest...

I played HL2/HL2 Episodes a full year before even thinking about HL1, mostly because I've been too lazy to look for it, and that was all on my laptop (which bit the dust some months ago >.>). Even then, I watched about half the game on YouTube thanks to walkthrough videos.

The storylines are connected, but very loosely. Most of the characters that you meet in HL1 are stock, generic, and mostly for filler in my honest opinion, just so you aren't by yourself; in contrast, HL2's main characters are unique, engaging, and more than just faces. The missions are a bit more diverse, as are the locations, but mostly the story is much deeper than the first time around. Also, its best not to go around shooting Alyx Vance, or any of the other NP characters, since you need them on more than one mission >.> At least their AI is more advanced than most "partners" you get, as they usually don't run into your line of fire ~.~

By the way, right now I'm play HL1 on my stock Gateway PC that's at least 7 years old, and it plays just fine.

the original half life is amazing tbh. In some respects i prefer it to HL2. Maybe just because i played it when it was new out then HL2 when that was new out. So HL was just something amazingly different to anything i played before it, nearest game i enjoyed so much was Quake.

You don't really need to play HL1 first for the story although it does fill in some of the blanks and back story, but even without that reason i'd play HL1 first just because its an amazing game

CPU is an acronym for "Central Processing Unit", meaning the processor of a computer. Consoles also have CPUs; you wanted to use PC.

OT: I played both Half Life and Half Life 2 on release, and found Half Life to be a great and innovative game while finding its sequel rather generic and boring. I honestly don't know why so many people think it's the best game ever made or whatever.

I played Half Life 2 before I played Half Life, and I wasn't that confused or lost.

It helps if you either played Half Life before hand or if you just know what happened. I personally wouldn't really recommend playing the first, but I played the PS2 version so that could be the reason why I didn't like it.

Apparently sometime this year Half Life:Source will be coming out, so let's hope that it will happen and that us console whores can get in as well.

you really don't need to even know that half life one existed to play half life 2, the gap inbetween is massive and the story line has changed completely. all you really need to know was that black mesa made a portal type thing...
