Sadly, I would choose the 100 people. Sucks to be them, but I am NOT damning the closest person to me. She means a lot to me, there's no fucking way I would choose her or be able to live with myself if I did such a thing. It may be the same for 100 people, and though it may probably be the more moral choice to make, again, they are people I don't know and don't mean much to me.

"She" is referring to my best friend I've had for a long time. No way in hell (No pun intended) would I betray her like that. I'd damn myself to an eternity in hell before she and/or the innocent 100 people were unfairly sent to hell. You see, because I care about those I love and am close to.

Kill god and gain free entry to heaven for everyone.... or just B. seriously though if god does that (though he is just as bad in the bible) i would seriously give a damn good try of killing him/her/it.

The religion stuff is irrelevant, guys, it's just a framework for a moral dilemma. Basically your answer to this question depends on whether or not you are capable of feeling empathy towards people you do not know. Everyone who can do this is wracked with self-loathing at the thought of condemning a hundred innocent-until-proven-guilty souls to eternal damnation. Everyone who cannot is confused as to how this question is supposed to be difficult.

One is reminded of the story of Abraham and Isaac. That one ended reasonably well. An exploration of the limits of human love and fear of God. Abraham's faith in God in exemplary. I'm almost certain I could not be that strong.

Sorry random people, but I don't really know you. And it's not my fault you were picked to be amongst the 100, blame God for that.

Last I saw (from a random google search) about 70,000 people die per day. And presumably, if this is oldschool Catholic God here, most of them forgot to say their prayers and get sent to hell forever anyway.
You just reminded me of a song (Don't Fear The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult).

OT: i choose the 100. I'd never damn the one closest to me. Plus i go to heaven either way! I don't even believe in God and i go to paradise for sending 100 people to hell.

What if I wanted to go to hell? My version of hell is that its where all the hookers, drugs and rock bands are, you know, coz they are "bad stuff", and we spend the rest of time mixing LSD into Vodka and rocking out with people such as Cliff Burton :)

Id like to think id save the hundred people. It just wouldnt be right to damn a hundred people over 1. But thats not the kind of thing you can really know about yourself until your in that type of situation.

Then again, it might just be a test, like...aw i cant remember his name(what a good christian i am) The man who was told to sacrifice his son, then at the last minute god told him to sacrifice a goat instead. Maybe it would just be a test like that.

Sorry strangers but I can't damn the ones I love. Gotta say that God is pretty sadistic for making me choose.

I picked the 100 random people cause I wouldn't want to get rid of the person closest to me.

Also this reminds me of the Trolley Problem [http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem].

I'd damm 100, mostly because the closest person to me is someone I feel is one of the few good people this world has. I'm pretty cynical, so I reckon if I killed 100 people randomly the odds of me killing an innocent would still be very slim.

Ah yes, whatever you do, you're still an asshole.
But I'd rather be an asshole with my loved one than with 100 random people to be honest.

Given that heaven's supposed to be eternal bliss, I expect I would feel no guilt or regret and no-one would ever blame for my choice. Which makes that choice irrelevant, really, as long as someone goes to heaven.

So I'd rather save the one close person and damn the hundred strangers. If God can be sadistic, I can be selfish.

one thing i can always laugh about is the entire 'god made hus in his image' thing. if below then also above in this case: this means god is as evil, violent, greedy, selfish and power hungry as the rest of us. so theres your question, he would probably even EXPECT you to pull the 100 people go to hell lever. also girlfriend or 100 random people? 100 people burn RIGHT NOW. she'l be pissed at me for half an hour but then her common sense will kick in, she'l thank me later. XD

The person closest to me would want me to sacrifice them. Once the torture has begun, they'd probably hate me hate me hate me forever, but the fact is that they volunteered. My most precious person wouldn't be selfish.

That's, like, the easiest would you rather ever. Let's analyse your scenario, OP: The love of my life is in one cage, 100 random people are in another cage, and all my friends and family are stood next to me. So in other words, there is no way that the 100 random people could accidentally include anyone I care about, as they are all already stood next to me, seperate from the 100 unfortunates. And this is meant to be a hard decision? Hmm, I think not.

After all it IS random, the nature of random is that It could be anyone.

Though taking my questions out of the math id go with the 100 the people i keep close are generally good people who are intelligent if the 100 are truly random most might be stupid or dicks... I'll dame the 100 not a hard choice though i'm not sure who who would be the single person in the cage.
As I've just pointed out, in the scenario outlined by the OP the 100 random people are preselected and are definitely not any of your family or friends. Easy choice.
