Single player is a category now? I thought story, music, gameplay, mechanics, and every that makes single player are the categories. - Iso 1, JC 0.
A.I.? Please, I was playing Half Life Episode 1 earlier today and the combine, Headcrabs and Antlions just love running at me. It was a case of "Could I back off fast enough without running out of wall" - Iso 2, JC 0
Combat? Large excellently working vehicle sections, niche filling enemies (Snipers/Jackals - Cannon Fodder/Grunts - Soldiers/Brutes/Elites - Tankers/Hunters - Aerial - Drones/Brute jumppacks/Elite Jetpacks and that's just the Covenant, not including the Combat forms, Tank Forms, Stalker Forms, Needler forms, Infection forms and Carrier forms of the Flood. Each doing their own thing). Well balanced but also very tactical weapons. OR Large selection of weapons, no skill or tactical thinking required (Just find the one that works best for a given situation and stick with it until time says change), awkward first person vehicle sections, and enemies that love to rush all the time (Manhacks, Combine, Antlions, Headcrabs.) - Iso 3, JC 0
Story - This is a tie, A large collective alien force try to kill humans, and are now fighting over a universal weapon of mass destruction. With a zombie like parasite and millenia old robot army get thrown into the fray. Humanity's losing, The Aliens are winning, The Zombies are taking over, and the Robots want to kill everyone. Or Vague mysterious gameplay with only one likable character that takes alot of background research to fully comprehend, and even then some. Although saying that. I'd take Cortana and Johnson over Eli and Alyx anyday.
Immersion and Atmosphere? Well, with the never-ending feeling that were losing the war and things are bleak all the way throughout (Cortana: "Cortana to Echo 419! Two Covenant Banshees are approaching on your six! Evade, say again, evade!" Foehammer/Echo 419:"I'm hit! Mayday! Mayday! Airfoil structures have been shot to hell! I can't hold her! I can't hold her!" Cortana: *After watching her fall. In a solemn tone* "She's gone..." until the final 4 missions of Halo 3. Combined with the awesome music that always sets the mood. Or Half-Lifes vague and mysterious kill fest with barely any dialogue except for Alyx's annoying little "Whew, that was close" or that infamous "Zombine" line. I'd take Halo's immersion anyday. - Iso 4, JC 0
Mechanics - Half Life...It's a puzzle game with a FPS bit added on. What's not to get? Iso 4, JC 1
Weapons - Halo - Each weapon fills a specific niche, and so your loadout must be picked carefully. There is also a much larger variety of weapons than Half Lifes smaller selection. Iso 5, JC 1.
Genericness - Halo spawned all the Generic shooters. Not the Generic Shooters spawned Halo. Why do you think titles get the name "Possible Halo Killer" when being released. Heres looking at you Killzone 2. Iso 6, JC 1 (Just for the zing.)
Gameplay - Half Life, Run and Gun. Recharge at Health Stations, Solve puzzle. Halo, Run and Gun, Trial and Error until completion. Find skulls for achievements or a challenge. 4 player Co-Op (2 player in previous installments) - So Halo wins because Halo has that "Replayabilty" factor. Iso 7, JC 1
Overall - With Bungies lucky number 7 to JC's pathetic 1. Looks like Halo > Half Life
