I admit I never played Halo's first player, so I have to rely on what others say. Judging from what they say, Halo's a flashy, overrated average FPS with decent multiplayer.
Valve, however, are very well known for their deep game design philosphy. They are so dedicated to it that they even give commentary to explain their game design choices.
HalfLife also has an interesting way of doing cutscenes and storytelling that completely immerses you into it.
I think it also helps Halflife's case is that Valve focused on making it an excellent single player experience whereas Halo is split between single and multiplayer. While it's possible to have both an excellent multiplayer and single player (as Goldeneye proved to us), I think the centralized focus on single player gives Halflife series an edge. Plus, I respect Valve's decision to do that, considering they then turned to focus on giving an excellent multiplayer experience, which resulted in Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead.
